Mrs. Acocella 6 th Grade Exploratory French Students in Mrs. Acocella s French class are learning the alphabet and accent marks. Since memorization is easier with singing and music, students have learned two alphabet songs to help them sound off the French alphabet. Students have also been practicing spelling French words with online games and classroom activities. Ms. Parker 7th Grade Exploratory Spanish The students just finished learning about the body parts, colors and numbers in Spanish. As a culminating activity at the end of the unit students created a monster. They had to listen to oral directions in Spanish and then draw the monster according to the directions. The students did a great job and really understood the directions in Spanish.

Mrs. London 7 th Grade Exploratory Spanish These are some of the MONSTRUOS that Mrs. London s 7 th grade Exploratory Spanish class created after listening to a Spanish dictation of the description. The artists were using all of their Spanish language knowledge of the numbers, colors and body parts to transform what Mrs. London said into the creations you see below. Artist Matt L. Artist Lily J. Artist Noah F. Artist Alexus P.

Artist Tim C. BAND Students are doing well learning their Spring Concert music. Check the band website for upcoming concert dates. Students are eagerly anticipating the warmer weather to begin their marching season. Also, the Advanced Band and Jazz Band is busy preparing for their upcoming participation in the Trills and Thrills Music Festival which is Friday, June 6, CHORUS Chorus is busy preparing for the Spring Concert which will take place on Thursday May 15, Concert attire is solid, white tops and black bottoms. Also, the Advanced Chorus is busy preparing for their upcoming participation in the Great East Music Festival which is Friday, May 30, GENERAL MUSIC 6 th graders are learning music notation which will transition into their learning to play the piano. 7 th graders have been studying the roots of American Popular music and are currently learning about the inequalities between black and white musicians in the music industry. We will be reading the transcript to Hairspray and watching the movie version of the musical.

Team 2 is kicking off St. Patrick s Day with a weeklong Pot O Gold food drive. Some of our students, along with the art teacher, created a beautiful collection display where students can place their contributions!

March Madness begins today with kids filling out their brackets! Students will participate in some college basketball activities integrating geography, science and math! Go Providence College! In the classroom.the focus in math for the next few weeks will continue to be algebraic expressions. Equation, functions and inequalities will be our next topic! In Science students are finishing up their layers of the atmosphere project. For this project, students needed to create a scaled atmosphere diagram as well as incorporate a temperature graph. This week students are researching the different layers and learning where different objects in our atmosphere can be found. Lastly, in social studies and English, Mr. Bruckner and Mr. Ryan continue an integrated approach focusing on the novel The Cay while learning about the geography of Latin America. Team 5 students received a commendation from the Lincoln Town Council and Town Administrator for helping complete holiday food baskets for local families in need. Emily Gaboriault, Tom Almond and Colby Laferriere accepted the awards at the monthly Town Council meeting on behalf of their classmates. Excellent work, students! Coming soon: Spring Forum - Friday, April 11, 2014.

MATH Each year, grade 7 students on Team 6 learn about proportionality and how it is represented. Our students work independently to create a large representation of their favorite book, character, game and much more. The book covers are so realistic they are displayed in our library. Great job team 6!! By doing this project, students have a much better understanding of what it means to be proportional and the project becomes the root of many great classroom discussions. Students also have a great memory of grade seven to take home with them!

ENGLISH We have been working on a novel study of Roll of Thunder, Hear my Cry by Mildred Taylor, a novel that takes place during the Great Depression in Mississippi where segregation and racism were rampant. Students have learned about the time period of the novel through a PowerPoint activity and a fabulous mini movie created by Mr. Morris on Team 5. Students have just finished an essay about how the main character s perspective changed once she (Cassie Logan) was exposed to the racism surrounding her. Students did an excellent job using evidence from the text as support and adding their interpretations of how she was affected by an event in the book. Students are currently working on creating a Reader s Theater performance based on a scene from the book complete with props and costumes. They are very excited to prepare and present their performances!

SCIENCE During the past week, students in Ms. Carlson s seventh grade science class worked in the library to complete a disease research project. Mrs. Doherty, the school librarian, had the students use the Learning.com website to access different resources for this project. Students used their research to create a Wanted poster for the pathogen that causes the disease. This poster template was also accessible online through the Learning.com website, and it gave students the opportunity to work in any room in the school as well as from home computers.

Team 3/4A In science, Team 3 has completed our Layers of the Atmosphere Maps. Photos will soon be posted on Mr. Barboza s website under Class Updates. We are moving into the next phase of our Earth Science and Weather unit, which is the water cycle. Team 4a has been working hard trying to figure out the mystery behind genetics and probability. We will be making our way into human inheritance in the coming week. The students in Mr. Kilsey s sixth grade classes have been busy working in the LMS Library. They ve been learning about the history of the Olympics, the role of the International Olympic Committee and how Olympic locations are chosen. After exploring these topics online, the students worked in pairs to create PowerPoint presentations that outlined the reasons their countries should be chosen for the 2022 Winter Olympics or the 2024 Summer Olympics. Each group presented their PowerPoint to the International Olympic Committee (group of students) and tried to convince them that their country would be the best site for the future games. Mrs. Volpe s 7 th grade students are finishing their Application of Percents unit. They have learned several real-world applications of percents such as taxes, tips, commissions, simple interest, discounts and mark-ups. They recently took part in a formative assessment where they traveled from station to station with a partner solving various real-world percent applications problems. They also learned tricks for finding common tip percents (5%, 10%, 15% and 20%) so they will be able to easily find the percents of any number WITHOUT using a calculator. Many students went on to impress their parents with their tip skills by helping to calculate the tip the next time their families went out to dinner! In ELA, Team 3 students are on a mission to persuade others by writing a five paragraph persuasive essay. They are in the process of choosing a topic and developing an introduction paragraph. Graphic organizers have been distributed to the students to help guide their thought process and to ensure that the elements of the introduction paragraph are included. Students have to be creative when including a hook, introductory information, and a strong thesis. Research in the library is under way and Mrs. Doherty, the school librarian, is busy inputting links on the website to help students to research articles that relate to their topic. The

students are also being taught the proper way to cite information and create a work cited page. We look forward to reading the students essays and finding out what topics they are passionate about. We hope that this process will encourage them to enjoy writing while learning the essential elements of persuasion.
