1 ECT362 Installing Linux Virtual Machine in KL322 The steps below outline how to install Linux under Windows as a virtual machine. This install uses the Ubuntu distribution of Linux along with the Oracle VirtualBox version virtual machine. This process will not require any special steps such as formatting or partitioning the hard drive. You will need at least 5GB of free space on your hard drive to complete and run this installation process. 1) Install the 32-bit Ubuntu LTS Linux ISO from (694 MB). 2) Download the VirtualBox for Windows hosts from (76.3 MB). 3) Install Virtual Box. 4) Start Virtual Box. 5) Click the New icon as shown in Figure 1. Figure 1: Starting window for VirtualBox 6) The New Virtual Machine Wizard will open. Select Next as shown in Figure 2. 7) Select the Name Ubuntu_1 with the operating system set to Linux and the Version set to Ubuntu as shown in Figure 3. Select the Next option once done. 8) Select to allocate 512 MB of base storage space for the VM as shown in Figure4. Figure 2: New virtual machine wizard window

Select the Next option after each window. b. Note that the hard drive should be set to dynamically expand with a starting size of 8 GB and should be stored to the location ubuntu_1. 4 Figure 9: Summary window for new virtual hard disk 11) A final summary page is displayed for the new VM. Review setting according to those shown in Figure 10, and select the Finish option. Figure 10: Final VM summary screen 12) From the VirtualBox main window, shown in Figure 11, select the new VM named ubuntu_1 and select the Start option. a. 5 Figure 12: VirtualBox first run wizard 13) Select the browse button and select the Ubuntu iso file downloaded, shown in Figure 13, and select the Next option. 14) Select the Finish option on the summary window shown in Figure 14. Figure 13: Selecting install media for Ubuntu install Figure 14: Summary page for first run wizard 15) New VM window will open and the installation process for Ubuntu will begin as shown in Figure ) Follow the captions for Figures 16 through 20, selecting Install to start the Ubuntu installation process. a. Set the username and log in name to ECT_Student with the password ECT_Student. The computer name should be ECT_PC

8 17) Once installation is complete, login by entering your password (ECT_Student) as shown in Figure 21. Figure 21: Login to the Ubuntu VM 18) Select the "Install Guest Additions" option from the "Devices" tab on the top VirtualBox menu a. This will create a CD icon on the Ubuntu desktop labeled VBOXADDITIONS_4.0.2_ ) Now, from the Places toolbar item within Ubuntu select the VBOXADDITIONS_4.0.2_69518 menu item as shown in Figure 22. a. A file browser will open inside Ubuntu. Select the autorun.sh file to run as shown in Figure 23. b. Select the Run In Terminal option on the pop-up window and enter the user password (ECT_Student) to run this application. c. Press the Enter key to exit once the application finishes running as shown in Figure 24. d. Reboot the Ubuntu VM to complete the installation of the VirtualBox additions.
