The course is intended to form part of the formal training for clinical engineers as well and provide opportunities for professionals currently working in the NHS in engineering. The modules will be taught largely by professional clinical scientists drawn from some of the major London teaching hospitals and cover the core topics in Clinical Engineering as well as focusing on emerging technologies. As healthcare becomes increasingly dependent on technology, this course meets the growing need for Clinical Engineers in the UK as well as in the international healthcare industry. The MSc programme totals 180 credits, which consist of 8 taught modules totalling 135 credits and a 45 credit dissertation/project. The programme is offered as either full or part-time. The full-time programme follows a normal 12-month pattern with two terms of taught modules followed by a relevant project e.g. based on a current research area in Clinical/Biomedical Engineering. If you are a part-time student you may request that their project be completed in an extra year of study. If you are a part time student you can take approximately half the modules from each period in the first year and the remaining half in the second year. Aims The overall aim of the programme is to provide a well-rounded educational background to support training for a professional career as a Clinical Engineer in the NHS or other healthcare organisation, or for prospective careers in the healthcare industry where expertise in Engineering applied to Medicine is required. The programme will also prepare graduates who plan to work in Biomedical Engineering research. 1

2 The specific aims are to produce graduates who: - have the ability, attributes and confidence to become qualified Clinical Engineers are eligible to complete their Part I Clinical Scientist training (after completion of the DipIPEM) - have a sound knowledge and understanding to solve complex problems in Clinical Engineering in the healthcare environment - have knowledge and understanding of Healthcare Technology Management - have sufficient background in Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology to be able to effectively apply Engineering disciplines to problems in Medicine - are able to communicate effectively to clinicians and other healthcare professionals WHAT WILL I BE EXPECTED TO ACHIEVE? On successful completion of this programme, you will be expected to be able to: Knowledge and understanding: Have knowledge of how engineering is applied to the provision of clinical medicine and the increasing reliance of modern medicine on medical technology. Understand how biomedical engineering is fundamental to many areas of medical research and development. Have knowledge and understanding of key diagnostic and therapeutic systems and methods. Understand that healthcare technology management is now applied to all stages of the product life cycle. Understand how a clinical engineering department functions as part of a modern hospital. Skills: Identify problems, then critically analyse and test concepts and hypotheses for innovative solutions. Demonstrate design and project management skills in development of instrumentation and other medical devices. Demonstrate an ability to apply concepts of Clinical Engineering practice to assist with healthcare delivery. Critically read and interpret/appraise medical and engineering academic literature. Use a range of software packages for data acquisition, signal processing and representation/communication of information. Values and attitudes: Understand the importance of biomedical technology in the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Recognise and take responsibility for their role in the provision of safe and reliable medical equipment. Understand the specific design considerations which apply to medical technology, Understand the regulatory (including health and safety) requirements governing the use of medical devices. 2

3 This programme has been developed in accordance with the QAA Subject Benchmark for generic masters level programmes. HOW WILL I LEARN? Being a Masters level programme, you are expected to be self-motivated and also self-reliant. The teaching and learning strategy is based on lectures, tutorials, laboratory coursework and demonstrations. You will also carry out a research project attached to one of the areas of research pursued in the department under the guidance of a supervisor and should integrate material taught in other modules. If you are a part-time student you generally carry out you project in the workplace. If you are a full time student you should expect approximately 16 hours of contact time with academic staff per week. As a part-time student you should expect approximately 8 hours per week of contact time with academic staff. In most cases, as a part- time student you will only be required to attend one day per week. For details of other types of learning, self-directed study etc. please see module specifications. WHAT TYPES OF ASSESSMENT AND FEEDBACK CAN I EXPECT? Assessment and Assessment Criteria Assessment is in the form of written examinations, coursework and a written project report. Each individual module coursework is combined with the written examination to provide an overall module mark. As part of the project assessment you will submits a report of up to 10,000 words in length and completes an oral examination. Assessment Criteria are descriptions, based on the intended learning outcomes, of the skills, knowledge or attitudes that you need to demonstrate in order to complete an assessment successfully, providing a mechanism by which the quality of an assessment can be measured. Grade- Related Criteria are descriptions of the level of skills, knowledge or attributes that you need to demonstrate in order achieve a certain grade or mark in an assessment, providing a mechanism by which the quality of an assessment can be measured and placed within the overall set of marks. Assessment Criteria and Grade-Related Criteria will be made available to you to support you in completing assessments. These may be provided in programme handbooks, module specifications, on the virtual learning environment or attached to a specific assessment task. Feedback on assessment Feedback will be provided in line with our Assessment and Feedback Policy. In particular, you will normally be provided with feedback within three weeks of the submission deadline or assessment date. This would normally include a provisional grade or mark. For end of module examinations or an equivalent significant task (e.g. an end of module project), feedback will normally be provided within four weeks. The timescale for feedback on final year projects or dissertations may be longer. 3

