1 VALUE LINE INVESTMENT SURVEY ONLINE User s Guide Welcome to Value Line Investment Survey Online. This user guide will show you everything you need to know to access and utilize the wealth of information available from Value Line. INTRODUCTION The Value Line Investment Survey Online contains information on approximately 1,700 stocks, more than 90 industries, the stock market, and the economy. Similar to the printed version, the electronic version has three main sections: Summary & Index contains an index of all stocks in the database as well as many up-to-date statistics. Ratings & Reports have one-page reports for each company in the database. Each company report includes Value Line s Timeliness, Safety, and Technical ranks, financial and stock price forecasts for the coming 3 to 5 years, and an analyst s written commentary. Selection & Opinion is a weekly newsletter that contains Value Line s latest economic and stock market forecasts, write-ups of interesting and attractive stocks, model portfolios, and financial and stock market statistics. 1

3 VALUE LINE HEADER The Value Line Header (See Figure 1-1) is present on every page throughout the Value Line website. It has a menu bar with seven selections: Home, Education, Products & Services, Research Center, About Value Line, Support and Site Map. The header also contains links to Log On and Contact Us. The menu column on the main page includes a link to Log On, Change Password, Subscriber Portfolios Online, Model Portfolios Online, Economic Calendar, Comparing the Value Line Averages and The Value Line Record. The display area of the Value Line homepage contains news and reports that are updated daily. The Home tab of the Value Line Header will return the screen to the main webpage of the Value Line site. The Value Line icon on the upper left of the screen also acts as a link to the homepage. FIGURE 1-1 3

4 The Education tab opens the free educational section of the website and a new menu column with the following selections: Introduction, Value Line University, How To Invest Guides, How to Use the Value Line Page, Exploring the Value Line Page, Suggestions for Building an Investment Portfolio, Educational Programming Video and History of performance of the Timeliness ranks. The Value Line University menu item (See Figure 1-2) offers instructional information on how to perform various investment functions and a new menu column divided into four parts: Part 1 Investment Basics, Part 2 Investment Strategies, Part 3 Building a Portfolio and Part 4 Studying a Stock. Each part of the university may be accessed by the button on top of the display area, the menu items in the menu column, or the links within the text of the display area. A new menu column is available for each part of the Value Line University. FIGURE 1-2 4

5 How to Invest Guides (See Figure 1-3) provides a list of informative guides that open a new page in Adobe Acrobat Reader format. At the bottom of the page are three helpful links to understanding how the Value Line Survey is set up and how to read each survey. How to Use the Value Line Page (See Figure 1-4) offers tips on the major features found on every survey page that Value Line offers. This page also has a link to the next menu item in the menu column. FIGURE 1-3 FIGURE 1-4 Exploring the Value Line Page (See Figure 1-5) contains a sample Value Line Survey page. There are 8 numbered links on the sample page corresponding to the 8 major features mentioned in the previous menu item. Suggestions for Building an Investment Portfolio provides useful insight on how to best create a personal portfolio using Value Line s system. FIGURE 1-5 Educational Programming Video provides a list of available educational webcasts that can be viewed using Real Player or Windows Media Player. History of performance of the Timeliness ranks offers background information on Value Line s time-proven Timeliness Ranking System and a menu column with links to related information. 5

6 The Products & Services tab opens the Value Line Online Store where information is available about all the products and services Value Line offers. Purchases of the various products and services may be made by clicking on the name of the service. The Research Center tab opens to a page with links to Stocks, Mutual Funds, Daily Options, Convertibles, Special Situations and Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs). The Value Line Investment Survey Standard Edition only allows access to the menu items found under the Stocks selection. The other services listed in the menu column may be acquired separately, or combined as the Research Center service. The About Value Line tab includes facts and information relating to Value Line and provides a new menu column with the following selections: What is Value Line? (Mission Statement), Why Should I Use The Value Line Investment Survey, Value Line s Ranking System Performance, Value Line s Model Portfolio Performance, An Evaluation of Value Line s 3- to 5- Year Price Appreciation Potential, Quick Facts About Value Line, Inc., View Recent Value Line Financials, Value Line in the News and Job Opportunities. 6

