1 Winter Term 2016 INTRODUCTION Skiing is an important part of the JFK curriculum. It is a school subject and using our own JFK test system, the children will be tested on techniques throughout the programme. Each group will be made up of 4 7 students. OUR GOALS: SKIING: To teach and develop good technique on different types of slopes and in different conditions. To create an awareness and understanding of snow conditions and the changing nature of the mountain environment (risk management, weather, first aid, reading ski maps, etc.). To improve racing skills (training and racing). To learn other snow sports like snowboarding, cross country, sledding, etc. To respect the ski teachers and represent the school well, at all times. POSITIVE ATTITUDE: To encourage self-confidence and teach fair-play. To be respectful and well disciplined. To learn to evaluate and execute risk management. To inspire and motivate the children, creating an interest in wintersports that will encourage them to become lifelong participants. SPECIAL TASK THIS YEAR To do the Dario Cologna Fun Parcour Challenge on cross country skis. To learn more about the challenges disabled people have on the slopes. The following points will be discussed in school with our students. Kindly help us by reinforcing them at home so that your children will get the maximum benefit from skiing. SCHOOL UNIFORM IN WINTER TERM All JFK students must wear the school uniform daily. Please make sure that children bring the necessary items of equipment throughout the winter term. To have in school during the week: 2 pairs labelled ski gloves or mitts (one spare pair to use at break time to stay at school) Ski pass Labelled ski helmet and goggles Labelled backprotector Labelled skis with two straps (labelled) and labelled ski poles Labelled ski boots Labelled neckwarmer or a labelled Balaclava for the young children (there is one in the school ski jacket please check it if it is comfortable for your child) 1 extra pair of ski socks (to stay at school) To wear on skiing days: JFK ski jacket JFK ski pants JFK softshell (depending weather conditions) White turtleneck shirt Ski socks JFK red or black knutted hat Dark blue, black or brown winter shoes (see uniform booklet) Thermal underwear

2 On non-skiing days the secondary students can also wear their JFK cargo pants and just bring the ski pants for the different breaks. Primary children are allowed to take their ski pants off during lesson time and stay in their thermal underwear. They should be dark blue, black or grey. All items of clothing and equipment must be labelled with your child s name. Please note that the school will not label any day students equipment. Kindly remember to send a small snack with your child to take in his/her ski jacket pocket to eat during ski lessons. SKI AND SKI BOOT ROOM IN THE PAVILLION (HEATED) Skis and poles have to be on the labelled racks. There is an individually labelled place for all ski boots and an individually labelled box for the backprotector, helmet, goggles and gloves, socks (extra pairs). Year R 4 On Monday morning students must bring their ski equipment (skis, poles, boots, helmet, gloves, goggles, backprotector, neckwarmer and extra socks) to the school. Year 5 9 On Tuesday morning students must bring their ski equipment (skis, poles, boots, helmet, gloves, goggles, backprotector, neckwarmer and extra socks) to the school. We kindly ask you to not drive your car up to the Blumen Stricker parking area. Thank you for taking the time, together with your child, to walk up the hill and help carry their equipment. The children will have a better start to the day with fresh air. Thank you. General points about the ski equipment for the children You must look after your ski pass! Always store it in the same place when not in use. The school will purchase a replacement ski pass for children who have forgotten their ski passes. Parents who do not wish to have their children s ski passes purchased by the school must inform Ms. Katrin and they will be called to pick up their children at the Main Office after lunch. Treat the equipment with care at all times if not, the consequence will be that you will not ski and your parents will be called to collect you. Report any damage to skis, boots, helmets, bindings and backprotector immediately to your ski teacher or Miss Katrin. Clean your skis/boots before entering the ski room and place your equipment properly in your labelled storage area. Look after gloves, helmet, goggles and backprotector. You are not allowed to ski without them. Store gloves, helmet, backprotector and goggles in the boxes provided. Close the door when you leave the ski room. Help keep the ski room tidy at all times. SCHEDULE / TRANSPORT School classes will officially commence at 08:20. Children should be in their homeroom before 8h15 and have already stored all ski equipment in the ski room. Students arriving after 8h15 will be marked as late. Skiers have lunch at 12:05. Immediately after lunch, the class teacher will walk over to the changing area and make sure the children are ready and have the right equipment. Students should be in their assigned buses, with seat belts buckled by 12:50. If for any reason children do not have the right equipment, parents will be contacted and asked to collect their child and take them home. General points about transport Skis must always have two straps on and must be loaded and unloaded in an orderly manner with the help of an adult or older student. Treat your ski equipment with care. Do not lean skis against the vehicles. Great care must be taken when entering and leaving the buses and walking through parking areas. Do not ski anywhere other then designated ski areas, no skiing in parkings. Proper conduct is expected from JFK students at all times in the buses. Follow instructions of staff members, bus drivers and specially bus captains. Pick up time for all students on ski days (except Fridays, see below) will be 16:20 at the Pavillion. Fridays (if not a day with special arrangements): Year R 4 at 16:00, Year 5 9 at 16:20 Parents from R 1 students are kindly asked to help their children to get changed after their ski days.

