2 Sports Events in Gelderland Province of Gelderland Gelderland is widely known for its splendid nature areas with the Veluwe as its crown jewel. Drifting sand, beautiful forests, extensive heathlands, roaming sheep herds and murmuring streams... It is a beautiful scenery where visitors can enjoy many top attractions, famous museums, historic villages and gourmet restaurants. Feel like sheer royalty in the national museum Paleis het Loo or visit the Kröller-Müller museum with its world-renowned paintings by Vincent van Gogh. Or go out on a bicycle and take in the beautiful nature. With its population of over 2 million, Gelderland is the largest province of the Netherlands. It is located in the centre/east of the Netherlands, bordering on the German Federation State North Rhine-Westphalia. With this unique combination of culture and nature - at only a one-hour drive from Amsterdam - Gelderland has a lot to offer. A range of Gelderland sports events Gelderland is not only known for its nature and culture. It has also made quite a name for itself with the large number of sports events. Through a strong network with many organisations, businesses and sports associations, the Province - in cooperation with local authorities - is an active promoter of sports. The excellent accommodations and the close cooperation with towns both in and outside of the province, make Gelderland an ideal location to organize international sports events. A good example is the start in Gelderland of the 2016 edition of the Giro d Italia, the second largest cycle race in the world. Gelderland is also widely known for the world s biggest walking event: the Nijmegen Four Days Marches, with a very large share of international participants was characterised by the world championships Beach Volleyball. In multiple towns in the Netherlands, including Apeldoorn in Gelderland, the best beach volleyball teams of the globe competed for the coveted title of world champion. Furthermore, the newly-constructed golf course The Dutch in Spijk will host the international KLM Open golf tournament in the coming three years. 3 Gelderland accommodations for major sports events In the past five years, Gelderland has invested millions in upgrading accommodations into high-quality multifunctional sports locations equipped for international sports events. A good example is the unique National Sports Centre Papendal in Arnhem. Sports Centre Papendal has a state-of-the-art multi-sports hall that ranks among the best in Europe both in terms of size and available facilities. Every day, more than 350 top athletes make use of the top sports facilities that Papendal offers to Olympic and Paralympic sports. The Omnisport Stadium in Apeldoorn is another top sports accommodation hosting athletics, tennis, volleyball and cycling events. The Gelredome stadium in Arnhem and the Equestrian Centre in Ermelo are top accommodations as well where international events are organized. Distinctive characteristics of Gelderland Gelderland invests a great deal in sports. It stands out from other provinces by having its own program of sports. The Province has set up a strong network of sports organisations and complementary stakeholders such as businesses, schools, municipalities, etc. The Province actively supports sideevents before, during and after the event. This, to reinforce the economic and social impact on the region and to increase the success of sports events. Gelderland focuses on six sports: athletics/walking, judo, horse riding, tennis, volleybal and cycling.
