1 INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS COMPUTING Blue Mountain Community College Melinda Platt Instructor BA 131 Course Number Course Title Introduction To Fall, Winter, Business Computing Term/Year Spring, Summer Course Credit 4 Type of Program Career Technical Course Plan MP Course Description In this course, you will use a computer to practice the most commonly used Microsoft Office programs. You will also practice using Windows operating system, Internet Explorer for navigating the Internet, communication and etiquette and the basics of using a computer, mouse, and keyboard. Within the Microsoft Office 2013, you will use Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and Outlook. Microsoft Word is a word processing program with which you can create common business and personal documents. Microsoft Excel is a spreadsheet program that organizes and calculates accounting-type information. Microsoft PowerPoint is a presentation graphics program with which you can develop slides to accompany an oral presentation. Microsoft Access is a database program that organizes large amounts of information in a useful manner. Finally, Microsoft Outlook is an and calendar program. Learning Outcomes Objectives Students will focus on the following objectives: Utilize software applications by: Creating, formatting, modifying, and producing business documents in Word. Creating, formatting, modifying and analyzing business document in Excel. Creating, formatting, modifying and running presentations in PowerPoint Creating, formatting, organizing, retrieving and presenting data in Access. 43
2 Creating, formatting and organizing messages/appointment in Outlook. Using the Windows operating system efficiently Using Internet Explorer to obtain and/or download information. Using the E-College course site to access assignments, tests and submit assignments or communicate with instructor. Using SAM Assessment site to submit assignments and retrieve scores. Recognize and identify basic computer concepts by: Defining the computer and its uses. Identifying types of computer application software and system software. Reviewing computer communications and the Internet/WWW. Describe networks and define network terms. Produce course assignments using appropriate business world standards by: Creating professional, accurate, and grammatically correct documents. Creating and organize files into logical folders for efficient file management Downloading and uploading files from the Internet. Maintaining security of files. Completing projects and submitting work on time. Communicating appropriately through using business standards for written communications. 3 Assignment & Exam Schedule A weekly schedule will be provided to students through a handout or by electronic weekly units. These schedules may be changed depending upon the needs of a class. There will be a unit application exam at the end of each software section. These are completed through SAM. Capstone projects can only be submitted once. There will be various multiple choice quizzes covering hardware and software concepts. Course Prerequisite Students should have keyboarding skills and/or keyboard familiarity, along with very basic knowledge of using the computer/mouse/printers. If you are very new to computer, then the CS 080 course is a recommended preparation for the course. Required Textbook Developing OER textbook, with accompanying trade book. Required Software* Microsoft Office 365 University (Includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access + Other Applications) * BMCC s Bookstore sells this software at an academic price to students for about $80 in a subscription base offer. It also includes extra applications in addition to what you need for this class, which is an added bonus. Required Reliable Computer Access & Portable, Removable Storage Device Working, Reliable Computer w/windows Operating System (Windows 8, Windows 7, Vista OS is fine) BMCC Account, Internet Access USB Flash Drive, 1 MB Storage Minimum* *For Students Who Use BMCC Computer Labs or Need to Transport Files To Various Locations Criteria for Acceptable Performance Completion of chapter assignments and exams is required. You cannot receive a grade higher than C, if you do not complete ALL of the software application sections (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint) and at least one assignment from each chapter. 45
4 Late Work Late work will be penalized at 50% for up to 7 days, 0% for past 7 days. Dues dates are clearly stated. Periodic grade updates are available on the online gradebook. Assignments Grading Scale Your work will be graded for accuracy, setup, and professional appearance. Grades will be updated throughout the term. Scoring Rubrics There are two methods of scoring in this class. The instructor will grade the weekly chapter assignments, or special assignments as assigned. The SAM assessment site will grade the SAM projects. Instructor Graded Detailed scoring rubrics for instructor graded assignments are given. You can find the document containing the scoring rubrics under the Doc Sharing tab of the course website. Rubrics will detail point distributions. These assignments can only be submitted once for scoring. Scores will automatically appear in the gradebook within the course site. SAM Graded Detailed scoring rubrics are provided in SAM. Once a student has submitted a project to Sam, results will be return within moments, detailing points deducted and earned. Most projects can be submitted twice, allowing an improved score by correcting errors. Scores will appear in the SAM reports. The instructor will manually transfer those scores back to the course site each week. 46
5 Final Composite Grade The final grade will be based on the following scale. Grades will be rounded up only when student overall grades is equal to or greater than.7 tenths closer to the next letter grade. Examples: A grade of 89.7 will be rounded to an A. A grade of 89.6 will not be rounded to an A. A = 90 to 100% B = 89 to 80% C = 79 to 70% D = 69 to 60% F = 59 to 30% NC = Below 30% Academic Honesty You are encouraged to work together and communicate with other students to solve problems. However, you must complete your own work and your files should originate from you. Each student needs to be actively operating the software when completing assignments. Working in pairs or teams and submitting multiple copies of the same file is not acceptable in this class. You are responsible for the security of your files at all times, including work submitted into the course. If you allow someone to use your computer, you are responsible for keeping your files secure. THESE are workplace expectations and very serious offenses in the world of work. You should not lend your storage device to another student, print for someone else, copy your storage device for another student or share files electronically in any way. Such actions are considered cheating and a violation of the academic honesty policy. Plagiarism and cheating are serious offenses and will not be tolerated in this course. Students who are involved in cheating or sharing electronic or printed data with other students will either receive zero points on each assignment or will receive an F for the course. This will be determined by the instructor. The student(s) will be referred to the appropriate college administrator. These types of offenses are documented and retained on file. 47
6 Academic success requires that a student be diligent and proactive in his/her educational career. Expected Student Behavior Students enrolled in this course are expected to exhibit conduct considered to be acceptable in a college setting. Disruptive behavior is any type of student activity that interrupts the normal flow of information exchange in the classroom in a negative way. Examples of disruptive behavior include: cell phones (text messaging), excessive talking without being recognized by the instructor, late arrival to class, argumentative behavior that extends beyond normal classroom interchange, name calling, profane or racial statements. Such disruptive behavior will not be tolerated and the instructor will request that the student leave the classroom. Readmission to the class can occur only after consultation with the instructor and the appropriate college administrator. Written Communications In addition, s that contain inappropriate or profane, racial language will be reported to the Office of Instruction. Students will be warned on first offense, further offenses could result in removal of course with a grade of F. communications need to professional.
