1 MASTER TRAINERS TRAINING REPORT BUILDING CAPACITY IN COFFEE CERTIFICATION AND VERIFICATION FOR SPECIALTY COFFEE FARMERS IN EAFCA COUNTRIES (CFC/ICO/45) PROJECT JUNE 2011 [Type text] Page 1
2 1.0 BACKGROUND The training of master trainers from the nine (9) project participating countries is one of the objectives of the CFC/ICO/45 project. The minimum target number of master trainers to be trained in the project is thirty-six (36) drawn from Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe. To this end, the training of these professionals was conducted in the month of May 2011, in Nairobi, Kenya. The training was undertaken in two (2) batches from 8 th to 14 th May and 22 nd to 28 th May, respectively. A total number of thirty-nine (39) master trainers were trained from nine (9) countries. The increase in the number of trainees was necessitated by the request from local stakeholders to have additional master trainers benefit from the training at lower cost. Opening of the CFC/ICO/EU Project Training 2.0 TRAINING STRATEGY The training of the master trainers from the project countries was based on a generic standards manual. The project executing agency (PEA) contracted a service provide to develop a training generic training manual for the execution of the training of master trainers and other professionals in the project. To this end Coffee Management Services Ltd (CMS) of Nairobi Kenya was contracted to develop a generic manual and undertake training of the identified professionals in the project. BATCH 1 MASTER TRAINERS BATCH 2 MASTER TRAINERS The training of master trainers was undertaken in two batches comprising eighteen and twenty-one master trainers, respectively. The first batch training took place from 8 th to 14 th May and the latter batch from 22 nd to 28 th June. The total master trainers trained were thirty-nine drawn from Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, [Type text] Page 2
3 Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Appendix 1 shows the list of the master trainers trained in sessions under review. These trained professionals will in turn train the trainer of trainers (TOT) in their respective countries. Ultimately the trainer-of trainers will guide and train the farmers in the compliance of the prevailing certification standards. 3.0 TRAINING OUTCOMES This training activity delivered thirty-nine (39) master trainers under the project on building capacity for coffee certification and verification in the Eastern African region. This entails that respective countries in the project have been empowered with human expertise for certification and/or verification in the various certification standards prevalent in the region. This is an achievement of the objective of the project which entails building capacity within the EAFCA region for good agricultural and sustainability practices for socially acceptable, environmentally friendly and economically successful coffee production among producers through training of farmers to build certification. All master trainers were awarded with certificates as reflected in Appendix CONCLUSIONS The undertaking of the training for master trainers is a significant milestone in the fulfillment of the project activities on the project network diagram. With the team of master trainers in place, the in-country training activities of trainer-of-trainers and farmers in the country will be rolled out effectively. This rolled out will be done in sequence starting with countries that are more prepared in the implementation process. On the other hand, the next category of professionals to be trained will be the certification auditors / verifiers. This activity will be undertaken in four (4) groups of nine (9) persons, representing the nine project countries. This approach is undertaken in line with the complex requirements of the auditors training programme. An identified certification body has been contracted to undertake this activity. 4 Training feedback from the participants was undertaken through evaluation forms (a template in Appendix 2). Comments from the feedback are being evaluated for possible incorporation in the strategy. [Type text] Page 4