7 The Support tab opens the Value Line Support page and offers a new menu column with the following menu items: Us, FAQs, How to Invest Guides, How to Read the Value Line Pages, Glossary of Investment Terms, Customer Service, Address Changes and Service Announcements. By default the display area provides information on contacting Value Line support services (See Figure 1-6). The Us menu item opens a list of all the different possible subjects of an inquiry. Clicking on one of the links in the display area will open the default application and automatically enter the appropriate address of the recipient. The FAQs menu item will provide a list of products and services in the display area. Each service is a hyperlink to a list of frequently asked questions relating to the selected topic. 8 The Glossary of Investment Terms menu item (See Figure 1-8) provides an alphabetized list of the investment terms used in Value Line s literature. At the top of the display area is each letter of the alphabet. Clicking on a letter opens a page of the terms beginning with that letter. Clicking on the Customer Service menu item opens the default page of the Support tab, but focuses on customer service contact information. The Address Changes menu item opens a form for the subscriber to fill in and submit via the Internet. Fields marked with a red asterisk are required fields and must be filled in prior to submitting the form. The Service Announcements menu item of the Support page, highlighted in red, is a link to any news, or updates, regarding the services Value Line provides. FIGURE 1-8 FIGURE 1-9 The Site Map tab opens the Site Map area of Value Line (See Figure 1-9). This page contains links to all the main areas of the website categorized by topic. 8

9 Clicking the Log On links on the Value Line homepage opens a prompt for the User ID and password (See Figure 1-10). Enter the information provided by Value Line to access the subscription area. The following page lists all the online services Value Line provides. Click on the appropriate service to which you subscribe to access the corresponding subscription page (See Figure 1-11). A link is provided at the top of this page for Service Announcements. Any news or updates regarding the services Value Line provides are available via this link. FIGURE 1-10 FIGURE

10 THE OPENING SCREEN The opening screen of the Value Line Investment Survey online subscription page (See Figure 2-1) consists of three sections; the Value Line header, a menu column on the left, and the display area to the right of the menu column. 1. The header section is displayed on every page of the Value Line website. It has a menu bar consisting of a number of tabs for easy access to frequently visited Value Line website pages. 2. The menu column on the left is divided into three sections: The Value Line Investment Survey, Research and Support. Each section displays a list of available menu items. The opening screen displays the Survey Issues selection, from the Value Line Investment Survey section, in the display area. 3. The display area, the main section on the right, displays the information from the selected menu item on the left. The Value Line Investment Survey subscription page is one of many sections of the Research Center on the Value Line website. A complete list of Value Line s available subscription services is available on the Products & Services page, which is one of the tabs on the menu bar in the header section. FIGURE

11 VALUE LINE INVESTMENT SURVEY MENU The Value Line Investment Survey section of the menu column (See Figure 2-2) has the following selections: Description, Survey Issues, Lookup Industry, Lookup Company, Rank Changes, Supplementary Reports, Stock Screening, Custom Report, Model Portfolios, Subscriber Portfolio and The Top 100 Value Line s #1 rank stocks. Each of these selections is described in this section of the user s guide. The default display when the program is first opened is the Survey Issues selection. See page 5 for more information about the Survey Issues selection. 12 SURVEY ISSUES The Survey Issues selection is displayed by default after log on and selection of the Value Line Investment Survey from the list of available subscription services. Links to all 13 issues in the current cycle can be found in the display area (See Figure 2-4). Value Line Publishing, Inc. issues the Value Line Investment Survey publications in 13- week cycles, reporting on the same companies in the same number of each cycle. The display is divided into two sections, Current Issue and Back Issues (Reference Library). CURRENT ISSUE The current issue is displayed with icons for Ratings & Reports (R&R), Selection & Opinion (S&O), Summary & Index (S&I), Ratings & Reports Cover Page (R&R) and Ratings & Reports Supplementary (R&R) (See Figure 2-5). The Current Issue section of the Survey Issues screen includes the issue number and date of the current issue of the Value Line Investment Survey, the five icons that link you to the various sections and pages of the survey. Left clicking on one of the back issues will display that issue s icons. FIGURE 2-5 FIGURE

