Presenting a Lesson on Whales of the World Using SMART Notebook and Response Overview: This SMART Notebook lesson is an overview of whales found around the world. Included is information on how whales feed and what they eat, and a history of whaling around the world. One page features humpback whale songs and video of a whale feeding near a boat in Valdez, Alaska. The lesson also features a conventional fivequestion review quiz, and a ten-question SMART Response quiz. Grades and Subject Areas: Grades 4-6, Science (Life Science) Objectives: Students will identify and distinguish whales found throughout the world. Students will identify the range of various whales. Students will learn how a whale feeds and what a whale eats. Students will learn about migration routes of various whales. Students will take a SMART Response quiz to assess their knowledge. I Can Statements: I can identify a species of whale by its physical characteristics. I can identify the range of a particular species of whale. I can identify what a particular whale eats and how it feeds. I can explain why a whale is a mammal. I can use a SMART Response clicker to answer questions. Bill Ernst March

Curriculum Connections: Alaska Content Standards: Science C. Concepts of Life Science A student should understand and be able to apply the concepts, models, theories, facts, evidence, systems, and processes of life science. o C2) develop an understanding of the structure, function, behavior, development, life cycles, and diversity of living organisms ISTE Student Standards: 6. Technology Operations and Concepts Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts, systems, and operations. Students: a. understand and use technology systems. b. select and use applications effectively and productively. d. transfer current knowledge to learning of new technologies. ISTE Teacher Standards: 2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified in the NETS S. Teachers: 2a. design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity. 2b. develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own learning, and assessing their own progress. 3. Model Digital-Age Work and Learning Teachers exhibit knowledge, skills, and work processes representative of an innovative professional in a global and digital society. Teachers: 3a. Demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations. Technology Integration: Hardware and Software Needs Needed is a computer with properly functioning SMART Notebook, SMART Board Tools, and SMART Response software. You will also need a SMART Board, an LCD projector, and the proper USB connection cord. One set of SMART Response units is needed. Speakers are recommended. It is best to test your hardware before the lesson is presented to a class. Bill Ernst March

Resources: Handouts or Downloads SMARTbasics.ppt SMARTBoardTutorial.docx ResponseTutorial SMARTResponse.ppt Links to teaching resources Web resources Bill Ernst March

Lesson Plan Prep Time: min Background Knowledge: The teacher should become familiar with the tools located in the tool bar of SMART Board. Important are the Pens, Full Screen, and Eraser tools in the tool bar. The Response tab will be used for a ten-question quiz. The teacher should be able to orient (reorient) the SMART Board if needed. It is recommended the instructor run through the lesson prior to class presentation. The student should have (or gain) experience with the SMART Board interface. Basic skills are needed for writing and erasing using the SMART Board pens and eraser. In using the SMART Response units a teachers must know how to connect the hardware (SMART receiver) to the teacher s laptop. General knowledge on how the Response units operate is useful. Prior to Lesson: Using a KWL* themed discussion, find out what the students know about whales. Then find out what they would like to learn. The final quiz will assess their knowledge. KWL---What do you know? What do you want to learn? What did you learn? If the teacher wants to formally record grades from the Response quiz, a class roster must be entered into the Teacher Tools software that interfaces with the SMART Response software. The supplied tutorial shows how to enter students into a class roster to record individual student performance. By default, the Response quiz will be presented anonymously. If students are not prompted to enter their student number when starting an assessment, the quiz is in anonymous mode. A teacher has the option of administering the quiz anonymously, displaying the results, and reteaching to areas of student weakness. Time Needed for Lesson: minutes. This lesson could be presented in 2 sessions. Bill Ernst March

Directions: Teacher Presentation Directions: Copy the SMART Notebook file called Whales onto your computer. Open your SMART Notebook software and select the Whales Notebook lesson. Start the lesson. Using the Pen Tools, circle words of importance and discuss them. Ask students to come to the board to circle and highlight notable terms and concepts. (At any point in the lesson the teacher can insert a blank page by selecting Insert : Blank Page and adding content or reviewing concepts. Select Don t Save when completing the lesson so these extra pages/changes are not permanently saved.) Proceed through the lesson, discussing the content of each page. Discuss each distribution map to familiarize students with the range of each whale species. When you reach the page named Interactive Whale, ask students to come to the board to activate each of the four audio files of humpback whale songs. Ask a student to activate the video file of a feeding humpback whale in Alaska. Use the five-question quiz as a review before giving the ten-question response quiz. When you reach the Notebook page that is labeled Whale Quiz, stop and prepare to give the Response clicker quiz. Administering the SMART Response Quiz Pass out a Response clicker to each student. Plug the SMART receiver into your computer. Wait for one green light to appear on the receiver. Have students turn on their clickers and select the correct receiver name from the list. Students will then sign in using their student number (minus the s ). Note: If the quiz is being given anonymously, no sign-in is required. Select the orange Response tab on the SMART Notebook page to begin the quiz. Start the quiz. Once the quiz is started, a green dot will appear on the orange Response tab. Now you should see one solid and one blinking green light on the receiver. Each student should see the test numbers appear on their clicker screen. Proceed through the test, one question at a time. Give adequate time for students to answer each question. Remind them to press the Enter button after each answer. The teacher has the ability to see which students have not entered an answer by selecting Who isn t finished? in the progress window. End the assessment. You can now go through each question to see how the class responded. Results can be shown in a pie chart, or as a bar graph. Results can also be printed out in a comprehensive spreadsheet form by selecting Response : Export Results To : Web Page (HTML), found in the top menu bar. Extension/Challenge: Have students complete a Venn diagram using SMART Notebook comparing and contrasting different species of whales. Have students research whales in captivity. Have students research Alaska Native whale hunting in Alaska, Have students research historical whale hunting in Alaska by non-native whaling companies. Have students find additional facts on a species of whale and put that information on a pull tab. Place this pull tab on the Notebook page associated with that whale. Bill Ernst March
