As usual, we have been busy with activities. Thirty-five registrants were able to donate thirty-one pints of blood at our April 23 annual drive attaining goal of 30. Chan Peter Lehr chaired our Knights of Columbus' Recruitment Drive the weekend of April 25 and thus far, we have three candidates taking their 1st and 2nd degrees. This coincided with Handicapped Encounter Christ retreat wherein PGK Bob Alley coordinated with a few Brothers. The Fourth Degree Color Corps was able to accommodate St. Joe's request for participating at Jubilee May 3rd and Mary's May Crowning preceding General Meeting where Charlie Herbert presented our Council's flowers. Another Food Drive was run by Bob Normandin and Charlie Herbert May 16/17. We collected $40 at our General Meeting towards Council Donald J. Burns; (Veterans) annual fundraiser. It was another great day on Sunday, May 24 for St. Joseph's Parish Picnic wherein many Brothers helped cook breakfast and corn on the cob, burgers, dogs and sausage for lunch. A special thank you to PGKs Anthony Paruolo, Joe Lupo and Treasurer F.X. Shields. Memorial Day had its honoring parade, laying of wreaths and speakers with KofC Charlie Herbert chairing. Council #821 was responsible for admissions and raffle tickets coordinated by DGK Mike Russo at the Ninth district Sunshine Fundraiser to benefit pediatric cancer held May 30th at Sts. Philip and James. The efforts of the nominating committee are appreciated in recommending officers slate for the next Columbian year. Fr.Seyfried Council will be able to present two $500 Peter Brust and one $1,000 Paruolo Family College Scholarships to 2015 graduating students chaired by PGK Tom McCabe. We look forward to a couple of upcoming events including Kings Park Day, Night at the Races and Pot Luck dinner. Vivat Jesus. Fraternally, Jim Sherrard Grand Knight
2 Knight Light May 2015 Page 2 ST. JOSEPH S CHURCH MAY CROWNING On Monday, MAY 18, 2015 The annual May crowing of our Blessed Virgin Mary was held in the church at 7:00 PM. All parish organizations had the honor of placing a vase of flowers at her altar to begin the ceremony. As this writer carried Council 821 s flower offering up the main aisle, his thoughts turned to the vital role Our Blessed Mother plays in all our lives. Our Knights of Columbus honor guard led the procession of our celebrant, Fr. Thomas Tassone, Associate Pastor. The ceremony consisted of appropriate prayers, readings and music and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. It was highlighted by the living rosary presentation by our Catholic Daughters of America Court Ave Maria. Many attendees placed fresh flowers on the crown that was to be placed on our Blessed Mother s statue on the parish green. After Benediction, we processed to that statue where the crown was placed by Laura Gallagher, wife of our deceased brother, John Gallagher. Hospitality followed in the parish hall. Charlie Herbert-Director of Church Activities Left, Honor Guard stands for procession; Right, Blessed Mother s flowers. Mid left, first communicants; Mid right Fr. Thomas blesses the flowers. Bot left, Exposition of Blessed Sacrament, Bot right, Fr. Thomas with KofC Honor Guard.
3 Knight Light May 2015 Page MEMORIAL DAY PARADE Memorial Day was first founded on May 5, 1868, as Decoration Day to honor the war dead from the Civil War which ended in May 30 was picked as the day to honor the graves of the fallen with flowers because it was believed that flowers would bloom all over the country on that date. Local observances took place as early as 1866 but it was not until after World War I that the day was expanded to include all those who have died in American wars. In 1971 Congress and President Johnson declared it a national holiday and moved it to the last Monday in May. We are all asked to honor a minute of silence at 3PM on that day to remember those who have died in service to our nation. This year s parade stepped off at 9 AM from RJO school and proceeded from there to the junction of Pulaski Road and Rt. 25A and then down Rt. 25A to the War Memorial at the Library. Council 821 had a strong representation and proudly followed our colors down the route. We were led by our pastor of St. Joseph s Church, Fr. Seán Gann, PGK Anthony Paruolo and Chancellor Peter Lehr. Fr. Seán and PGK Paruolo placed a wreath of honor which represented both the church and the council. PGK Paruolo also made a stirring speech based on a conversation he had with a veteran of the 8th Air Force who he met while visiting the World War II memorial in our nation s capital. It is always uplifting to see the support given to this event by both the participants and observers along the route. We thank Donald C Monro Post No.944 for sponsoring the parade and VFW Post 5796 for its hospitality. Charlie Herbert Council Food Drive The Council will be holding its second annual food drive on Saturday May 17 and Sunday May 18 between the hours of 10am and 2pm at the council hall. Donations will support the needs of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and we invite canned and packaged foods such as cereal, pasta, peanut butter, jelly, soup, baby food, pancake mix, juice boxes, etc. Last year, through your efforts, we were able to distribute over 250 pounds of food to needy local families and look forward to even more this year. Also, we need some members to help collect the food items on these days and ask that you give us an hour or two. Please call Charlie Herbert at or Bob Normandin at , if you can assist. Thank you. Bob Normandin FOOD DRIVE A SUCCESS PHOTO CREDITS: THANKS TO PGK FRANK MERCURI AND BROTHER MARTY MULARKEY FOR THEIR PHOTO CONTRIBUTIONS.
4 Knight Light May 2015 Page 4 St. Joseph Parish Picnic The annual Church of St. Joseph in Kings Park was a huge success. First of all the weather cooperated and it was perfect day for families to come and enjoy the day with fellow parishioners. Following the Mass at 11:00 the families headed toward the food tents where the Knights of Fr. Seyfried Council 821 along with many other Parish organizations awaited. Several of our members arrived at 6:30 AM to set up and make sure all was ready. Anthony Paruolo, Tom Mc Cabe, Don Giglio, Joe and Greg Lupo, Frank Shields, Grand Knight Jim Sherrard and so many others worked hard to make sure the food was ready and kept on coming as the over 1,500 parishioners lined up throughout the day. Fr. Sean was very grateful for the work of K of C Council 821 and the other organizations who make events like this possible. It was just another one of those special days when we can feel particularly blessed to be part of this special parish and especially to be part of K of C council 821. Marty Mullarkey
