8 visual pollution We can all agree that in the presented cases we can talk about some kind of visual pollution created by advertisement signs. The question is: Can we, and if yes, how can we measure the visual pollution? How can GIS tools help us estimate visual pollution level?

9 Research obejctive of the project The research objective of the project is to estimate the applicability of a spatial model of visibility of advertising billboards for the evaluation of their effect on the quality of urban public space. Integration of LiDAR (ALS) data with data on the spatial dimension of billboards permits to generate a model of visibility of those advertisements and thus the identification of the size of areas under their visual pressure.

10 Study area The research was carried out in Lublin, Poland. It is the biggest city in eastern Poland situated about 130 km off the eastern border of the European Union, where the EU borders Ukraine and Belarus. City area km 2 4 city districts Population Total area 995,3 ha Important academic center (5 universities).

11 Field works The term advertising signs in this analysis refers to advertising billboards as well as smaller forms of advertising found in public space.

17 Visibility analysis Almost 15% of the research area is under direct visual pressure of ads. The greatest intensity of advertising content was 41 visible ads.

18 subjective visual pollution evaluation 12 people with GPS, were asked to register, their subjective evaluation (on a 1 10 scale) of visual pollution of urban public space generated by ads. They were also asked to give marks 7 and higher when they felt the excess of advertising.

19 subjective visual pollution evaluation 857 opinions were acquired, next they were summarized and mean values were asigned to 434 points on the map.

22 Results

23 Results 15% of the research area (144,94 ha) is under direct visual pressure of advertisement signs. The greatest intensity of advertising content was detected in two places where 41 advertisement signs were visible. During sociological polls mark 7 was given in areas where respondents felt visual pollution, if this is correct we can say that 1,5 % of the research area is afected by visuall pollution.
