1 Programme Curriculum for Master of Science in Management 1. Identification Name of programme Master of Science in Management Scope of programme 60 ECTS Level Master level Programme code EAGMA Decision details Board of the School of Economics and Management, Amendment details Programme description As firms and public agencies recruit managers, they often look for dynamic people that have both specialist knowledge and a generalist management competence. The aim of the programme is to prepare the student for a career as a manager in an occupation related to her/his undergraduate specialty. The Master of Science in Management programme aims to broaden the student s specialist knowledge from undergraduate studies in four management dimensions. First, the student will learn about the context of management and questions such as: How can the economy be understood and analyzed? What are the general developments, the new general trends and challenges? The student will, for example, learn about how globalization, digitalization, environmental and ethical concerns affect management. Second, the student will learn about important management functions of private firms and public administrations. What are the key concepts, theories and tools for understanding different areas of management? The student will learn to understand the fundamentals of marketing, organization and strategy, as well as management accounting and finance. Third, the student will learn about managing individuals and groups. How can individual behavior be understood? The students will develop their understanding on their own motivations and behavior as well as others. How can group dynamics be analyzed and influenced? Students learn about how groups and how management styles influence group performance. Fourth, the student will conduct a degree project and develop knowledge on how to relate a management perspective to business challenges in her/his field of undergraduate specialization. This part includes learning about methodological approaches and the writing of an academic thesis. The programme is cross-disciplinary. A substantial part of the programme is based on Strategy, Marketing, Organization, Managerial Accounting and Finance. Other parts contain elements of Economics, Economic History, Business Law, Sociology and Psychology. Teaching is based on a participative learning approach and a rich variety of teaching methods are used, including lectures, 1
