The squad reached the ECFA National Semi Finals, with various members also tasting international success as part of the England College s team and England Schoolboys Under 18s. Myerscough has excellent links with football clubs across the North West to support the delivery of courses and increase student s employment prospects. Students receive football coaching every day as part of the Myerscough Football Development Centre. This operates just like a football academy; it encompasses academic lessons, coaching sessions, physio/rehabilitation clinics and competitive fixtures. It is supported by qualified tutors and FA/UEFA qualified coaches. 4 BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma/ Diploma Football Studies Footballstudies BTEC Level 2 Diploma Football Studies The new Level 2 Diploma qualification (formerly First Diploma) is an excellent introductory course for students wishing to further their knowledge of Football Studies. It is extremely popular with school leavers and provides practical skills and techniques, combining this with an academic study based around the theories of football. The course is designed to give you a broad understanding of the sport, with a view to progressing to one of our Level 3 Diploma courses, or to start work in the industry. Students undertake three core units, covering fitness testing and training (designing and programming exercise as well as instruction), practical football (skills and techniques, rules and regulations, scoring methods, roles and responsibilities of officials and reviewing performance) and anatomy and physiology (structures and functions of organs and body parts and energy and nervous systems in relation to exercise). Additional specialist modules cover nutrition for football performance, planning and leading activities, psychology and technical skills and tactical awareness. In addition to obtaining the main Level 2 Diploma qualification, students also undertake the NCFE Level 1 Certificate in Exercise Studies and the Sports Leaders UK Level 2 Award in Sports Leadership. The new Level 3 Diploma qualifications (formerly National Award and National Certificate) are popular options for school leavers and young adults. They combine practical-based skills with academic theory and classroom study. The Subsidiary Diploma is a one-year, six-unit, course broadly equivalent to one A Level, whilst the two-year, 12-unit, Diploma is equivalent to two A Levels and is ideal for progression to Higher Education. Students who successfully complete the Subsidiary Diploma can, if they wish, progress directly to the second year of the Diploma. In year one, students will learn how to assess risk in football (health and safety requirements and checks), the principles of anatomy and physiology and the physiology of fitness and fitness testing. Additional units cover fitness training and programming (designing and delivering training routines), football coaching and psychology for football performance. Students who choose the two-year Diploma route can further their interests in the subject during the second year of their programme. Core units include sports nutrition and the technical and tactical skills associated with the game. Students also examine the lifestyles of professional sports performers, focusing on public appearances, media interviews and financial management. Further units cover analysing sports performance, instructing physical activity and exercise (designing, planning and leading an effective training session) and rules, regulations and officiating in football. In addition to obtaining the Level 3 qualification, students undertake the 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Football Coaching and, for those on the two-year Diploma, the NCFE Level 1 Award in Exercise Studies. Successful completion of the Level 3 Diploma will enable students to progress to Higher Education if desired, although students seeking a more academic course should also consider the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Football Studies which contains an additional six units compared to the Diploma. Entry Requirements Students are normally aged 16 or over and have some level of achievement in GCSE or relevant Further Education qualifications and have gained a minimum of grade D in two or more subjects, including English Language. Assessment Practical assessments, coursework and tests. There are no formal examinations. Progression Level 3 Diploma or Extended Diploma in Football Studies. 5 BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma The new Level 3 Extended Diploma qualification (formerly National Diploma) is a popular option for school leavers, young adults and successful Level 2 Diploma students. This two year 18-unit course is equivalent to three A Levels and is designed for students who wish to develop a comprehensive overview of the sports industry, encompassing the practical techniques and technical skills associated with football and football coaching. The units studied have a strong academic focus requiring dedication and hard work - whilst still delivering a range of important practical skills. Students enjoy the wide variety of subjects that are covered, with the course having been designed to develop and build knowledge and vocational skills throughout the two-year period. The course incorporates all 12 units from the two-year Level 3 Diploma (page 84), with students on the Extended Diploma studying an extra 3 units each year. Additional units will cover the current issues associated with football, practical football and training sessions, sports injuries (prevention, treatment and rehabilitation), talent identification and development, organising sporting events and coaching children and young people. In addition to obtaining the Level 3 Extended Diploma, students undertake the 1st4sport Level 1 Certificate in Football Coaching and the NCFE Level 1 Award in Exercise Studies. The Level 3 Extended Diploma prepares students for a wide range of careers in the football and wider sports industry. It is also a perfect foundation for students wishing to progress To Higher Education - offering up to 420 UCAS Tariff points towards entrance on a wide range of degree courses here at Myerscough or at other universities and colleges. 6 Foundation Degree (FdA) Football Coaching This Foundation Degree course has been designed to provide students with the relevant practical skills, academic knowledge and coaching expertise to gain employment as football players, coaches or working in the wider football industry. It is an ideal choice for anyone who wants to develop their knowledge of the football industry from a practical perspective. Driven by a team ethos, the course is closely linked with football clubs from grassroots to premiership. Students will gain vital work experience on and off the field, from training principles to video analysis systems, with placements at venues such as Preston North End s Centre of Excellence and associated community programmes. The course is based around the work of the modern football coach and encourages students to develop innovative modern ideas, underpinned by traditional values and practices. The main elements of the course include a range of football coaching modules that cover the philosophies, styles and practices of coaching and the elements of skill acquisition, sports performance and delivery techniques. Another module focuses on the three key areas of sport science utilised in football coaching; physiology, psychology and biomechanics. The course also covers elements of business management, sports marketing, sports development and football event management - where students oversee the planning, organisation and funding of their own football tournament. It should be noted that to succeed on this course it is not a pre-requisite to be a gifted and talented footballer. However, it is important to have an enthusiasm for playing the game and a strong interest in coaching. Students also have the opportunity to undertake additional MOS courses. Myerscough College s Degree programmes are validated by the University of Central Lancashire Entry Requirements A minimum of 120 UCAS Tarfiff points achieved by either one or more A Level passes, a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma or BTEC Level 3 Diploma, an NVQ Level 3 in sport or football or a new Advanced or Progression Diploma. Myerscough & Nike The Myerscough College Football Development Centre was recently selected by Nike Football to launch the global talent search campaign The Chance in the UK alongside Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand. Rio arrived unannounced at a Myerscough training match where he selected Myerscough College and England Schools Footballer Joe Bunney to be the first player to go forward. This is just the latest development in a close relationship between the College and Nike Football which has in the past included product tests of the latest Nike kits, equipment and technology, including football boots, GPS monitoring devices and the latest in ball technologies. Studentprofile Anthony Pilkington From student to the Premier League Nothing can beat the adrenalin rush that comes from scoring a goal, especially in a Football League play off final at Wembley - I was named Man of the Match in that game, what a way to end the season! I was scouted at Myerscough around the time we won the English Colleges league and I got to represent England in Italy; then, after finishing my Level 3 Diploma, I signed to Stockport County and notched up three goals in my first four matches. I ve also been called up to the Ireland Under 21 squad and was top scorer at Huddersfield Town before gaining a dream move to the Premier League, with Norwich City. I scored my first Premier League goal in a 2-1 away victory at Bolton and have since scored six more in the 2011/2012 season. It s every lad s dream really - and I m living it!
