4 AIM o It may be the case that you are used to generating 3D models in CAD systems (e.g. Pro-Engineer, AutoCAD, CATIA etc) or you may want to import your client s 3D CAD model for rendering into 3DS MAX. o The aim of this lecture is to precisely guide you on how to prepare CAD models for import into 3DS MAX

5 3DS EXCHANGE COMMANDS o A number of different 3D packages exist, and exchanging files between them is where the importing and exporting commands of 3DS come in handy. o You can find both of these commands under the File menu.

6 IMPORT DIALOG BOX Choose File > Import to open the Import dialog box. This dialog box looks like a typical Windows file dialog box. The real usability comes with the various Import Settings dialog boxes that are available for each format.

7 IMPORTING A CAD MODEL TO 3DS MAX o The settings in the Import Settings dialog box are different for the various format types. MAX can import several different formats, including the following: o 3D Studio Mesh, Projects, and Shapes (*.3DS, *.PRJ, *.SHP) o Adobe Illustrator (*.AI) o LandXML/DEM/DDF (*.DEM, *.XLM, *.DDF) o AutoCAD (*.DWG, *.DXF) o Legacy AutoCAD (*.DWG) o Autodesk (*.FBX, *.DAE) o Motion Analysis (*.HTR)

8 IMPORTING CAD MODEL TO 3DS MAX o Initial Graphics Exchange Standard (*.IGE, *.IGS, *IGES) o Autodesk Inventor (*.IPT, *.IAM) o Lightscape (*.LS, *.VW, *.LP) o Wavefront Material and Object (*.MTL, *.OBJ) o StereoLithography (*.STL) o VRML (*.WRL, *.WRZ) o VIZ Material XML Import (*.XML)

9 IMPORTING CAD MODEL TO 3DS MAX Among the several settings there is the geometry tab that offers possibilities such as:- The Scale option where the user determines the incoming file units. Derive AutoCAD Primitives by option

10 IMPORTING CAD MODEL TO 3DS MAX One can choose one of the following:- 1. Layer, Blocks as Node Hierarchy Linked objects on a given layer in AutoCAD drawings are combined into a single editable object. 2. Layer, Blocks as Node Hierarchy, Split by Material This works the same as Layer, Blocks as Node Hierarchy, however objects are split by the materials previously assigned. 3. Entity, Blocks as Node Hierarchy Every linked object not in a block is represented as a separate editable object.

11 IMPORTING CAD MODEL TO 3DS MAX One can choose one of the following:- 4. Layer Linked objects are combined in 3DS Max according to their layer. Features in each layer are combined as one object. 5. Color Linked objects are combined in 3DS Max according to their color. Features of the same color are combined as one object. 6. Entity Provides one-to-one correspondence between AutoCAD objects and 3DS Max objects. 7. One object All linked objects are combined into a single block.

12 IMPORTING CAD MODEL TO 3DS MAX The new imported model will be derived according the selected option as illustrated below.

13 IMPORTING CAD MODEL TO 3DS MAX o The include option presents a list of parameters which could be either include or eliminated from the.dxf file to 3D Studio MAX. These include External references (xrefs), Hatches, Points, Lights, Views and Cameras and UCSs (grids). o Once all the options are selected appropriately, click OK and the drawing will be automatically displayed in 3D Studio MAX.

14 IMPORTING CAD MODEL TO 3DS MAX o Another common import dialog box offers options to merge the imported objects with the current scene or to completely replace the current scene. o For many different formats, you can also convert units on the imported file. *.IGES *.DXF *.IPT, *.IAM *.STL
