2 Business Overview United General Insurance Company is one of Malawi s leading short term/general insurance companies and has been operating in Malawi for over 40yrs.The original name of the company was Pearl Assurance Company Limited. In 1995 the name changed to Property and General Insurance Company Limited following the sale of the business to Zimbabwe Reinsurance Corporation (ZimRe).United General Insurance Company is a result of merging Fide Insurance Company Limited and Property and General Insurance Company Limited as of 1st July 1998.In terms of shareholding, ZIMRE Holdings Limited (ZHL) and National Bank of Malawi (NBM) are UGI s shareholders. ZHL is an investment and coordinative company holding a number of synergistically linked subsidiary companies operating in Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, and Mozambique with insurance as the group s core business. National Bank of Malawi is a financial services company based in Malawi and is listed on the stock exchange. UGI is both a member of the Insurance Association of Malawi and the African Insurance Organization. UGI s head office is located in Blantyre and has branch offices in Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu 2

5 Executive Management Ian Kumwenda Managing Director Ian is a Chartered Insurer (UK) and holds a Master s of Science Degree in Strategic Management from the University of Derby. He has got 33 years experience in Insurance industry. Phyles Kachingwe General Manager Finance and Corporate Services Phyles: has an MSc. in Leadership and Change Management from Leeds Metropolitan University (UK); a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA UK); a Bachelor of Commerce Accountancy Degree and Diploma in Business Studies from University of Malawi (The Polytechnic). Phyles is currently studying for CII and is at Diploma level. Before joining UGI, Phyles has worked in almost all sectors of the Malawi Economy and has over 25 years experience in her field of expertise. Bywell Chiwoni General Manager Operations Bywell started his career at ABC Associates Insurance Brokers in 1999 where he gained valuable experience as a broker, before moving on to UGI in In 2008 he picked up an international job with Alexander Forbes Tanzania Limited as Business Unit Manager. Whilst in Tanzania he was in daily contact with advanced insurance markets and reputable players such as Lloyds Market in London UK, Wills Ltd (UK), RFIB (UK), Locton (USA), Reinsurance Solutions International Limited (Mauritius), Alexander Forbes (RSA) on Aviation, Marine Stock Through-Put, Banker Blanket Bond and other covers. He is a chartered insurer with 13 years experience in insurance industry. 5

6 Management Robert Chirwa Regional Manager - Central and North Robert has been in the insurance industry for 34 years. He joined UGl in, 1994 after 14 years insurance experience with NICO, AON Malawi and Royal insurance. He holds a Diploma in Insurance and is currently pursuing ACII. He has over ten years management experience and has attended various technical and management courses at I.I.S.A. (RSA) Zimbabwe, MIM and MCA (Malawi). He was President of the Insurance Institute of Malawi in 2004/05 period after serving for five years in the council. Ian Solomoni Claims Manager Ian is an Associate of The Chartered Insurance Institute (UK).He joined the Insurance Industry in 2002 and has over 10 years experience in General Insurance Business. He is currently working as a Claims Manager. He is also a part time lecturer at the Insurance Institute of Malawi College. Atupele Mangochi Business Development Manager Atupele is a holder of a Degree in Business Administration obtained from the University of Malawi; The Polytechnic. She has worked in various industries namely the Hospitality and the Airline Industries. She is currently studying for a certificate in insurance Elias Richard Chipungu Strategic Business Unit Manager Elias joined the Insurance Industry in March 1988 at Hogg Robinson (Malawi) Limited, now AON Malawi Limited. He also worked for Clarkson Notcutt (M) Limited and Fide Insurance Company Limited, until in July 1998 when Fide Insurance merged with Property and General Insurance Company to form United General Insurance Company Limited. He is a holder of the Advanced Diploma of The Chartered Insurance Institute (UK) and Association of Business Executives; Diploma 1.He was president of the Insurance Institute of Malawi for the financial year 2012/2013 and has been lecturing at the IIM College for over 7 years. He has vast experience in general insurance business. 6

7 Management MacRhonius Chikuse Strategic Business Unit Manager MacRhonius is a graduate from the University of Malawi (The Polytechnic). He briefly worked for Unilever SEA as a Purchasing Officer in 1992, then joined National Insurance Company Ltd in February 1993 as a Management Trainee Life Assurance Underwriting. In 1994 he joined government as an Accountant. After working for two years in Government, he joined the then Commercial Union which was later changed to CGU Insurance Company where he worked as an Underwriter. He worked there for seven years during which time he rose to the position of Section Head (Team Leader). He is currently working at United General Insurance Company Limited as a Strategic Business Unit Manager. Tobias Mlowoka Chirwa Assistant Strategic Business Unit Manager Tobias went to school in Malta where he did his insurance training at Mediterranean Insurance Training Centre and obtained a diploma in insurance. In 2002 he joined United General Insurance Company Limited as an underwriter. He is currently based in Mzuzu as Assistant Strategic Business Unit Manager. Emmanuel Harawa M buta Risk and Compliance Manager Emmanuel holds a Masters Degree in Audit Management and Consultancy from Birmingham City University s School of Business specialising in Internal Auditing, Enterprise Risk Management, Corporate Governance and Consultancy. He holds also a Degree in Business Administration and Diploma in Business Studies from the Polytechnic University of Malawi. Prior to joining UGI in December 2012 he had worked with British Petroleum Malawi, Malawi Revenue Authority and Malawi Government (Central Internal Audit Unit). He has over 7 years work experience in the fields of internal auditing, risk management and compliance. He is currently studying for a qualification in financial accounting at professional level with the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) -UK. Kanthungo Christopher Kapachika IT Manager Kanthungo Christopher Kapachika has over five years of progressive work experience in the non-profit sector, plus another three years of service in the private sector with his Information Technology career. His experience in Information Technology and Management ranges from Computer Networking, Telecommunications Support, Hardware Repairs, Systems Administration, Systems Analysis and Design, SQL, Business process Modelling, Project Management, Change Management, Governance, Leadership and Training Development and Facilitation. Kanthungo is a holder of a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Malawi, and a post graduate candidate for the Master of Business Administration with the Eastern and Southern Africa Management Institute. 7

8 Management Rex Kadzongwe Human Resource Manager Rex Kadzongwe is a holder of BBA degree from the Polytechnic, and a post graduate certificate in Management from Manchester Business School (UK). He also holds a Diploma in Insurance from the Chartered Insurance Institute (UK). He has over 10 years experience in human resources management and has worked for Oilcom (Now Puma Energy), Packaging Industries Malawi (Nampak) before joining UGI. Charles Khulumula Finance and Investment Manager Charles has over 15 years experience. He joined UGI in 1996 after working as an accountant for Fide Insurance for 3 years. He holds a diploma in accounting and is currently pursuing professional level of ACCA. Wax Maluwa Technical Accounts Manager Wax is a graduate with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree obtained at the Malawi Polytechnic in 2001.He joined the Malawi Housing Corporation in February 2001 as an Accountant up to He then joined United General Insurance Company in January 2003 as a Technical Accountant and was promoted to Technical Accounts Manager in 2010 because of impeccable performance. He is currently doing final level of the CIMA professional qualification.he has Ten years of extensive knowledge and experience of the Insurance Industry. 8

This is clearly stipulated in the Company Regulations and employment contracts. b) Code of Conduct/Ethics The conduct of employees is detailed in the Company Regulations which are always attached to the Employment Contract and monitored for enforcement. c) Confidentiality The company has in its portfolio important clients and over the years has upheld the principles of confidentiality, being fully aware of the sensitive nature of business.
