1 MSJC Classified Senate Status Report 1
2 MSJC Classified Senate Status Report Classified Staff According to the California Community College Chancellor s Office Data Mart, in Fall 2005 there were 319 Classified staff members at MSJC. The Classified staff membership makes up approximately 35 percent of the total staffing (Faculty, Administrative, and Academic). The chart below shows the current staffing distribution at MSJC Classified Staff Administration Tenured Track Faculty Academic Temporary Classified Senate The purpose of the MSJC Classified Senate is the following: Represent the various non-bargaining needs, concerns and viewpoints of all classified staff Promote the recognition of classified staff as a valued part of the college work force Serve as the official vehicle for classified participation in participatory governance as defined in applicable state codes and district policy. The senate is responsible for involving classified staff in campus committees which review non-restrictive policies, procedures, practices, needs, assessments, and development of new ideas Encourage and exchange of ideas and understanding between classified staff, faculty, administrators and the Board of Trustees, and to provide a centralized means of communication between classified staff and other areas of the college An opportunity to develop individual leadership contribution and development among the members of the classified staff. Members of the Classified Senate included: President Kathy Briones; Vice President Hal Edghill; Secretary Martha Crawford; Treasurer Mary Montano; Members-at-Large Joyce Hendley, Rebecca Teague, and Maggie Franklin; and Past President Kristi DiMemmo. 2
3 Classified Senate Accomplishments Community Outreach Through money raised during the annual fundraisers, the Classified Senate was able to participate in numerous community outreach activities. Holiday Can/Food Drive The entire campus community (faculty, staff, and administration) participated in this year s Classified Senate Holiday Can/Food Drive. Donations were collected in November 2005 and were distributed to the Community Pantry in San Jacinto. Operation School Bell The Classified Senate donated a total of $ to the Assistance League of Hemacinto for the Operation School Bell Program. The donation provided new backpacks filled with clothing, school supplies, books and hygiene items to six (6) deserving children. The Assistance League of Hemacinto assists over 22 elementary schools in the Hemet and San Jacinto School Districts serving nearly 1,000 children. Operation School Bell promotes enhanced self-esteem for every child, leading to a more regular school attendance and higher academic performance. Thanksgiving for All A total of $ was donated to the non-profit organization, Thanksgiving for All. The donation was used to purchase turkeys for the local community food pantries in both Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. The organization helps community pantries create Thanksgiving Day baskets for families in need this holiday season. In 2004, Thanksgiving for All donated over 2,000 turkeys to local community pantries. Katrina Educational Fundraiser In partnership with the campus community, the Classified Senate donated $ to the Katrina Educational Fundraiser to help support the rebuilding of the community colleges that were destroyed during Hurricane Katrina. Fundraising The Classified Senate held several fundraisers to support community outreach activities, the classified staff scholarship fund, as well as the MSJC Hurricane Katrina Educational Fundraiser. Fundraising consisted of several bake-sales on the Menifee Valley and San Jacinto Campuses as well as See s Candy Holiday Sales (Winter Holiday and Easter). Over $1,900 was raised as a result of the Classified Senate fundraising activities. Measure G Classified Senate members dedicated time and resources to the MSJC Measure G Campaign. The Classified Senate President mailed postcards to all Classified staff members soliciting classified staff volunteers for the phone bank. Approximately 53 classified staff members volunteered at the phone bank, dedicating over 275 hours to Measure G. Classified Staff Recognition The Classified Senate held its annual Holiday Luncheon in December 2005 to recognize classified staff and their contributions to the institution. Approximately 200 classified staff members and administrators were in attendance. 3
4 In addition to the Holiday Luncheon, the Classified Senate held elections for the Classified Professional of the Year. Over 20 classified staff members were nominated by their peers for this recognition. Nominees included: Sharon Armstrong, Helene Astorga; Justin Bennett; Rick Bittle; Freddie Briones; Kathy Briones; Al Gonzales; Marsella Guins; Star Harvey; Christine Hefley; Scott Kasper; Melissa LaCasse; Bonnie Lindsey; Jennifer Marrs; Scott Pederson; Geraldine Bitsy Sarabia; Angela Seavey; Carrie Stantz; Brian Twitty; and Julie Venable. Currently, the Classified Professional of the Year has not been announced. Classified Staff Development, Training, and Networking To support staff professional development, the Classified Senate held its annual Classified Staff Development Day on April 5, The theme for the event was Health and Wellness, featuring numerous presentations/workshops for staff focusing on nutrition, health, exercise and fitness, stress management, and self-defense. Approximately 150 classified staff members participated in the Staff Development Day activities. As a way to foster a sense of community and collaboration, the Classified Senate hosted a Fall Welcome Back reception for all classified staff members. The reception provided an opportunity for staff members to network with fellow classified staff members, discuss and sign-up for participatory governance committees, and meet the Classified Senate members. Classified Staff Services In collaboration with the Vice President of Instruction/Student Services, the Classified Senate worked to provide students with a larger space for the Eagle Access Center. The Classified Senate donated a portion of the classified staff lounge on the San Jacinto Campus to increase the square footage of the Eagle Access Center. This project was completed in Spring The Eagle Access Center is now capable of serving over double the amount of students compared to its previous location. Classified Staff Scholarship Three (3) staff members, Jackie Padilla, Angela Seavey, and Cindy Rozo received Classified Senate Staff Scholarships. Each recipient received a $ scholarship to go towards educational expenses, for a total of $1,200 that was awarded in scholarship funds this year. The scholarships were developed to provide classified staff members the opportunity to pursue higher education. Participatory Governance Two Classified Senate members were active participants in College Council. The Classified Senate President served as representative to the Board of Trustees. In addition, the Classified Senate designated 40 classified staff members to serve on campus-wide participatory governance committees including but not limited to the Budget, Student Services, Facilities, Matriculation and Outreach, Curriculum, Diversity, and ITC Committees. The Vice President of the Classified Senate worked closely with the Human Resources Department to select and assign classified staff members to District hiring committees. 4
