1 High efficient retrofit of large buildings in the Energy region Weiz-Gleisdorf Energy in Minds! is a project supported by the European Commission
2 High quality retrofit of buildings within the frame of Kaltenegger Content 3 Initiative of refurbishment 4 District commission Weiz 6 Old people s home Weiz 8 Secondary Modern School St. Ruprecht/Raab 10 Secondary Modern School Weiz 12 Elementary School Gutenberg 14 Elementary School Peesen Intention Within the frame of the European subsidiary program CONCERTO four European cities have shown that it is possible to reduce the share of fossil fuels and the CO 2 emission by 20% to 30% within a period of 5 years. In order to achieve this goal a variety of different CONCER- TO measurements were introduced to consistently reduce the energy demand in combination with an increased application of renewable energies.
3 ökosan ENERGIEREGION OSTSTEIERMARK Energy in Minds! Energy in Minds! is a project of the CONCERTO initiative, supported by the European Commission in the course of the 6 th framework program. Active communities Four active communities or regions, namely Falkenberg (Sweden), Neckarsulm (Germany), Zlin (Czech republic) and Weiz-Gleisdorf (Austria) actively took part in the project and Gornji Grad (Slovenia) and the Region Turin (Italy) were involved as observer cities. In the course of the last five years Trier (G), Wieselburg (AUT), Värnamo (S) and the regions Val Pellice and the Provincia di Biella (ITA) joined in as Observers. Working plan There are different possible ways to reduce energy. Only the combination of single measurements and the active part of the citizen and the community can successfully implement these goals. The activities within the frame of Energy in Minds! were divided into 6 main categories, as shown on the next diagram. Infrastructure energy Energy carrier Know-how transfer Energy awareness Energyoptimized cities Energy efficiency Regenerative energy Energy savings The first step to energy saving is to learn about energy consumption In order to identify buildings with a high potential of energy reduction, several thousand energy checks were arranged. This implemented numerous successful retrofits of detached houses and semi-detached houses in the region Weiz-Gleisdorf. The energy consumption was reduced by 50% in average. In the following we would like to introduce some flagship projects that should motivate other cities to follow this approach of Energy in Minds! for the sake of their residents.

Averaged U-values of 0,1 W/m 2 K of the building envelope should be gained by an innovative façade construction with integrated solar cells. Values of 0,5 W/m 2 K are achieved by the implementation of new windows with insulated windows frames and triple glazing. The challenge of the refurbishment will be the hermetic envelope in order to guarantee the efficiency of the central air condition system with heat recovery. National and international guests are deeply impressed by the excellent combination of balcony envelopes that are to eliminate balcony-heat bridges and a vivid and colourful façade that covers the thermal insulation. Retrofit plan by Architect DI Peter Lidl Perspective south-west Lidl Beside other thermal improvements the community had the courage to remove all soil floors and to install an excellently insulated floor, and to replace the old PVS floor with a lino floor as an ecological component of retrofit. In 2003 the community consequently started to change to renewable energy with an access to the district heating of St. Ruprecht (wood chips from the region). This process should be proceeded with the construction of a photovoltaic plant by the district heating St. Ruprecht. A special feature of the retrofit is the monument protection as the building was awarded a national price for architecture 1969 and which must be taken in consideration in all planning. As far as permitted by monument protection the gym hall and the schoolyard should get the same high-level thermal insulation. 13 Year of construction 1910 Building owner Community of Gutenberg Retrofit plan by archimut architects, Architect Peter Mutewsky before retrofit The school building Gutenberg was insulated and retrofitted utilizing the special quality of the heavy building construction and considering the historically significant structure of the building. This also includes a thermal insulation of the existing casement window with air-proof connection. Additional measurements such as the installation of outside blinds in order to avoid overheating during summer or the adaptation of day-light-regulated illumination for the class rooms increased the comfort for the users of the school and Kindergarten. 15 Year of construction around 1890 Building owner Community of Thannhausen Retrofit action by Franz Hausleitner during refurbishment Parts of the main building were refurbished with a thermal insulation and the old oil heating was replaced by a wood chip boiler with a contracting system. Especially at the beginning the heating unit showed high consumption figures, but thanks to a dedicated heating expert on the spot remarkable reduction potentials could be achieved - an excellent example for the major importance of a responsible person who is in charge of the economical and efficient operation of a heating system.
