2 MODULE: INTERNATIONAL HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT AREA: INTERNATIONAL STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT SUBJECT: INTERNATIONAL STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT CODE: M032.IE LANGUAGE: ENGLISH YEAR: 1 PERIOD: SEMESTER 2 CREDITS: 5 ECTS 1. Subject objectives 1. Understand the different challenges business face when they operate in an international environment. 2. Examine the various cultural, political and legal issues that impact international business activity. 3. Examine the international institutions and practices that impact international business. 4. Understand trade and investment theory, foreign exchange and the determination of foreign exchange rates. 5. Appreciate the interaction of business and government as they relate to international commerce. 6. Develop insight into the management implications of international business strategy and operations. 2. Competencies developed Basic B06 - Have demonstrated knowledge and understanding that is original in developing and/or applying ideas often within a research context B07 - Can apply their knowledge and understanding, and problem solving abilities in new or unfamiliar environments within broader (or multidisciplinary) contexts related to their field of study B08 - Have the ability to integrate knowledge and handle complexity, and formulate judgments with incomplete or limited information, but that include reflecting on social and ethical responsibilities linked to the application of their knowledge and judgments B09 - Can communicate their conclusions, and the knowledge and rationale underpinning these, to specialist and non-specialist audiences clearly and unambiguously B10 - Have the learning skills to allow them to continue to study in a manner that may be largely selfdirected or autonomous General G01 - Be able to find and manage information 1

Session 3: - Regional Economic Integration - Be able to explain the different levels of regional economic integration. - Understand the economic and political arguments for regional economic integration. - Understand the economic and political arguments against regional economic integration. - Be familiar with the history, current scope, and future prospects of the world?s most important regional economic agreements. - Understand the implications for business that are inherent in regional economic integrations agreements.. Session 4: The Strategy of International Business - Explain the concept of strategy. - Understand how firms can profit from expanding globally. - Understand how pressures for cost reductions and pressures for local responsiveness influence strategic choice. - Be familiar with different strategies for competing globally and their pros and cons.. Session 5: Entry Modes - Explain the choice between market pioneer and fast follower - Explain the international market entry methods. - Identify two forms of piracy and discuss their help and harm to firms doing international business - Discuss the channel members available to companies that export indirectly or directly or manufacture overseas. 4.
