2 At African Impact we believe that when youth undertake an internship placement, it not only boosts their professional stature and resume, and teaches them valuable skills; but the nature of our internships allows them to make a real impact on the lives of others. Our internship division is really important to us. Having been in Africa for 10 years facilitating successful volunteer projects and internship programs, we feel strongly that ethical internships can play a big role in helping us achieve our mission of providing amazing experiences which contribute to worthy causes in a viable way. With the nurturing of close partnerships across the continent, we have access to over 120 internship placements all individually managed to match the applicant. Internships are a key part of the work experience of today s youth and they so often act as a viewing glass into how an industry works and what to expect. Some of the most amazing success stories we ve witnessed involve interns finishing their programs having gained not only hands-on experience, but the confidence that they can succeed professionally in any industry while also doing good in either a social or environmental way. Since African Impact was founded in 2004, we ve proudly facilitated over 500 internship placements across Africa and each year partner with responsible NGO s and interesting grassroots organisations to develop even more amazing work experiences for our leaders of tomorrow. We have a passion for having young people advance in their skills and careers while making an impact in the area they work in. 3 Providing great learning experiences that have a positive impact Empowering interns to achieve more professionally Promoting environmental and social enterprises in Africa Helping communities with support and aid You will be based on the fence line of the Kruger National Park and the Mutale River in South Africa, nestled between the borders of Zimbabwe and Mozambique. A truly spectacular area, the village of Bennde-Mutale inpafuri is home to waterfalls, game parks, colourful landscapes and the world s biggest Baobab tree. The village is quite large, with 150 homesteads where, as an intern, you will be housed with a local family providing an honest and unique cultural African experience! Accommodation as an intern in Bennde Mutale is home-stay with a local family, providing a unique opportunity to gain a firsthand insight to how people live within the rural community. You will likely live in a thatched, circular, traditional home, which is a lot cooler on the inside than out. You will have a private room, and basic, yet functional ablution facilities. Hot water is available. During the week you will eat with the family. The staple food is pap (stiff porridge) with a variety of vegetables and often chicken. You will be provided with a balanced diet and if you have any specific dietary requirements this can be catered for. 4 Friday evenings are known for traditional barbeques, where you can also enjoy a couple of drinks at a local shebeen [informal pub] and star gaze in the African sky. Weekends are usually a good time for tourist activities where you can enjoy the beach during the summer time as well as some really unique adventures such as cage shark diving, paragliding, kitesurfing and taking a wine tasting tour through Cape Town s beautiful winelands. Gain practical work experience with an NGO Make a positive impact in the lives of underprivileged youth Enhance your CV with an international internship Meet and work with people from different countries and cultures Be immersed in a different culture, experiencing first-hand a completely different way of life Make friends for life with other international interns and volunteers on the program You roles and duties as an intern will include but not be limited to: Assisting with day-to-day management of the NGO Liaison with local civic organizations Accounting and budget management Assisting Bennde Mutale Home Based Care with operational guidance Sourcing and assessing future community development projects within the region Funding and grant research Educational Program assistance may include: After-school clubs, crèches and local primary school education. Activities range from teaching English, math and geography, to playing sports and doing jigsaw puzzles. Acting as a teaching assistant with learners from Grade 4 Grade 7 Designing your own educational materials with limited resources

5 No experience is necessary however an interest in education and/or the NGO sector is required (driver s license is useful but not required). 6 Travel to Johannesburg International Airport Personal travel insurance for the duration of your placement which must include cover for repatriation and evacuation All items of a personal nature such as curios, gifts, snacks, drinks, clothing, etc. Any excursions over and above your planned itinerary Based on the length of your stay, a number of weekend excursions are an included feature of your internship. Opportunities include: Kruger National Park (northern region) for a Safari and magnificent Africa wildlife experience Limpopo River and Fever Tree Forest Lake Fundudzi, the sacred lake of the Venda and only natural lake in South Africa Makuya Park Walking Safari Nwanedi Nature Reserve The Big Tree [largest Baobab in Africa] Local ruins and caves

7 Please note when booking flights that you will be collected at Johannesburg airport. You are required to arrive the Sunday before your internship start date. You will be accommodated at a backpackers overnight in Johannesburg, to be transferred by coach to the village the following morning. African Impact will arrange all transfers and overnight accommodation required. Your project manager will hold a sign with your name in greeting you at the airport. Note: Visa arrangements are your responsibility and the information provided below serves as a guideline only. We advise that you confirm this information with the embassy/consulate of the country that you will be visiting in your home country before departure. It is possible to obtain a visa prior to departing for South Africa from your local South African Embassy, however it is usually easier to obtain the necessary visa at the airport upon arrival in South Africa itself. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date in South Africa, so please check the expiry date indicated and that you have at least two blank visa pages prior to your departure. On arrival in South Africa, you should get a tourist visa, which is usually valid for three months. 8 Prior to your trip you will need to arrange medical insurance which will give you full cover for any medical requirements which may arise during your trip, including cover for full air evacuation in the unlikely event that this is necessary. Your medical cover also needs to include repatriation. If you do not already have a company that you are happy to use to take out a policy with, we suggest World Nomads or Mind The Gap Year, who offer comprehensive medical and travel insurance. Please be sure to check your policy carefully to ensure that it does cover activities which you are likely to participate in.