13 Current Issue The current issue section of the Survey Issues display area includes: Ratings & Reports (R&R), Selection & Opinion (S&O), Summary & Index (S&I), Std. R&R Cover Page (R&R) and Std. R&R Supplementary (R&R) (See Figure 2-6). Ratings & Reports The Ratings & Reports (R&R) icon opens a list of all the companies included in that issue (See Figure 2-7). FIGURE 2-6 The column headings, Company (ticker), Industry and Timeliness are links that, when clicked on, rearrange the table by alphabetizing the data for the selected column. FIGURE 2-7 Each company name with ticker symbol and corresponding PDF symbol is a hyperlink to that company s Ratings & Reports survey page. The HTML icon will open a new webpage in HTML format of the information that is contained in the Ratings & Reports survey page for that company. A Value Line Investment Survey icon appearing in the Alert column is a link to open a new window with an update regarding that company. FIGURE 2-8 Each Industry name is a link to the corresponding Industry Look Up page. The elements in the Industry Look Up page table perform the same functions as the Ratings & Reports table (See Figure 2-8). 13

14 The company name, ticker symbol and PDF icon are hyperlinks to the Ratings & Reports survey page in Adobe Acrobat Reader format (See Figure 2-9). The HTML icon is a hyperlink to the Ratings & Reports survey page information displayed in a format compatible with most Internet browsers (See Figure 2-10). The Ratings & Reports Cover Page (R&R) icon is a report of the first two pages of the Ratings & Reports section of the Value Line Investment Survey in Adobe Acrobat Reader format. FIGURE 2-9 FIGURE

15 The Ratings & Reports Supplementary (R&R) icon opens an Adobe Acrobat Reader PDF file of the supplementary pages of the Ratings & Reports section of the Value Line Investment Survey (See Fig 2-11). The individual company reports found in this section provide information similar in context to the information provided in an update found in the Alert column. The Selection & Opinion (S&O) icon opens an Adobe Acrobat Reader PDF version of the Selection & Opinion newsletter (See Figure 2-12) that is published weekly as part of the printed Value Line Investment Survey Print Edition Part 2. 16 Back Issues (Reference Library) The Back Issues section of the Survey Issues menu item, also referred to as the Reference Library, can be found below the current issue. It consists of the preceding 12 weekly issues of the Value Line Investment Survey. These issues are listed by date and issue number. Clicking on each of these entries will display the icons associated with the selected issue (See Figure 2-14). The icons are: Ratings & Reports (R&R), Selection & Opinion (S&O), Summary & Index (S&I), Ratings & Reports Cover Page (R&R) and Ratings & Reports Supplementary (R&R). Only one back issue can be displayed in expanded format at a time. Selecting a different back issue will cause the screen to overlay the previously selected issue with the newly selected issue. 17 LOOKUP INDUSTRY The Lookup Industry menu item found below the Survey Issues menu item in the menu column opens the Lookup Industry page (See Figure 3-1), which displays the complete list of industries in table format. At the top of this page is a search field entitled: Enter the Industry with a data field to the right. The name of an industry may be entered into the data field followed by clicking on the OK button to search for a specific industry. BROWSE The Lookup Industry table consists of four columns with the following headings: Industry (Company Breakdown), Industry Commentary, Industry Rank and Issue Date. The table may be sorted by the industry name or industry rank by clicking on either of the column headings. The individual industry names listed below open the corresponding Search for Report by Industry table (See Figure 3-2). In some cases there may be industries listed in which Value Line does not evaluate any of the companies in that industry, but does provide an industry commentary. FIGURE 3-1 FIGURE 3-2 The Search for Report by Industry table is similar to the Ratings & Reports list in the number and types of columns and the information contained in them. 17

18 The link found in the Industry Commentary column opens the corresponding survey page in PDF format (See Figure 3-3). This document is the page from the Value Line Investment Survey that evaluates that industry. Search To search for a specific industry, enter the name of an industry in the data field provided at the top of the page and click on the OK button (See Figure 3-4). FIGURE 3-3 The resulting table is similar to the other tables provided in this database. The industry name will open a list of all companies from the Value Line Industrial Survey that are in that industry, if any. The PDF icon found in the Industry Commentary column is a link to the evaluation page from the Value Line Industrial Survey. FIGURE 3-4 If the search results in more than one industry name, the list may be sorted by the industry name or rank by clicking on the corresponding column heading. 18

