General description of the course. This is a course in international business. The basic content of the course includes (1) an overview of the means of conducting international business, with an emphasis on what makes international different from domestic; (2) the effects of the social systems within countries on the conduct of international business; (3) the major theories explaining international business transactions and the institutions influencing those activities; (4) the financial exchange systems and institutions that measure and facilitate international transactions; (5) the dynamic interface between countries and companies attempting to conduct foreign business activities; (6) corporate strategy alternatives for global operations; and (7) international activities that fall largely within functional disciplines. 2. Examine the various cultural, political and legal issues that impact international business activity; 3. Examine the international institutions and practices that impact international business; 4. Understand trade and investment theory, foreign exchange and the determination of foreign exchange rates; 5. Appreciate the interaction of business and government as they relate to international commerce; 6. Reading of The Wall Street Journal and the Financial Times on a regular basis will be especially helpful in dealing with issues of current interest to this class. Cases at the end of each part of the textbook will be assigned to case teams for write-up and presentation in class 8. Lecturer (Short CV) Matt Heckman has been teaching European law and European economic integration for 23 years at various universities inside the Netherlands, including the University of Maastricht. He was Director of International Affairs for 14 years at a Dutch University and is currently teaching at various graduate programs (both MBA and MA) in the Netherlands, Finland (Satakunta University), Malaysia (UPM) and the USA (Tennessee Tech University). Presently he is the academic coordinator of a MBA-programme, the IHM-master and principal lecturer graduate programmes. He was external examiner at DIT Dublin for four years and still acts as a consultant to both public and private companies. Matt is also a founding member of the research center on innovative entrepreneurship and risk management of Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, and an active member of the research institute Institute for Globalization and International Regulation of the University of Maastricht (IGIR). He studied at the University of Maastricht, the University of Lancaster and the Vrije Universiteit Brussels. He holds a bachelor degree and a master degree in International and European Law and gained working experience working for the Commission of the EU. His main research interests are in the field of intellectual property law and competition policy. 11. Literature.
