Updating Your Router s Firmware

1 The following has been created as a reference guide to assist you with the installation of the Netgear Live Parental Controls. Powered by OpenDNS, Live Parental Controls allow you to protect your family from unsuitable Internet content. There is no substitute for supervised access to the Internet but this is not always possible. Netgear Live Parental Controls give you the peace of mind that there are easy to use solutions to help protect your loved ones. Detailed support information can be found at: Updating Your Router s Firmware It is recommended that you update your router s firmware before commencing this procedure. To do this open your Internet Browser and navigate to You will need to enter your router s Username and Password to gain access, by default these are: Username: username Password: password Once you are logged in your router should perform a Firmware Version Check automatically. If it does not then click the Router Upgrade link in the menu on the left hand side of the page.

2 From the Router Upgrade page put a tick in the box Check for New Version Upon Log-in and then click the Check button. This will locate and download the most up-to-date Firmware if your router is not already running this. Installing Netgear Live Parental Controls Insert the Netgear Resource CD to your computer s disc drive. You may see AutoPlay window if so, click Run autorun.exe

3 When the Netgear Welcome window opens click Live Parental Controls You may see an Internet Explorer security warning regarding Active Content, we need to run this to configure Parental Controls so click Yes. For added security untick the box Don t show this message again so you will be warned if another CD requires this. You will now see the option to install the Parental Controls, you can also take this opportunity to read through the Netgear information on this screen if you wish. When you are ready click Install Now You may see a security warning regarding the file ParentalControlsSetup.exe. We need to run this file to install the program so click Run

4 You may see another security warning asking if you want to run the software, click run If you are running a Windows computer you may have another security warning asking if you want to allow Netgear Parental Controls to make changes to the computer. Click Yes. You will now see the Welcome screen of the Parental Controls set up wizard. Click Install The program will now install and you will see a window advising that the program has been installed. With the Setup NETGEAR Live Parental Controls box ticked, click Finish

5 Next you may see a notice advising there is an update to the program available from OpenDNS this is safe to so as OpenDNS manages the Parental Controls program. Click Yes. It is recommended to install the latest version. lf you choose not to, or there are no updates available please skip forward two steps. (Applicable only if updating the program) Save the Install file NETGEAR Management Utility. (Applicable only if updating the program) - Next, browse to the location of the file you have just downloaded and run it. You will then go through a similar installation as detailed from the initial installation earlier in this document Parental Controls will need to check your router s Firmware, you will be asked to enter the password you use to manage your router. By default this is password.

6 You are now ready to set up Parental Controls. Click Next. You will now see a Netgear disclaimer. Please read this carefully and then click Next.

7 Next you are asked if you already have an OpenDNS account. For the purposes of this tutorial we will assume you do not, highlight No, I need to create a free OpenDns account and click Next. You will now need to enter the following details: Username Password Confirm Password Confirm Once you have entered the required information click Next

8 You are now asked to enter your router password, by default this is password. Once this has been entered Parental Controls will be installed on your router. You are now asked to choose a Filtering Level for your network; this is the level of security applied to your router. Please choose the level appropriate for your home network. These settings can also be changed and customised later. 22: The setup of your router is now complete.