19 LOOKUP COMPANY Selecting the Lookup Company menu item found in the menu column opens to a search page (See Figure 4-1). This search page can locate a particular company s survey from the Value Line Ratings & Reports. The Lookup Company page allows for a search by either company name, industry name or ticker symbol. The page is set to search by ticker symbol by default. FIGURE 4-1 To conduct a search, enter the search term in the data field provided and then select from the available search methods below by clicking on the appropriate button provided to the left of the three choices: Company, Industry or Ticker. Clicking the OK button begins the search. The results are displayed below in a table format similar to the other tables in this database (See Figure 4-2). The company name with ticker symbol or the corresponding PDF symbol is a hyperlink to that company s Ratings & Reports survey page in an Adobe Acrobat Reader PDF format. The HTML icon will open a new browser window with the information contained in the Ratings & Reports survey page in HTML format. The industry name for each company is a link to the corresponding Industry Look Up page. The Lookup Company and Lookup Industry lists can be sorted by Company (Ticker) or Industry by clicking on the column header. FIGURE

20 RANK CHANGES The Rank Changes menu item in the menu column opens the Timeliness & Performance Rank Changes page. The display consists of the 15 rows corresponding to the last 15 issues of the Value Line Investment Survey (See Figure 5-1). There are four columns, one for All Rank Changes, Ranks Moving Up, Ranks Moving Down, and File Format. Each entry in the first 3 columns is a link to a list of stocks that have changed rank on the displayed date. The dates in each row are the same for all columns. The All Ranks column is a link to a listing of all companies that have changed rank for the given date. The table displaying the list of companies may be sorted by any of the column headings. FIGURE 5-1 There are three available links above the table displaying the list of companies, All Ranks, Stocks Moving Up and Stocks Moving Down (See Figure 5-2). These three links correspond to the first 3 columns of the Rank Changes page respectively. Any company that changes rank on the week prior to the date listed will be included in the list. A company does not have to be included in the Ratings & Reports for that week to be included in the Rank Changes. FIGURE 5-2 Each link found in the File Format column opens a list in text format with the same information that is provided in the All Ranks list for the corresponding date (See Figure 5-3). FIGURE

21 SUPPLEMENTARY REPORTS The Supplementary Reports menu item in the menu column opens a list of links to supplementary reports (See Figure 6-1). There are two links available at the top of this page for viewing video webcasts in either Real Player or Windows Media format. The webcast links are updated each business day, and are available until a new webcast is issued. Either Real Player or Windows Media Player must be installed for these links to function properly. Please visit the Support link on our homepage for further assistance. Reports Each company name listed, with the date of its release, is a link that displays the supplementary report for the company. The list of reports dates back 3 months, corresponding with the issues found in the Survey Issues menu item page. When an item in the list is clicked on, the report appears in the space to the right of the list. FIGURE

22 STOCK SCREENING FIGURE 7-1 The Stock Screening menu item in the menu column opens the Value Line Investment Survey Stock Screener in the display area and a new menu column on the left side of the screen with items relevant to the Stock Screening section. The menu items are: The Value Line Investment Survey, Stock Screening, Questions and Answers, How to screen a stock, How to save a screen, How to customize your display and Glossary (See Figure 7-1). To return to the Value Line Investment Survey click on The Value Line Investment Survey menu item at the top of the menu column. Value Line Stock Screener The stock screener is a tool that allows for the filtering of stocks based on selected criteria (See Figure 7-2). The top of the screener has options for saving a screen or opening a previously saved screen. To save, click on the Save Screen As button. A File Download prompt will open. Be sure to click only the SAVE button. A Save As window will appear. Select the location where the screen will be saved, name the file and then press Save at the bottom right. To open a previously saved screen click, on the Browse button. Select the folder where the saved screen is located and highlight the file by clicking on it once. Once the file is selected, click on the Open button and the saved screen will be in the Stock Screening display area. The Stock Screener is divided into four sections, Company Information, Value Line Ranks, Value Line Preset Screens, and Additional Stock Information. 1. The Company Information section has data fields for Company Name, Ticker Symbol(s), International and Industry. The International and Industry data fields have menus that allow you to select items from a list. FIGURE The Value Line Ranks section can filter for Timeliness Rank, Performance Rank, Safety Rank, Technical Rank and Financial Strength. The Stock Screener will filter based on the values to the right of the ranks, if 22

