Emphasis on the study and analysis of various theoretical approaches to organization theory and management. OBJECTIVES This course will introduce students to theoretical frameworks for understanding management, organizations, and their environments. Successful completion of the course will lead students to better understand what managers do and why they do it, as well as why organizations have the variety of forms and structures that they do. Students will be able to explain the appropriateness and implications of different management and organizational choices. The focus in this course is on macro-level aspects of organizations. If you have taken GMGT 2070 (Introduction to Organizational Behavior) you will find that this course picks up where that one ends. Org behavior concerns individuals and teams in organizations. 2 FORMAT To have learned something, you need to understand it, but you also need to be able to do something with that understanding. For example, many of you probably understand what is required to throw a perfect spiral pass, shoot a three-point shot or sing a song in key. However, despite knowing these things, I suspect that many of you would not be able to actually perform those actions in a consistent fashion. Knowledge and understanding are prerequisites for useful practice, and it is only through useful practice that we actually learn. Therefore, this class will be focused on both increasing your understanding and having you practice using that understanding. Our goal is for you to learn about organizations. Usually when we cover a topic in the course, we will begin with understanding. You should read in advance of the class, and I will help to clarify issues you did not understand in your reading. Once you know the material related to the new topic, we will practice with it, reflecting on how it relates to events in the real world. ASSESSMENT You will earn a final score based on your performance in four kinds of assessment, based on the following formula: Quizzes 25% Mid-term exam 25% Organizational analysis 20% Final exam 30% 100% The score calculated from that formula will be converted to a letter grade as follows: Score Grade A A B B C C D <50 F QUIZZES (total 25%; throughout course) There will be ten (10) quizzes, each one based on the material covered in one unit. The quizzes will be primarily multiple choice in format. They will assess your comprehension of the material covered in the textbook and the lectures. You may not refer to any material during the quizzes. If you do not complete a quiz, you will receive a score of zero for that particular quiz. Your total score for the quizzes will be based on an average of your six best individual quiz scores (i.e., the four worst scores will not be used). Because the four worst scores are being removed, there will be no make-up quizzes. MID-TERM EXAM (25%; in class on February 24) There will be an in-class exam on February 24. It will cover all of the content addressed in assigned readings and in class up to that point. The mid-term exam will be in open book format: you may refer to your text and your notes; however, no electronic devices of any kind will be allowed. 3 choice and short answer questions. The mid-term exam will assess your ability to use and apply the knowledge you have gained. ORGNIZATIONAL ANALYSIS (20%; submitted via UM Learn before April 4) You will complete an analysis of a business organization of your choosing, applying the knowledge you have gained to reflect on the organization s structure, environment, strategy and future options. Complete details will be provided on UM Learn. Late submissions will have their score reduced by 10% of the maximum score for every 24 hours or portion thereof that they are late. FINAL EXAM (30%; time TBD) There will be a final exam at a time to be determined by the exam scheduling system. The exam will be cumulative; it will cover all of the material addressed in the course. The exam will consist of short and long answer questions. It will be in open book format; you may refer to your text and your notes (no electronic devices). If there is any conflict with the exam time that is scheduled, you should know that the Department of Business Administration has instituted a policy which provides ONE DATE ONLY for students who have deferred their final exams. The deferred final exam date has been pre-set for May 6 at 1300 in Drake room 104. For additional information, refer to the University of Manitoba s Policy 1305 Exam Regulations (http://umanitoba.ca/admin/governance/governing_documents/academic/454.htm) or the Undergraduate Program Office for rules and regulations concerning deferred exams. JUST IN CASE ASSIGNMENT (OPTIONAL; submitted via UM Learn before April 11) Occasionally, students earn final scores that place them near the cut-off point for a higher letter grade. I am offering everyone the option to complete a just in case assignment if they fear they might need a point or less to earn a better letter grade. There are several things you should know about this assignment: 1. It is optional. You do not need to complete a just in case assignment 2. It will be scored on a pass-fail basis (i.e., no partial marks) 3. If you are within one (1) point of earning a higher letter grade and you submit a just in case assignment that earns a passing score, you will receive that higher letter grade as your final grade in the course 4. The just in case assignment will ONLY be used to move a student off the borderline into a higher letter grade. It will not be used to move a student onto the borderline between letter grades. 5. Because your final score depends on your performance in the final exam, you will not know for certain whether you need an extra point. That is why it is called a just in case assignment. If you choose to submit one, you would do so just in case you need it in the end If you want to submit a just in case assignment, you must do so through UM Learn before the exam period begins. You may do so by submitting either one of the options below. Option 1: Custom Video Report. You would create an original short video that explains and demonstrates some important concept covered in the course. You may use actual or fictitious organizations to illustrate your points. The video should be designed for educational purposes (i.e., something that future sections of GMGT 2060 will watch to better understand the concept you are discussing). It must be accompanied by a one-page written summary that indicates: (a) the specific concept being illustrated, (b) the value to be gained in class from using the video (i.e., what does it add?), and (c) suggestions on how to effectively use the video to help others understand the concept. This video report could be produced individually, or if you contact me in advance and secure permission as a group submission. Option 2: Three Existing Videos Report. You would identify three existing short video clips that would be useful for explaining concepts from the course. These clips can be drawn from YouTube, movies or other sources that could be shown in class. Each of the three clips must be accompanied by a one-page written summary that indicates: (a) the exact source (e.g., URL address or time of clip from a movie), (b) the Arran Caza GMGT 2060 Winter 2016 page 3 of 7

