1 Loughborough University University Library Inter-Library Loan service Requesting PDFs British Library On Demand CONTENTS Requesting a PDF... 1 Registering yourself with BL On Demand... 2 Downloading your PDF... 7 Help and advice... 9 It is possible for you use the Inter-Library Loan service to request a copy of a journal article, book chapter, conference paper or similar in PDF format. The British Library On Demand service is our supplier of secure PDFs. If BL On Demand can supply what you want as a PDF, then we will get it for you. When your PDF is available, we will you let you know. In order to get access to the first PDF that you request, you must register yourself with BL On Demand and set up an online account, with its own username and password. You will only need to do this once: you will be able to get access to any subsequent PDF using your existing BL On Demand account. If you have forgotten your username or password for BL On Demand, help is available online. BL On Demand My Account These instructions cover the whole process of registration with BL On Demand and downloading PDFs supplied by it. If you are already registered you only need to follow the download instructions (13 17) below. REQUESTING A PDF 1) Request your document in the normal way using the online request form. Tick the box on the form marked Please supply this item as a PDF. Inter-Library Loan online request form 2) When your PDF is available we will forward an to you containing a hyperlink to the PDF. Click on this hyperlink.

2 REGISTERING YOURSELF WITH BL ON DEMAND 3) You will be directed to a webpage where you can download your PDF. 2 But if this is the first PDF that you have requested, you must register yourself with BL On Demand first. Click Register for On Demand. 4) You will be directed the BL On Demand account registration webpage. Click the Register button (bottom right).

3 5) You will be directed to a webpage where you can enter your details and create a username and password. 3 Please use your Loughborough University address for your BL On Demand account. When you have completed the form, click the Register button (bottom right). 6) You will be directed to a webpage confirming the creation of your BL On Demand account. Click the OK button. A confirmation will now be sent to your Loughborough University address.

4 7) The confirmation will now be in your Loughborough University inbox. 4 Click on the hyperlink in this to activate your BL On Demand account. 8) You will be directed to a webpage where you can log in to your BL On Demand account. Log in with the username and password that you chose at stage (5). Click the Login button.

5 9) You will be directed to a webpage where you can customize your BL On Demand account. 5 You should check that your details are correct and specify what sort of user you are. Click the Register button (bottom right). 10) You will be directed to a webpage where you can read and accept the terms and conditions of BL On Demand. When you have done so, tick the tick box and click the Finish button. You have now finished registering yourself with BL On Demand.

6 11) You will be directed to the BL On Demand homepage. 6 There is no immediate need for you to be on this page, so close the tab, and return to your Loughborough University inbox. 12) A second confirmation will now be in your Loughborough University inbox. There is no need to take any action concerning this.

7 DOWNLOADING YOUR PDF 13) You must use Adobe Reader X or newer to download your PDF. This means that, if you are using Google Chrome as your web browser, you must disable Chrome PDF Viewer. Open a new tab and type chrome://plugins/ into the address bar. 7 Under Chrome PDF Viewer, click Disable and close the tab. 14) Return to the webpage at stage (3). Click the button marked Click to download your document.

8 15) The PDF will be downloaded. 8 Open the PDF. 16) You will be prompted for a username and password. Enter the username and password that you chose at stage (5). Click OK.

9 17) You will be asked whether you wish to view the PDF offline. 9 Read this text carefully and click whichever button applies to you. Your PDF will now open. You will be able to print out one copy of this PDF for your own personal use. More information about PDFs from BL On Demand is available online.