3 The following transport list will be discussed carefully in the classes and class teachers will help the children to get ready. If you are picking up your child/children leave your car in the car parking by the bike shop and enjoy the walk up, or tell your child to walk down (only secondary students). In the afternoons we need the parking space to unload the students and skis. Even in the morning we ask you to leave the car in the car park down the hill. Year R-4 children will have a buddy system. Your child s buddy is highlighted in the same colour as your child s name on the transport list. They would be partners and will help each other and will always sit together Bus captains (in blue and bold) are responsible for their children in the bus and will make the final check and will be responsible together with the bus driver for the behaviour during each trip.

4 SKI SCHOOL PROGRAMME Lessons from 13h00 16h00 The following points about the Ski School will be discussed carefully in the classes with the ski teachers. General points Groups will be made in the first week of skiing (but can change during the winter term) The ski teacher is completely in charge of the class. The ski teachers all have the highest qualification level in the country. The students must listen carefully, follow instructions and be polite and respectful. Because of safety reasons, students are not allowed to sit down on the slopes. Students must ski safely, following the FIS-rules at all times. They should not use ski lifts until told to do so by the ski teacher. They must remember their manners in lift lines. They must be courteous to lift operators and follow their instructions. Students are not allowed to leave their ski class to ski with parents or friends. Students are not to buy sweets or gum during ski classes. A daily snack will be provided for boarders to take with them to ski school. Day students should bring their own snacks. Tea and/or water will be provided by the school during skiing. Proper conduct is expected from JFK students at all times on the slopes. Consequences for poor behaviour during ski lessons 1. Warning (reported to Miss Katrin, parents and homeroom teacher and will be marked on the weekly report) 2. Miss Katrin will bring the child back to school. Parents will be contacted and asked to collect their child and take them home. 3. The student will miss the next ski day but must stay in school for schoolwork or special tasks. Parents and homeroom teacher will be informed. 4. The child will have to explain his behaviour to his parents, homeroom teacher, Miss Katrin and Mr Behar. Ski races During the winter term there are several ski races in which the children will participate. Below you will find all the dates. You will receive more detailed information closer to the dates. Ski races marked in black means, that all children are participating and don t have to sign up. Races marked in green will be for selected children only, or voluntary by signing up (you will get more information during the winter). Be aware that some of the races have a cost and that by signing children up we will charge the amount to your account. If you need to cancel on the day of the race, contact the ski teacher in charge or Mrs Katrin as early as possible. Ski race volunteers JFK will host 5 ski races this winter. For those we will need as many volunteers as possible to help on the slope, at the start or at the finish area. We hope that a lot of parents will come and support their children during the race anyway and combine that with helping in the organisation of the race. Sign up forms will be sent out in January. Saturday race training Every Saturday (if there is not a race) we offer race training from 9.30/ in Saanen for children who can ski parallel. Sign up forms will be sent out before we start the winter term. Challenge by Choice Fridays for Year 5 9 Due to our packed calendar there will be two or three Challenge by Choice Fridays at the end of February and beginning of March for Year 5 9. The children will be able to choose between: race training, cross country skiing, snowboarding and sledding. Sign up will be in January. Parents skiing Every Thursday morning there will be parents skiing with the JFK ski teachers. You will get more information about the meeting point, times and programme every Monday during the winter term and you can sign up by each Wednesday midday. There will be two special Tuesday mornings in January (19 th, 26 th ) where we will offer you the possibility of trying out cross country skiing. If you have any question, do not hesitate to contact me. Best regards, Mrs Katrin katrin@jfk.ch
