2 Liberec Region Basic information The Liberec region is situated in the north of the Czech Basin and spreads over the eastern part of the Lužické hory and Jizerské mountain ranges, and the western Krkonoše range with the Krkonoše foothills. The northern border of the region also forms a 20-kilometre long international border with Germany and a 130-kilometre long border with Poland. The largest cities in the region are Liberec, Jablonec nad Nisou and Česká Lípa. The Liberec region is mainly industrial. Among the most developed industries are glass, costume jewellery, engineering, and plastics production and processing, together with manufacturing closely related to automobile production. Many industries have foreign capital. The main products of agriculture, which has only a supplemental role, are cereals and fodder crops in connection with cattle breeding. The Technical University of Liberec offers degrees in mechanical engineering, architecture, economics, education, machinery and textiles. The region is also home to the College of Pedagogy.

4 Transportation The Liberec region is well connected to the rest of the country via a fairly comprehensive road network. The four-lane R10 and I/35 divided highways link Liberec to Mladá Boleslav and Prague. The northbound section of the I/35 connects Liberec to the German border and the planned upgrade of the southeast section leads to Hradec Králové.
