1 Garfield Public Schools Fine & Practical Arts Curriculum Web Design (Half-Year) 2.5 Credits Course Description This course provides students with basic knowledge of HTML and CSS to create websites and also basic skills for designing and creating websites using Google Sites. Students will use these skills and knowledge to create personal fully functional websites that display their interests. Students will have the opportunity to discover a special interest in web design as a possible future career. Prerequisite Students who plan to enroll in Web Design must have successfully completed Computer Applications II.

2 Content Unit Title: Garfield Public Schools Web Design Unit Map Google Sites... 5 Blocks Overview: The primary objective of this activity is for students to create a website using Google Sites and other Google Apps. Create a Gmail Account and Learn to use it Create a Google Calendar Account and learn to use it Create a Google drive account to save all of your files for this class Create a Picasa account and learn to use it Create a Google Site o Insert and edit site headers o Insert pictures and use Picasa to edit them o Add different types of pages o Edit site layout o Change themes and colors o Insert Google gadgets o Publish your site Unit Title: Creating a website using HTML.. 1 Block Overview: The primary objective of this unit is for students to have the proper basic tools and understanding of what HTML is and what is needed to create one. 3 Overview: The primary objective of this unit is for students to learn the code and proper procedures for creating a HTML website Basic Tags Code organization Correct coding Emphasizing text Headers Indenting and spacing Symbols and characters Lists Bookmarks and Hyperlinks Images Color Box model Border properties Outlines Margins padding Unit Title: Cascading Style Sheets Blocks Overview: The primary objective of this unit is to learn about and how to use basic CSS in an HTML website. During this time students will begin working on their final project, a fully functional website using HTML along with CSS on a topic of their choice. How can the use of a Google Calendar improve your life? Does anyone use a calendar? What for? Unit Results Students will be able to use the above Google apps in a professional manner. Proper etiquette, file storage, photo editing and organization, daily planning, and basic web design will all help students in college, their chosen career and their personal life. Suggested Activities The following activities can be incorporated into the daily lessons:

Create a Google Site Using Picasa create a site banner for the Google Site

Students will also research sites to purchase a domain Students will create their first HTML file in a directory

Know how to group selectors Change the dimensions of elements Hide elements Overlap elements Use hover for different types of elements Float elements Align elements Be able to identify and use pseudo classes and elements Style navigation bars to make them more attractive Create an image gallery Create a transparent element Use image sprites Suggested Activities The following activities can be incorporated into the daily lessons: Insert two elements into a webpage and have them overlap, also change the dimensions of each. Use float properties to align three images on a single line vertically and them horizontal Create or edit a navigation bar. Use CSS to style it using table, transparency, hover and color Create an image gallery with at least 5 images and captions for each. Use transparency of an element to show text over a picture. Use an image sprite as a navigation bar.
