READING COMPREHENSION SLOW MOVEMENT The Slow Movement advocates a cultural change toward slowing down life's pace. It began with the protest against the opening of a McDonald's restaurant in Rome in Over time, this developed into movements in other areas, such as Cittaslow (Slow Cities), Slow Living, Slow Travel, Slow Parenting, Slow Food and some others. Slow parenting, for example, encourages parents to plan less for their children, allowing them to enjoy their childhood and explore the world at their own pace. The opposing view is that such children are disadvantaged because their parents do not provide as many learning opportunities. Cittaslow (literally Slow City) is a movement founded in Italy in October The inspiration of Cittaslow was the Slow Food organization. Cittaslow's goals include improving the quality of life in towns by slowing down its overall pace, especially in a city's use of spaces and the flow of life and traffic through them. Cittaslow has expanded broadly beyond Italy. By 2006, national Cittaslow networks existed in Germany, Norway and the United Kingdom. By mid-2009, fourteen countries had at least one officially accredited Cittaslow community. Cittaslow is a membership organisation. Full membership of Cittaslow is only open to towns with a population under 50,000. An annual membership fee is payable by towns. There are 50 goals and principles that each Cittaslow town commits to work to achieve. NIAGARA FALLS The Niagara Falls, separating upstate New York from the Canadian province of Ontario, are formed by the overflow of Lake Erie into Lake Ontario at the rate of 35,000 cubic litres per second. This phenomenon of nature was first described in 1678 by Father Louis Hennepin, a missionary in the entourage of the French explorer Robert La Salle, as the incredible cataract or cascade, which is without equal. Since then Niagara Falls have become one of the wonders of the world, attracting some 10 million visitors each year. The other is a long elevator ride and walk down beneath Bridal Veil to the Cave of the Winds, where the constant mist is often crossed by rainbows. The Falls are the biggest source of hydroelectric energy in the western hemisphere, feeding the gigantic Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant five miles downstream, from whose observatory, the Power Vista, twice as high as the Falls, one gets a gorgeous view of the panorama. 8
