Contact hours: 30 hours There are the following requirements for passing the course: 1. Participation in classes, including engagement in discussions (prerequisite of the final mark). Students are expected to participate in classes. Absence at more than six classes results in a failure of the course that may be made up by re-taking the course next year. One or two classes may be missed without making them up. Students missing between three and six classes will have to make them up by writing and submitting to the MA programme office a
3 paper of at least 18,000 characters (including spaces) per each class missed. The topics of the make-up papers will be assigned by the course tutor. The make-up papers submitted by the examination day will count toward the first term mark for the course. Those submitted later but not later than the last day of the winter re-sit examination period will count toward the second term mark. 2. Between two and four in-class presentations (each worth 10 per cent of the final mark). Students will choose topics of their presentations in consultation with the course tutor after sessions 1 and 2. The final number of presentations of a student will depend upon the number of course participants. The presentation topics and their dates are given under the seminar titles in the description of the detailed structure of the course available to course participants or from the office. Students and the tutor may also suggest other presentation topics during the course. The presentations should be supported by PowerPoint or other slides. Single sheet summaries must be handed out to fellow students and the course tutor prior to presentation. The presentation may be fully or partly pre-written at home but should be presented, not read in class. The maximum time allowed per presentation is usually minutes, depending on the schedule. The presentation must account for the facts related to its topic and must include discussion questions. It has to contain the list of the sources used. The assessment of a presentation will concern: the coverage of facts, discussion questions, source list, use of the time allowed, and the style. If a student misses his/her presentation, he/she must forward its electronic version and handouts to fellow students and the course tutor by the day of the last class the latest for the presentation to be counted toward the first term mark for the course. Presentations forwarded later (but no later than the last day of the winter re-sit examination period) will be counted toward the second term mark for the course. If a presentation is marked negatively, the student concerned must write a make-up paper on the same topic and submit it to the MA programme office by the last day of the winter re-sit examination period for the presentation to be counted toward the second term mark for the course. 3. An essay review of a book, chapter or paper on the theories of European integration (10 per cent of the final mark). The essay review should discuss and critically assess the argument of the book, chapter or paper other than the ones used for student s presentations. Students may choose for review any work from the readings for the course (listed in the description of the detailed structure of the course). They may also choose other works if accepted by the course tutor. The length of the essay review must be 12,600-18,000 characters, including spaces (i.e. standard 7-10 pages). The essay review must be submitted in a hard copy to the MA Programme office by date to be determined, 17:00 the latest for it to be counted toward the first term mark for the course. Students who will miss the submission deadline will have their essay reviews counted toward the second term mark for their course provided that they submit the essay reviews by the last day of the winter re-sit examination period. Students who receive a negative mark for their review will have to make it up by re-writing and re-submitting their work by the last day of the winter re-sit examination period if they wish it to be counted toward the second term of their course mark. The assessment of a review will concern: the coverage of the argument of the book or paper, the quality of critical assessment, and the language and style. 4. A written examination constitutes (50-70 per cent of the final mark, depending on the number of presentations). The examination will consist of open-ended one-paragraph-answer questions. The questions will concern the topics discussed during the lectures and the key literature assigned to the seminars. If the examination is failed, a student has a right of a re-sit examination which will be convened no sooner than after two weeks upon the first examination (but no later than on the last day of the winter re-sit examination period).
4 In order to receive a positive mark for the course, all its component marks must be positive. A positive mark is awarded if more than 50 per cent of requirements are fulfilled.
