6 ORIENTATION WEEK FALL 2013 CHECKLIST BEFORE LEAVING FOR POLAND Make sure your passport is valid for the whole duration of your stay and - if you are a non-eu student - arrange a relevant visa in the Polish embassy If you are an EU student, obtain your EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) before arriving in Warsaw or other form of insurance that will cover any medical costs you incur in Poland If you are a non-eu citizen, ensure that potential medical costs are covered by your insurance. Should this prove impossible, arrange any additional insurance you may need in Poland Participate in Orientation Week activities To receive your student ID: UPON YOUR ARRIVAL AT SGH - YOU MUST pay the obligatory fee of 17PLN to the account No.: PL SWIFT Code: PKOPPLPW(WA8). In payment title, please include your Name & Surname - hand in all the required documents: o Payment receipt for student ID o Copy of your national ID or passport (if you didn t upload it in recruitment system) o Copy of your EHIC or any other document proving your entitlement to health insurance throughout the study period at SGH (if you didn t upload it in recruitment system) Pick up your SGH student ID card on 1 st day of Orientation after paying the obligatory fee Make sure you know your personal class schedule and that you are aware of any possible changes to it Buy yourself a 3-month travel card for Warsaw transportation (Zone 1, 50% discount 125,00 zł)

7 TRANSPORT IN POLAND TICKETS AND REGULATIONS Your SGH student ID is also your Warsaw City Travel Card you need to encode the chosen ticket for it to work! As a student you are entitled to 50% fare reduction on public transport in the City of Warsaw including trams, buses, night buses, subway/metro, local trains in Zone 1 area. Warsaw Travel Card logo ticket machine Travel cards can be encoded in kiosks bearing the logo of the Warsaw City Travel Card or in machines available at all subway/metro stations and some bus/tram stops (see left) It is recommended that you purchase a 90-day Zone 1 ticket at 50% discount (125,00 zł). Other cities: Reduced-fare ticket (50%) for ISIC card holders/sgh students in: Kraków Wrocław Poznań Gdańsk

8 3. Polish Railway (PKP) Passengers entitled to 26% fare reduction ( Max 26 tariff) on InterCity, Express and EuroCity trains are all persons under 26 years of age. There is NO STUDENT DISCOUNT on these trains! Please note: - The reduction is not valid on afternoon/evening (2PM-8PM) trains on Fridays! - Ask for Max 26 when buying the ticket Passengers entitled to 50% fare reduction on all other trains are students under 26 years of age with valid Polish student ID card. To check train schedules, go to PKP website: Tickets for TLK, EX and IC trains can be purchased online at The website is available in English. You will be asked to create an account. Use your student ID as your ID provide the album number (nr albumu) as the document number TLK trains are always the cheapest, and EX/IC (Express/InterCity) the most expensive! Warsaw s main central station is WARSZAWA CENTRALNA (also called DWORZEC CENTRALNY, Main Station ), located a 5-minute-walk away from CENTRUM subway/metro station. To get there from SGH, you can take a direct bus (174) or tram (16, 17, 33) and get off at DW. CENTRALNY. 4. Bus Transport One of the most inexpensive ways of traveling around Poland is with The website is available in English. Tickets can be purchased online. No student discounts, though! Departure point for most destinations is the bus terminus by subway station METRO WILANOWSKA. If you choose to travel with other bus companies, try to avoid WARSZAWA ZACHODNIA bus terminus.

9 4. These are your directions, walking time included! Choose the option that is best for you. Szerokiej drogi! How to get around in Warsaw (easy as 1, 2, 3, 4 ) 1. Type in into your browser 2. Make sure your language is set to English (British flag in top right corner) and your city is set to Warszawa! 3. Type away! A: FROM (initial destination) B: TO (final destination) You can use either stop names or addresses. You must use Polish format! (and names, too!) Here are useful pointers: dorm address is Madalińskiego 31 City center is Centrum Main Train station is Dworzec Centralny or Dw. Centralny Chopin Airport is Lotnisko Chopina Useful hint: you can set the schedule for the time of your departure (by default) or arrival at your destination.

11 Wola, Ochota TRAVEL TIP To orient yourself in the city, it is good to know the location of various districts, as their names are used on bus/tram stops to tell you the direction, instead of compass points such as North, South, etc.
