1 Digital Technology Year 10 Course Outline 2016

2 Curriculum Statement Computer systems and software are an integral part of the world in which we live. Few areas of our working and personal lives remain untouched by technology. The aim is for students to develop a broad technological literacy that will equip them to participate in society as informed citizens and give them access to technology-related careers. They learn practical skills as they develop models, products, and systems. They also learn about technology as a field of human activity, experiencing and/or exploring historical and contemporary examples of technology from a variety of contexts. 3 Topic 1: Intro and blogging During this brief introductory topic students review their logins, keyboarding and skills, and create a blog using blogspot. Four periods available to: Review logins to network, , google and Ultranet. Create a blog Chronological: In time or date order Audience: The people who will be viewing or using your product Topic 2: Use Publisher During the course of this topic students learn how to create simple documents using Microsoft Office Publisher. The context will be health and safety on computers, and students will research material online to use in their publications. Six periods available to: Revise common tools within the Publisher program Use Publisher to create a brochure, an advertisement and a poster. Text box: A box on the publisher document screen which text can be inserted into, and which can be resized or moved around the document. Template: A facility within the Publisher software allowing students to use ready-made document designs, replacing the text and images with the student s own. Topic 3: Binary In this mini-topic students will learn what bits and bytes are, what binary code is and how it can be used to count. Two periods available to: Learn what binary code is Work as a group to learn to count in binary code

4 Topic 4: Scratch Programming Open Source software Scratch offers an introduction to the concepts of logical thinking and computer programming. Students use blocks of pre-made code to create sequences of instructions including conditionals, variables and loops. 10 periods available to: Learn how to create a scratch project and sprites Learn how to make the sprite move in different ways Learn to make sprites interact Script: A sequence of instructions Sprite: The animated character that you are controlling using scripts Stage: The background upon which your animation occurs Loop: A repeated section of code Variable: A value stored as part of the code that can be changed by the code when certain conditions are met e.g. the score in a game Conditional: A set of instructions that will be carried out only if certain conditions are met - e.g. if touching another sprite, then Topic 5: Coding web sites in HTML Students will learn the basics of HTML code, enabling them to create simple web sites. 10 periods available to: Learn the bare bones of an HTML document Learn how to use notepad++ and Chrome web browser to create and view web sites Be able to add images, links, colours and text effects to their web pages HTML: Hypertext Mark-up Language Text editor: Simple software used for writing and editing text Run: Executing a piece of computer code to make it do what it s supposed to. We run our html file to see what happens when we open it in a browser Code: A set of computer program instructions Tags: A large part of HTML code, denoted by <pointy brackets> Link: A piece of text or image which opens a new web page when clicked on Readability: The design of documents in ways that make reading and understanding of the text easier for end users Target audience: The people who you are aiming to attract or convey

5 information to with your design item Purpose: What you are trying to achieve as a product of your design Evaluate: Judging the attributes of your completed design item against its purpose to see how well it meets the aims of the task.

6 Topic 6: Manage a Computer Students will have the opportunity to learn about their computer and how to take care of it. 12 periods available to: Gain knowledge of the hardware components of a personal computer system Gain knowledge of the operation of a computer Demonstrate knowledge of the operation of the system and application software of a personal computer Operate a printer and replace consumables Complete basic operation and maintenance procedures for a personal computer Demonstrate knowledge of ergonomic principles for the safe operation of a personal computer system Application: A computer programme Troubleshoot: Find the source of problems and solve them if possible Ergonomics: Ways of working that will minimise health and safety problems Topic 7: Movie Making During the course of this topic students learn how to make a short video composed of photos, video footage and sound footage that the students have captured and edited themselves. Six periods available to: Learn how to use Windows live movie maker to create a sequence of video clips, adding transitions, sounds and effects. Film footage and transfer it from a camera to the computer. Create a video project Transitions: Automated video elements which alter the way video clips change from one to the next. Effects: Adjustments to the look of a video clip Export: Save a video project in a video file format

7 Topic 8: Document Design Students will learn principles of document design which make print publications effective. 10 periods available to: Learn the basic elements of document design Learn about the purpose and target audience of documents Learn about the design process Contrast: Adding interest to documents by varying the boldness or colour of different items on the page Repetition: Repeating elements of a design to enhance harmony in documents Alignment: Arrangement of text and images on a page Proximity: The grouping of similar items on a page to en able reader to better follow and understand the text Topic 10: Animation During the course of this topic students learn how to use Adobe Flash Designer to create short animations Eight periods available to: Learn how to use Adobe Flash Designer to create short animations Create an animated web banner Timeline: A view showing the time increments of an animation Frame: The smallest unit of time on an animation timeline Tween: A facility that simplifies animation by creating the frame-by-frame increments for the user automatically
