Customer issues Data center network is becoming business critical Datacenters must be up 24x7 More throughput driven by server virtualization and horizontal traffic Maintenance window is shrinking Complexity is increasing 12
Today's network design challenge : Spanning Tree Core/Distribution Access Active/Passive Configuration effort Operational Complexity Active link Blocked/standby link Convergence time User user/app experience STP stops loops, but blocks paths - reducing effective bandwidth Configuration Intensive (switch by switch) Operational complexity can often impact business applications and users Slow convergence during failure 13
How IRF meets this challenge From physical topology to logical topology Core/Distribution Access Active/Active Legend Configuration effort IRF Platform Virtualization Operational Complexity logical view in Active link Network management tool Blocked/standby link Convergence time User user/app experience Scalable Server Bandwidth All links are active. 14
Horizontal Stacking with IRF Technology No single point of failure for your servers connectivity IRF Aggregation Static/Dynamic (802.3ad) IRF 15 IRF links = 40 Gbps * 2 = 160 Gbps FD
IRF benefits Dramatically Simplifies network operations Deliver high levels Performance Ensures network/business Resiliency 16
We need the high availability and redundancy that IRF provides to support our 24x7 network demands. In addition, we plan to eventually create a second data center in the former AOL building to offer even greater flexibility, redundancy and resiliency. IRF allows multiple switches to be interconnected and act as one big virtual switch with very low latency. That IRF capability will enable us to disperse servers and switches without a performance penalty. Steve Lyon, assistant director for network engineering, University of North Florida
Conclusion Simplicity Performance Resiliency HP s IRF switch virtualization technology is increasing availability of the infrastructure HP s IRF is increasing the performance within layers and between layers HP s IRF avoids to rely on maintenance windows for upgrades HP s IRF is simplifying the network 18
