2 Moravia - Silesia Region Basic information The Moravia-Silesia region is situated in the northeastern part of the Czech Republic. It neighbours Poland in the northeast and Slovakia in the southeast. The city of Ostrava is the administrative, economic and cultural centre of the region. The largest cities in the Moravia-Silesia region are Ostrava, Opava, Frýdek-Místek, Karviná, Nový Jičín and Bruntál. General information Regional capital Ostrava Area (in km 2 ) Total population* Moravia-Silesia districts: Bruntál Frýdek-Místek Karviná Nový Jičín Opava Ostrava - město Population density (per km 2 )* 225 The north of the Moravia-Silesia region became the country s most important industrial centre during the last century and it still holds this position. The centre of this industrial area is the agglomeration called Ostravsko- Karvinská. The expansion of industrial development of this area is connected to the utilization of the area s mineral wealth and to the development of rail transportation. Nowadays this industrial area is being restructured with the aim of extending industrial activities and revitalizing all kinds of services. Other important sectors include chemicals and pharmaceuticals, electrical engineering, textiles industries, paper production and food processing. *in January September 2006

The region features international transport routes formed by the E 75 and E 462 highways running south to north and the E 11 from west to east, as well as the 2 nd International Railway Corridor. Multi-Modal European Transport Corridor Branch B runs through the centre of the area and, thanks to exceptionally favourable geographical conditions, determines the transport development of the region. All bigger towns in the region (those with more than 10 thousand people, with the exception of Studénka) are connected via first-class roads.
