So far we have 30 Preps enrolled but I know there are a number of families who are yet to enrol their preschool children. This is a plea for you to please do so as soon as possible as I need to plan for staffing. Enrolment forms are available at the office or on the school website at If you know of new families who are intending to enrol their child but have not yet done so, please remind them to do so. Essential Education Items Recently statements were sent to families alerting you to outstanding payments. A number of families are yet to make any payment towards Essential Education Items. This is not a voluntary contribution and parents are expected to pay. If you are experiencing financial difficulties, I am more than happy to work with you to develop a payment plan. If you are one of the 13 families who are yet to respond, tomorrow is the very last day. Don t miss the opportunity to have your say. 6th August 2015 Dear Parents/Guardians, We are always looking for better ways of communicating with our School Community. One form of communication we would like to use more effectively is . This is a more sustainable practice and would greatly reduce paper, printing and postage costs. Many families have already supplied the school with an address via their enrolment form, however there are still many who have not. If you haven t already provided an address to the school, we would like to request you do so by ing the school at chelsea.ps@edumail.vic.gov.au. This makes the app even more accessible then before to your parent and student community, with the ability to receive messages directly to a PC, Laptop, or Surface Tablet running Windows 8.1 or 10. To install Skoolbag on your Windows device, look up "Skoolbag" in the Windows Store, and install it. Once installed you can find your school, and pin it to your Windows Home Screen. 3 EXCITING EVENTS COMING SOON! The month of August brings some exciting events at Chelsea Primary! Our school inquiry focus of Social Justice is highlighted in many of these events. Our five cent coin collection reflects the generosity of our school community. Many classes have already filled their bottles! Our Environmental Warriors Help Us Grow day this Friday, will help raise funds to beautify our gardens and see our green fingered students prepare garden beds and plant a range of greenery. Dress up in clothes that represent what you want to be when you grow up, or you may wear green clothes. August 19 th is set aside to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis. We thank everyone for their support for these very important events. HAPPY CAMPING YEAR 5 and 6! We wish all our year 5/6 students, teachers and helpers a fabulous time at Phillip Island Adventure Resort next week. The camping program is always a highlight of the school year. It promotes friendship, teamwork, builds resilience, independence and promotes an appreciation of the natural environment. We look forward to hearing about our students experiences on their return. FROM THE STUDENT WELLBEING TEAM Learning to Value Others Another great Kids Matter article which highlights developing consideration of others views and empathy. INDIGENOUS LITERACY Join the Great Book Swap Challenge! The Great Book Swap Challenge is a fundraising event for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation in which students swap books with one another. Participating students can bring along a gold coin donation and one of their books they have enjoyed but are ready to donate to the Book Swap. During Book Week on Wednesday August 26 at lunchtime students may come to the MPR, donate their gold coin and book, and choose a new book to take home from the selection of donated books. The money raised goes to literacy support and books for Indigenous Australians living in remote communities. This is another great opportunity to support literacy in our own students and in the wider community. SICK CHILDREN A number of children are still coming to school when they are unwell. We have had many children affected by current coughs, colds and fevers. This is easily spread throughout the school, so we are asking parents not to send children to school if they have not fully recovered. We appreciate your support. Jan Smith Assistant Principal

6 Chelsea Primary School is using Qkr for all school payments Qkr! by MasterCard can be downloaded for free from Apple s app store for iphones (ipads should download the iphone app) or from Google Play for Android phones and tablets. After downloading the app and registering, simply scan the QR code on the left using the Qkr! Code scanner or type CHELSEAPS after tapping the magnifying glass in the top right of the home screen of Qkr!, and then the app will always recognise you as part of Chelsea in future to make payments even easier. Qkr is our preferred method for all school payments. All feedback to the school office is very welcome. Victorian Premier s Reading Challenge Congratulations to the 79 students who have completed the reading challenge already! The reading challenge has not finished yet and students are encouraged to continue. There are only 5 weeks left with the challenge due to finish on September 14 th. Please note that no books can be added to your child s reading list beyond this date. Just a reminder of the RULES for school and student challengers: 1. You must register all challenge and choice books you have read online. If you are in Prep, Year 1 or Year 2 you can read books by yourself or with someone else, for example, a parent, teacher, brother or sister, classmate, buddy or friend. They can help you or read the book to you if you are just learning to read. 2. Your online books must be verified as read by a Coordinator in your school. 7 MEDIA LEADERS Cystic Fibrosis Day at Chelsea P.S. What is cystic fibrosis? Cystic Fibrosis (CF) primarily affects the lungs and digestive system because of a malfunction in the exocrine system, responsible for producing saliva, sweat, tears and mucus. There is currently no cure. People with CF develop an abnormal amount of excessively thick and sticky mucus within the lungs, airways and the digestive system. The mucus causes impairment of the digestive functions of the pancreas and traps bacteria in the lungs resulting in recurrent infections which lead to irreversible damage. Lung failure is the major cause of death for someone with CF. From birth, a person with CF undergoes constant medical treatments and physiotherapy. To raise money to support research into a cure for Cystic Fibrosis, JSC will be selling raspberry licorice straps at lunch time on the 19th August, for 50 cents each.

8 Message from Margaret Crossing supervisor Thank you for all the Birthday wishes on Tuesday. Help Us Grow! On Friday 7th August we are having a Help Us Grow! dress up day. The theme is: What do you want to be when you grow up? Or, you can dress in the colour green Please bring a gold coin donation and enjoy dressing up! Our enthusiastic Environmental Warriors are helping to organise a special day to raise funds for our kitchen garden and to celebrate National Tree Day. The Kingston Council has very kindly given us 40 young trees and shrubs to plant around the school grounds. On Friday 7th August each class will be given a share of these to plant in their own special place around the school. Parents who would like to help on the day or have native plants they wish to donate would be most welcome; please speak to your classroom teacher. We are looking forward to taking care of these plants and watching them grow. Kind regards,

9 SUBWAY LUNCHES Envelopes are distributed every Thursday for the following week s lunch orders and can also be collected from the office at other times. Orders must be returned to the office s silver money box no later than Wednesday morning. Please ensure that your child s name, class and selections are clearly printed on the envelopes. Please insert the correct amount of cash and seal the envelope. No change will be given. If the order is not legible or the money is incorrect, your child will miss out on lunch.