4 specific concept being illustrated, (c) the value to be gained in class from using the video (i.e., what does it add?), and (d) suggestions on how to effectively use the video to help others understand the concept. If you choose to submit a just in case assignment, you would do so by completing one of the two options above. It will be graded on a pass-fail basis as to whether it satisfies all requirements, displays a correct understanding of the concept, and would be useful in helping others to better understand that concept. Late submissions will not be accepted. OTHER POLICIES Missed assessments. Except for deferred final exams, which have their own policy as described above, it is not possible to complete an assessment that is missed. In extenuating circumstances (e.g., appropriately documented medical situations), a missed assessment will simply be removed from the calculation of your final score. In the absence of fully documented extenuating circumstances, missed assessments will receive a score of zero. Religious Holidays. The University of Manitoba acknowledges the right of all students to observe recognized holy days of their faith. Please inform me as soon as possible of your intended absence(s). Special Learning Needs. Students with special learning needs (i.e., those who have legitimate reasons to require extra time, special aids or other supports) should advise me of this fact within the first two weeks of the course or immediately upon their registration with Student Accessibility Services (SAS). I am happy to make arrangements to support your success, but you need to tell me in advance. Please include appropriate documentation from SAS. UM Learn. Outside of class time, most of our interactions will be conducted through UM Learn. I will post all course-related files there and all announcements will be sent by through UM Learn. Please be sure to check your university and visit UM Learn regularly. Failing to check these two is not an acceptable excuse for missing announcements related to the course. Attendance. All of my students are adults, and I feel they should be treated with the respect and autonomy that attend adulthood. As a result, it is up to you whether or not you physically attend class sessions. I have only two attendance requirements. First, if you are going to attend, you must attend during your assigned section s time. It is not possible for you to attend during another section s time. Second, please be prepared for and engaged in any class session that you do attend. If you need to miss class session, do so; but when you attend, please respect yourself and your peers enough to be ready to participate. Electronics. Except where some other policy overrides (e.g., no electronic devices during quizzes or exams), you are welcome to use whatever electronic device you like in class as long as no one me or your peers feels it is a distraction. If a device is distracting to anyone, I will ask you turn it off and/or remove it from the class. Otherwise, you are free to use your devices. However, it is only fair to warn you that I consider a face turned toward a device to be the same thing as a raised hand. For example, if you appear to be focused on your phone rather than the class discussion, I will interpret that action to mean that you are confident in your understanding of the material and therefore are willing to answer my questions. 5 Academic Integrity Policy I.H. Asper School of Business It is critical to the reputation of the Asper School of Business and of our degrees that everyone associated with our faculty behave with the highest academic integrity. As the faculty that helps create business and government leaders, we have a special obligation to ensure that our ethical standards are beyond reproach. Any dishonesty in our academic transactions violates this trust. The University of Manitoba General Calendar addresses the issue of academic dishonesty under the heading Plagiarism and Cheating. Specifically, acts of academic dishonesty include, but are not limited to: using the exact words of a published or unpublished author without quotation marks and without referencing the source of these words duplicating a table, graph or diagram, in whole or in part, without referencing the source paraphrasing the conceptual framework, research design, interpretation, or any other ideas of another person, whether written or verbal (e.g., personal communications, ideas from a verbal presentation) without referencing the source copying the answers of another student in any test, examination, or take-home assignment providing answers to another student in any test, examination, or take-home assignment taking any unauthorized materials into an examination or term test (crib notes) impersonating another student or allowing another person to impersonate oneself for the purpose of submitting academic work or writing any test or examination stealing or mutilating library materials accessing test prior to the time and date of the sitting changing name or answer(s) on a test after that test has been graded and returned submitting the same paper or portions thereof for more than one assignment, without discussions with the instructors involved Group Projects and Group Work Many courses in the Asper School of Business require group projects. Students should be aware that group projects are subject to the same rules regarding academic dishonesty. Because of the unique nature of group projects, all group members should exercise special care to ensure that the group project does not violate the policy on Academic Integrity. Should a violation occur, group members are jointly accountable unless the violation can be attributed to a specific individual(s). Some courses, while not requiring group projects, encourage students to work together in groups (or at least do not prohibit it) before submitting individual assignments. Students are encouraged to discuss this issue as it relates to academic integrity with their instructor to avoid violating this policy. In the Asper School of Business, all suspected cases of academic dishonesty are reported to the Dean s office in order to ensure consistency of treatment.
