1 For the attention of Headteachers, Literacy and History Subject Leaders and all Key Stages 1 and 2 Teachers Kent in WW1 (Website will be live from 28th March 2014) A history, literacy, film making and cross-curricular project for pupils of all ages Between 1914 and 1918 the county of Kent was the gateway through which personnel, machinery and armaments passed on their way to the Western Front. The influx of men and women, many from overseas and including the Belgian refugees had a profound effect on the residents of towns and villages of coastal Kent, as did the aerial attacks from Zeppelins and aircraft. The Kent in World War 1 project is an opportunity for pupils to research and tell the stories of the people from Coastal Kent, both those involved in the forces and civilians. Using the interactive website, pupils will be able to discover where people lived, what they looked like, which school they attended and how everyday lives were changed by the dramatic events of the First World War. Offer to Kent & Medway Schools The Kent WW1 project runs from April to December During this period schools will be able to book Kent in WW1 staff to lead any assembly or workshops listed below. Please be aware that these sessions (which are free) are offered on a first come, first served basis so book early to avoid disappointment. Please note: All pupils in Coastal Kent undertaking project work will have the opportunity to publish their work on the Kent in WW1 website and help grow interpretations and knowledge of the First World War in Kent. Page 1 of 5
2 1. Assembly: What happened in Kent during World War I? Key Stages 1, 2, 3 and 4 Duration: minutes An assembly for a class or the whole school Combining multimedia, sound and images this assembly will reveal how the First World War impacted on the lives of local men and women. 2. Workshop: World War 1 Cartoon Workshop Numbers: limited to 24 per session This is an opportunity for your pupils to work with Dave Chisholm, the Kent WW1 project artist. To support the project we have developed two fictitious characters Rose and Joe and their immediate family. The young couple are separated at the start of the war when Joe enlists in the army. Rose later joins the VAD to become a Nurse. Pupils can follow their relationship and the stories of their families at the Kent in World War 1 website. This will be achieved through Rose s diary, Joe s journal extracts and the postcards they exchange throughout the First World War, allowing students to gain a picture of life for civilians and those who served. We hope, by using the stories of Rose and Joe s extended families, pupils will be encouraged to research and write about service life and the many civilian roles undertaken during this period. To help your pupils then write their own diary extracts and postcards, Dave will explore in this workshop how cartoons can be used as a vehicle to promote writing and help pupils develop their historical understanding. Schools intererested in pursuing this line of enquiry might also like to introduce their pupils to the work of Bruce Bairnsfather and other prominent British humorists and cartoonists of the period. 3. Workshop: Read all about it! - How the First World War was reported in newspapers? Examine a newspaper, photographs and advertisements from the period. Use the information you have gathered to write a short newspaper article about an event that took place locally or nationally. Page 2 of 5
3 Alternatively design your own advertisement to promote a well known product (either historic or present day) and raise money for the war effort. Discuss how present day attitudes have changed to such things as smoking, which was actively promoted during the First World War. 4. Workshop: Local history and postcards A short presentation discussing some of the events which occurred during the First World War and the people who lived near the schools locality. An investigation of actual postcards written by the men and women of the First World War; students will be able to handle authentic WW1 postcards and will have access to an artefact box. Using the information provided decide on how to investigate your locality to discover more about the people and events of the First World War, this could include making a photographic collage of how places looked then and how they look now. Use the postcard resources and activity sheets, which are available from the Kent in WW1 website, to write postcards using the language of the times or to write texts/facebook messages to convey the same information for the present day. Take on the role of Rose or Joe and write postcards to a family member. 5. Workshop: Make a short First World War film For pupils aged 14 and upwards Duration: 3 hours Numbers: limited to 15 per session Discover how to make a short film in this film making workshop: Prepare for this session by gathering together any photographs from students of their relatives who lived in Coastal Kent during the First World War. Ideas for the Film format can include o A documentary style presentation using photographs and talking heads. o The reinterpretation of a First World War poem in dance or music. o The exploration of local places where events happened or people lived. o Take the part of Rose or Joe and depict a scene from their life. Page 3 of 5
4 This is a practical hands-on session. All equipment will be provided. During the session pupils will be shown how to plan a story board and how to film events, add sounds and edit their work using the Uscreen website. This will give pupils an opportunity to develop film making techniques which they can continue to use for other projects. Further information Kent in WW1 is a Heritage Lottery funded project and is a member of the centenary partnership with the Imperial War Museum. The project aims to tell the story of the people and towns of Kent during World War 1 by providing site visitors with the opportunity to see, via individual town maps, where people lived and events that happened. The website gives the opportunity for individuals to share their family history with those who live in their town and the wider Kent community, painting a picture of Kent during the First World War. By using film as well as audio, stories, photos and artefact images as well as weaving in other footage, we help to illustrate individual and local stories which will inspire an interest in the heritage of Kent during the First World War. A full programme of live events will enable people to come and talk to the Kent in WW1 team (including volunteers and partners) or contribute a family memory to the site and participate in a range of informative and interesting activities. The Kent in WW1 education package for schools includes downloadable workshop packages found on the Learning Resources tab in the Discovery section. The education packages give suggestions for activities and indicate the appropriate Key Stages.