23 selected. The results window will only display columns for the ranks used to filter. 3. The Value Line Preset Screens section has a scrolling menu containing 21 different preset screens from which to choose. 4. The last section, Additional Stock Information, consists of a drop down menu from which to select values that fill the data field rows located below. Up to ten values may be selected. At the top of this section is the Please select a field name here drop down list (See Figure 7-3). This alphabetized list contains all of the over 250 possible data values available for screening. Click on a data field item to add it to the Field Name column of the next available row. The Click here to select a field link contains the same data values as the Please select a field name here drop down list (See Figure 7-4). However, the list is organized into primary and secondary drop down menus. The primary list consists or 21 selections, each of which containing a secondary menu. Click on a data field from a secondary menu to add it to the Field Name column of the next available row. column heading Remove All will clear the contents of the Additional Stock Information table. Click on one of the Search buttons found at the top or bottom of the page to display the results table. The columns displayed in the results table may be edited. To do this click on the Click here to edit display options found to the right of the Reset All button at the bottom of the page. Go to page 19 for information about this option. FIGURE 7-3 FIGURE 7-3 Each row containing a data field entry in the Field Name column must have either a minimum or maximum value, or both, in their respective columns. The data contained in a row may be removed by clicking on the Remove link. Clicking on the 23

24 The search results are displayed in a new browser window. The table contains a list of all the companies that meet the screening criteria (See Figure 7-5). The rows may be sorted according to the information in the selected column by clicking on one of the column headings. There are four available links for each row displayed in the results table. The first icon on the left opens a new browser window of the Ratings & Reports page in Adobe Acrobat Reader PDF format. The blue icon opens a new browser window of the Ratings & Reports page in HTML format. The icon of a white page with a blue Q opens a new browser window of the Quote page for the selected company. The quote is current as of the time and date listed at the top of the Intraday Quote column. The red icon is a hyperlink to Underlying Options for the selected stock, but is only available for subscribers to the Value Line Options service. To return to the results page, press the Back button at the top left corner of the page. To return to the Stock Screener Results page for the above links, close the current browser window by pressing on the X in the top right corner of the page. FIGURE

25 CHANGING THE VALUE LINE STOCK SCREENER RESULT TABLE DISPLAY You may edit the way in which the results of your screening are displayed using the display option. To change the display settings of the Stock Screener Results page, click on the Click here to edit display options link, located to the right of the Reset button at the bottom of the Stock Screener display area (See Figure 7-6). A window containing an option menu will open with a selection of over 250 available columns. All available columns that may be selected are listed in the Available Columns box. To add a column to the results page, click on an item from the Available Columns list and click on Add>>> to move it to the Displayed Columns list (See Figure 7-7). either the Move Up or Move Down buttons can alter the order in which the columns are displayed. The items are displayed in columns in the order they are displayed in the box. To select how the resulting list is sorted, choose an item from the drop-down menu in the Sort by data field. Clicking in the check box next to Descending Order? will sort the results in descending order. Click in the box next to Always use saved displayed columns in result window? to save the current configuration for use in future Results pages. Click on the Save button followed by the Close button when finished. There is a limit of 50 items that may be placed in the Displayed Columns list. Once the desired items are placed in the Displayed Columns box, an item may be returned to the Available Columns list by clicking the <<<Remove button. 26 CUSTOM REPORT The Custom Report menu item in the menu column on the left side of the Value Line screen opens the Value Line Custom Report page in the display area (See Figure 8-1). Displaying a Report To display a complete report for a specific company enter the company s ticker symbol in the data field located to the right of Enter Ticker: data field and then click on Get Profile. A complete report will open in HTML format. FIGURE 8-1 FIGURE 8-2 Customizing a Report To specify which sections of the report will be displayed, click on the Value Line icon to the left of Custom Report in the upper left corner of the screen. A menu will appear allowing for the selection of individual sections of the report (See Figure 8-2). For multiple selections, hold down the Control Key (CTRL) while clicking on the selections. The order in which the sections are displayed can be manipulated with the Move Up and Move Down buttons. Click on the Save button to save the changes, and then click on Close. Enter the ticker symbol and click on the Get Profile to view the customized report (See Figure 8-3). FIGURE

