Most Italians live in the North or along the coasts Where do the least number of people live? The northeastern part of the country is the least dense Where do the least number of people live? The least amount of people live in central Italy and on the island Sardinia On the following map of Europe show the following: a) Shade the areas to show where most people live in Germany and Italy. b) Draw a small star to indicate the location of each major city in both countries.

4 Discussion Questions 1. What helps to give the UK its moderate climate? Explain. 2. Why do you think Russia has so many different types of climate? 3. Where is the highland climate in Germany found? 4. What helps to give Italy its warm, sunny Mediterranean climate? 5. Explain how each country s location and physical features help or hinder trade? United Kingdom, Russia, Germany, Italy 6. How does the availability of natural resources affect trade? 7. Russia has an abundance of natural resources such as oil, but Russians are unable to use many of these resources. Explain why you think this is so. 8. Look at a world population map. Compare the population in Europe to that of the United States. Describe what you see. 9. What do all the capitals of each country have in common? 10. Why do you think many manufacturing and trade centers are located close to rivers? 11. Why do you think the U.K. has a higher population density than Russia?

5 Discussion Questions 1. What helps to give the UK its moderate climate? Explain. The North Atlantic Current brings warm air 2. Why do you think Russia has so many different types of climate? Russia has so many climate types because it covers a large area of latitudes 3. Where is the highland climate in Germany found? The Alps 4. What helps to give Italy its warm, sunny Mediterranean climate? The Alps block cooler winds 5. Explain how each country s location and physical features help or hinder trade? United Kingdom,- Since the U.K. is an island, it helps trade by having access to the ocean Russia, - Russia s vast area and limited water access makes it difficult to transport goods Germany- Germany s proximity to other countries in Europe helps trade along with ocean access and the Rhine river. Italy- The Alps make hinders trade to the north, but the Mediterranean Sea helps trade 6. How does the availability of natural resources affect trade? The more natural resources a country has available, the more a country can trade hence increasing the country s economy 7. Russia has an abundance of natural resources such as oil, but Russians are unable to use many of these resources. Explain why you think this is so. Russia s formidable climate prevents the extraction of many of Russia s natural resources 8. Look at a world population map. Compare the population in Europe to that of the United States. Describe what you see. The United States is not nearly as densely populated as Europe. The most densely populated areas in the U.S. are New York and Los Angeles

6 9. What do all the capitals of each country have in common? All of the capitals are major manufacturing and trade centers, have a high population density, and are located on rivers 10. Why do you think many manufacturing and trade centers are located close to rivers? In order to transport goods more easily 11. Why do you think the U.K. has a higher population density than Russia? Moderate climate Environmental Issues What creates acid rain and air pollution throughout Europe? What creates land and water pollution? Which cities in the following countries have poor air quality: United Kingdom, Russia, Germany, and Italy. Why do you think these cities are more affected by air pollution than other cities in the same country? Which countries in Europe are not experiencing as high of a risk of acid rain as other countries in Europe? Why do you think this is so?
