1 Context: Objective: 4 th Grade Math Lesson Plan Coordinate Planes This lesson designed for a 4 th grade class at Kraft Elementary School. This class contains 16 students. No students have IEPs and none are ELL, as these students have been placed in another class. This is the initial lesson on coordinate planes. The student will draw and identify ordered pairs on a coordinate plane. SOL (2001): 4.18 The student will identify the ordered pair for a point and locate the point for an ordered pair in the first quadrant of a coordinate plane. Materials/ Resources: Large coordinate plane on graph paper Index cards with one ordered pair on each for each student in class Content and Instructional Strategies: 1. Introduce coordinate planes to students by drawing the Cartesian plane on graph paper on the board. Introduce the x and y- axes as two lines that represent the relationship of two variables: x and y. Make the connection to two number lines that intersect at a corner called the origin. 2. Introduce the ordered pair. Explain how to locate a point on the coordinate plane given an ordered pair. For example, with the coordinate pair (3, 4), share that the first number, 3, applies to how far away the point is from the point of origin on the horizontal x- axis. Count three notches to the right on the x- axis to arrive at 3. Do the same for the second number, 4, explaining that the second number applies to how far away the point Is from the point of original on the vertical y- axis. Emphasize that students need to plot the y- coordinate by counting up from the point they have first found on the x- axis. Give a few examples to be sure students have grasped concept. 3. Practice: Using the example coordinate plane on board, hand out an ordered pair to each student and have them take turns marking their point and having the class check their point. Make sure the students write their ordered pair next to the point! Explain to the students that if they correctly identify all ordered pairs, the points will form a figure (can be a smiley face, a letter, or another teacher- determined figure; points for smiley face attached). 4. Students will complete the individual exercise Plot Garden where they will plant seeds in their garden based on given points. The teacher will pass out worksheet (attached) of types of seeds and their corresponding ordered pair (the planting spot). After students complete their planting they will turn to their partner and check to see if their gardens are identical 5. Gather students in for a group discussion on if they found the use of a coordinate plane and ordered pairs practical for planting a garden. Summarize with possible questions: What other uses might coordinate planes have?

2 How do you remember how to plot points given an ordered pair? What possible mnemonics can you think of to remember which axis is which and which point of an ordered pair is which? Evaluation: Collect Plot Garden activity and grade for accuracy based on points given. Differentiation and Adaptations: In the Plot Garden activity, pair less advanced or special education students with more advanced students. The less advanced student will receive more support and the more advanced student might benefit from additional explanation. As an extension activity for student interested, have them make their own design or figure using coordinate points. Coordinate plane art examples can be found here: Reflection: Help student to come up with own rules to remember the axes and how to plot an ordered pair, as this is where they often get mixed- up. Make plotting ordered pairs more interesting by having points form a shape.