27 MODEL PORTFOLIOS The Model Portfolios item in the menu column opens the Model Portfolios page in the display area and a new menu column (See Fig 9-1). The Survey Issues menu item is a link to the Value Line Investment Survey online webpage. The Model Portfolios menu item is the default display. It details the three different model portfolios that Value Line maintains and includes links to each of the three corresponding portfolios. FIGURE 9-1 FIGURE 9-2 The three numbered portfolio items in the menu column and the associated links in the display area of the Model Portfolio descriptions open the corresponding model portfolio (See Figure 9-2). 27

28 SUBSCRIBER PORTFOLIO The Subscriber Portfolio menu item in the menu column opens the online portfolio feature of the website. The first visit to this page will contain a message in the display area indicating that a portfolio does not exist. Click on the Create a Portfolio button in the display area to begin creating a new portfolio account. Once a new portfolio is created, a second button, Use your portfolio will appear. Click on this button to view the introduction page of the portfolio application. Click on the Continue button on the bottom of the page to advance to the portfolio feature. If a browser other than Internet Explorer is being used, a message may appear briefly describing the difference between the browsers. If this happens, click on the Continue button on the bottom of the page to advance to the portfolio feature. To create a new account, click on Portfolio, New, Account from the portfolio menu at the top of the display area. A new window opens prompting for the name and initial balance of the account (See Figure 10-1). To input a new transaction into the Portfolio, click on Portfolio, New, Transaction from the portfolio menu at the top of the display area. A new window opens with a drop down menu to choose the type of security to be transacted. The screen displays more options to select from once the security is chosen. The Symbol, Quantity and Price Per data fields must contain values for the application to add the transaction to the account. Multiple transactions may be entered on this screen by clicking on the Add Transaction button and then Enter a New Transaction after each transaction is completed. Press close window at the top of the screen to return to the portfolio. Press on the plus sign to the left of the account new to view the account information. The VL Updates column may display a Value Line logo, which is a link to updates about the company. Clicking on the Value Line icon displays an update similar to the Supplementary Reports (See Figure 10-2). FIGURE 10-1 FIGURE

29 The name of the company is a hyperlink to the Ratings & Reports in HTML format. The ticker symbol of each company is a hyperlink to an intraday quote (See Figure 10-3). Clicking on a column heading, such as % Change, opens a page with a brief definition of that term. Clicking on the arrows directly below the column headings sorts the table. FIGURE 10-3 To reorganize the way in which the columns are displayed, click on View, Columns (See Figure 10-4) and then select a column display from the list in the upper left corner of the new window (See Figure 10-5). To view information online about utilizing all the different features of the Portfolio, click on Help, Portfolio Help, and then choose Getting Started or Task Help. FIGURE 10-4 FIGURE

This page initially displays the default table Stocks Ranked 1 (Highest) for Relative Price Performance (Next 12 Months) (See Figure 11-2). To select from the 20 available tables use the drop-down menu at the top of the display area. FIGURE 11-1 To select a table, click on the arrow pointing down to the left of the text on the drop-down menu and left click on a selection. Click on the Go button to refresh the screen to the selected table. Each table offers the following columns: company name with ticker symbol, alert, if available, PDF file, HTML file, industry name and Timeliness rank with date of last change and direction of change. The table can be sorted by the columns: Company, Ticker, Industry or Timeliness. Each company name is a hyperlink to that company s Ratings & Reports survey page. Each Industry name is a link to the corresponding Industry Look Up page. The PDF icon in the Reports column will open the Ratings & Reports survey page for that company. A Value Line Investment Survey icon appearing in the Alert column is a link to open a new window with an update regarding that company (See Figure 11-3).
