September 2015 District 138 Division 4 St. Michael s Knights of Columbus Council Poway, California stmichaelsknightsofcolumbus.com Grand Knight s Corner by Grand Knight Bob Ippolito Special points of interest: Spirit of the Fourth Donation Presented Shining Armor Award Received by Bill Uberti A Day at the Races Inside this issue: August was a quiet month for this Council, but there are still a few items to report this month under the heading of unfinished business. Unfinished Business Pot Luck Dinner was a Big Success First and as highlighted in the last newsletter, a Pot Luck Dinner was held on Friday July 31 at 0700 PM at the K of C Chambers, which was decorated as a Hawaiian setting. Everyone brought a Hawaiian dish and just about everyone wore a Hawaiian outfit. This event was well attended with 46 people attending including our own pastor, Father John Dolan, in Hawaiian wear, and our very special guest, SK Abe Doliente, the recent Past State Deputy for the state of California. This event was a very big success with everyone having a great time due in large part to the efforts of SK John Giltner and his wife Linda, who also acted as bartenders. The special drink of the night at the bar was a Mai Tai cocktail. We hope to have another Pot Luck Dinner soon! GK Bob Ippolito, Barry Nally from Council 9710, and Director of Operation Rebound Nico, plus a young veteran of the program. This organization help veterans and active duty personnel get back to a normal life through the use of athletics. Operation Rebound program is the premier sports and fitness program for American military personnel, veterans and first responders with physical challenges. It provides unparalleled opportunities to pursue active, athletic lifestyles by offering access to funding for equipment and training and competition expenses, Military Medical Center Physical Training (MMCPT) and sports clinics. Operation Rebound funds equipment, training and travel expenses that can help our injured troops and first responders to harness the healing power of sport whether the goal is to win Paralympic gold or just run around the block.

ON A SAD NOTE On a much sadder note, I would like to give a special thanks to everyone of our brothers, who attended the service for Kathy Wreschinsky, wife of our brother Mark Wreschinsky. Kathy died after a long battle with cancer, please remember Mark in your prayers. A special thanks to our bartenders, who served at the reception for Kathy Wreschinsky. The bartending crew for this reception was headed by John Giltner and included Tom Drzewiecki, Bill Uberti and Bryan Dolejs,. Thank you again to all involved!
Page 4 Grand Knight s Corner by Grand Knight Bob Ippolito (continued) A Day at the Races On Saturday August 29th, Knights and their family members participated in the Council s annual outing called a Day at the Races at Del Mar Racetrack. The group of brothers this year was smaller than previous years but everyone enjoyed themselves! It was a great time enjoyed by all on a warm day, even if no one became instantly rich by winning bets at the track. DD Bill Uberti, John Giltner, Linda Giltner, Kathleen Uberti, Irene Caruso, and Guy Caruso enjoying the races Finally This coming month the pace picks up starting with our first Membership Drive on Sept 10th-11th and Corporation Mass and Breakfast on Sept 20th.
Page 5 A Message from Program Director Deputy Grand Knight Phil Sibayan Brothers of this Great Fraternal Council, I would like to say that August gave us quite the respite. We will be picking up the "pace" in September. Inside this newsletter you will find our upcoming "Schedule of Events" and I implore each Brother to find an opportunity to volunteer some time to those events. If you will be attending the Membership Drives, please share your experiences with our Prospective Brothers so that they may be as excited as we were when we first joined; this would be a great segway into the Corporate Mass & Breakfast for the following weekend! How great would it be to break bread with a new Brother at church followed by a time to sit with that new Brother at breakfast?! The Lord works through our Council Officers in mysterious ways! I look forward to seeing more Brothers at our meetings and events as it encourages unity within our council. I am grateful for all the Brothers that I have met thus far and am excited to meet more! Vivat Jesus! Phil A Minute with the Membership Chairman This is why I am proud to be a Knight. Members and many of their wives attending the funeral of Kathy Wreschinsky were a great comfort to the family. Those in attendance were. Father John Dolan, Father Lauro Minimo (Both Celebrated the Mass, along with two visiting Priests). Also, attending were brother Knights at the Mass and reception: Guy Caruso, Dan Chadkewicz, Paul Decker, Michael Dunlap, Bob Ippolito, Bruce Koepke, Hugh Largey, Ed McCabe, Roland Morales, Bob Ramsey, John Simon, Bob Sweig, and Paul Zadrozny. Also our Supreme Insurance Field Agent, Joe Mahoney was present for the Mass and reception. In addition, Terrie Norris, wife of District Warden Pat Norris, made the trip from Riverside to attend (Pat could not get off work we understand). Thanks to the refreshment team of Bryan Dolejs, Tom Drzewiecki, and Bill Uberti. We will be holding a membership drive after all Masses of Saturday September 12 and Sunday September 13. I will cover all Sunday Masses, but I need someone to set up the table for both evening Masses. Please spend 10 minutes at the table after the Mass you usually attend. The material will be in the flower room. I realize it is a little warm, but it is always a draw to have a Fourth Degree Knight in Colors. If you are available, please let me know. Also, our District Deputy, Bill Uberti, is forming a new Second Degree Team; if you are interested, there are speaking roles and non-speaking roles. The council needs backups for our First Degree team. Some speaking roles are small. Contact Bill if you are interested. Remember Every Knight a Recruiter. John Giltner, PGK, PCP, FDD Membership Chairman
Page 6 A Message from Field Agent Joe Mahoney Many Knights really got hurt when they bought into the Buy Term insurance and invest the rest. Dave Ramsey, the author of this strategy, has gone bankrupt a few times plus he owns whole life insurance. ( do as I say, not what I do!) Below is an article from Investment News. "New Life Insurance Study Debunks 'Buy Term, Invest the Difference'" The rallying cry of the financial advice industry has been for clients to buy inexpensive term life insurance rather than more expensive whole life insurance and invest the premium savings on their own. The only problem is most clients never execute the second part of the equation, leaving many of them uninsured in later life and unprepared for retirement. People don't buy term and invest the difference, said David Babbel, professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and coauthor of Buy Term and Invest the Difference Revisited, published in the May 2015 issue of Journal of Financial Service Professionals. They most likely rent the term, lapse it and spend the difference, he said. And even the minority of those who do invest the difference are prone to the real-world emotional investing when individuals investors tend to buy high and sell low, perennially underperforming market indices, he added. Typical economic analyses that compare the cost of buying term and whole life policies fail to properly assess the guaranteed cash value growth component of permanent life insurance, Babbel said. He noted that cash value guarantees always grow, while a more volatile portfolio of stocks and bonds can rise and fall with the market. 1. The vast majority did not invest the money that they should have years later, these same families still need life insurance coverage, but the cost for insurance was substantially more expensive because everyone is 10 years older. 3. What ever amount of money a family has saved is Tax Deferred money, remember you have to pay income taxes with every withdrawal. Example 1) $ withdrawn from your 401K, the estimated minimum tax burden will be at least 25%. This means, your withdrawal is $75.00 Example 2) $ is taken out of your cash value life insurance to supplement your retirement. Amount of taxes paid = 0 %. Net withdrawal, $ plus you still have life insurance coverage.