The Pass mark for each module is 50%. If you fail an assessment component or a module, the following will apply: 1. Compensation: where you fail up to a total of 20 credits at first or resit attempt (15 for a Postgraduate Certificate), you may be allowed compensation if: Compensation is permitted for the module involved (see the module specification), and It can be demonstrated that you have satisfied all the Learning Outcomes of the modules in the Programme, and A minimum overall mark of no more than 10 percentage points below the module pass mark has been achieved in the module to be compensated, and An aggregate mark of 50% has been achieved overall. If you receive a compensated pass in a module you shall be awarded the credit for that module. The original component marks shall be retained in the record of marks and the greater of the original module mark and the minimum pass mark for the module shall be used for the purpose of calculation towards the Award. 2. Resit: you will normally be offered one resit attempt. However, if you did not participate in the first assessment and have no extenuating circumstances, you may not be offered a resit. If you are successful in the resit, you shall be awarded the credit for that module. The mark used for the purpose of calculation towards your Award shall be calculated from the original marks for the component(s) that you passed at first attempt and the minimum pass mark for the component(s) for which you took a resit. If you do not satisfy your resit by the date specified you will not progress and the Assessment Board shall require that you withdraw from the Programme. If you fail to meet the requirements for the Programme, but satisfy the requirements for a lower-level Award, then a lower qualification may be awarded as per the table below. If you fail to meet the requirements for the Programme and are not eligible for the award of a lower level qualification, the Assessment Board shall require that you withdraw from the Programme. 4

TO WHAT KIND OF CAREER MIGHT I GO ON? Careers might involve designing patient monitoring, wearable sensors and therapeutic systems. Clinical engineering is one of the fastest growing engineering disciplines offering graduates a wide range of career opportunities in healthcare organisations and industries worldwide. With a background in technology management, graduates will have necessary skills for management positions, for example running an engineering department within a hospital. The course is intended to form part of the formal training for clinical engineers as well and provide opportunities for professionals currently working in engineering in the NHS. You may wish to apply for vacancies in the NHS, private sector or international healthcare organisation. You are encouraged to become members of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) where they will be put in touch with the Clinical Engineering community and any opportunities that arise around the UK during their studies. Application to the Clinical Scientist training programme is encouraged and fully supported. The Career and Skills Development Service provides a professional, high quality careers and information service for you and recent graduates of City, in collaboration with employers and other University academic and service departments. The course also prepares graduates who plan to work in biomedical engineering research. Accrediting Body: Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) Nature of Accreditation Accreditation from the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) is being sought for this new programme. It is anticipated that accreditation will be backdated to the first entry cohort. HOW DO I ENTER THE PROGRAMME? The normal requirement is a first or second class (2:2 minimum) honours degree in a physical science. Other qualifications may also be considered if you possess relevant experience in a field related to Biomedical Engineering, but you may need to demonstrate proficiency in mathematics.
