Gould Office: 652 Drake Centre Phone: Office hours: By appointment Monday 4:00-5:00 p.m. Wednesday 4:00-5:00 p.m. COURSE OBJECTIVES The purpose of this course is to provide an introduction to financial planning techniques used in professional practice. The goal is to develop a consistent framework of the basic financial principles necessary for constructing a complete financial plan and responding to personal financial situations. Techniques of financial assessment will be developed considering taxation, investment alternatives, targeting savings levels, insurance, retirement planning and relevant legislation. By the end of the course students should have a good understanding of the objectives and techniques of the financial planning process. TEXTBOOK The textbook for the course is: Ho, Kwok and Robinson, Chris, Personal Financial Planning, Fifth Edition, Captus Press, Toronto, LECTURE NOTES Copies of the PowerPoint slides containing lecture notes, equations and graphs will be placed on Desire2Learn. Students should download a copy of the notes for the chapters covered in the lecture before each class. It will not be possible to follow the lecture without these notes.

2 EVALUATION All students are required to submit a completed information card on or before class on January 21, Mid-term Examination 30% Tuesday, February 10, 2015, 7:00 9:00 p.m. Group Project: Topic outline 5% Wednesday, February 4, 2015, start of class Class presentation 10% TBA: March 9 April 8, 2015 Written report 15% April 8, 2015, start of class Final Examination 40% Final Exam Period, April 13-27, 2015 GROUP PROJECT The group project (three students per group) will be a report on a topic relevant to personal financial planning. Each group will give an oral presentation to the class and submit a final written report on or before the start of class, Monday, April 8, The written report may not exceed 10 double spaced pages. Additional tables and figures may be appended as necessary. Topics may be selected from the following general areas: 1. Income Tax Planning 2. Life, Health and Disability Insurance 3. Property, Home and Automobile Insurance 4. Debt Capacity 5. Consumer Credit 6. Residential Mortgages 7. Home Valuation 8. Investments: Individual Investor Issues 9. Portfolio Management: Individual Investor Issues 10. Mutual Funds 11. Income Trusts 12. Internet Effects on Personal Finance 13. Pension Plans 14. Retirement Planning 15. Estate Planning 16. LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL RECEIVE A 2 MARK DEDUCTION.] Submit a specific topic (typewritten) within your assigned general area and a one-page outline (point form) of the issues to be investigated. Specifically, acts of academic dishonesty include, but are not limited to: - using the exact words of a published or unpublished author without quotation marks and without referencing the source of these words - duplicating a table, graph or diagram, in whole or in part, without referencing the source - paraphrasing the conceptual framework, research design, interpretation, or any other ideas of another person, whether written or verbal (e.g., personal communications, ideas from a verbal presentation) without referencing the source - copying the answers of another student in any test, examination, or take-home assignment - providing answers to another student in any test, examination, or take-home assignment - taking any unauthorized materials into an examination or term test (crib notes) - impersonating another student or allowing another person to impersonate oneself for the purpose of submitting academic work or writing any test or examination - stealing or mutilating library materials - accessing tests prior to the time and date of the sitting - changing name or answer(s) on a test after that test has been graded and returned - submitting the same paper or portions thereof for more than one assignment, without discussions with the instructors involved. Group Projects and Group Work Many courses in the I. H. Asper School of Business require group projects. Students should be aware that group projects are subject to the same rules regarding academic dishonesty. Because of the unique nature of group projects, all group members should exercise special care to insure that the group project does not violate the policy on Academic Integrity. Should a violation occur, group members are jointly accountable unless the violation can be attributed to a specific individual(s). Some courses, while not requiring group projects, encourage students to work together in groups (or at least do not prohibit it) before submitting individual assignments. Students are encouraged to discuss this issue as it relates to academic integrity with their instructor to avoid violating this policy. In the I. H. Asper School of Business, all suspected cases of academic dishonesty are passed to the Dean s office in order to ensure consistency of treatment. 6
