Supports Board commitment to College and Career Readiness for our students Career academies, after more than four decades of development and three decades of evaluation, have been found to be effective in improving outcomes for students during and after high school. Career academies have therefore become the most durable and best-tested component of a high school reform strategy to prepare students for both college and careers. 3 What is a Career Academy A Career Academy is a type of school-within-a school or small learning community that provides college-preparatory curriculum with a career related theme Small Learning Community cluster of students who have some of the same teachers for at least two years, and who share several classes each year College-prep curriculum with a career theme Academic courses that meet high school graduation and college entrance requirements are linked with technical courses that focus on the academy s field of work Partnerships with employers and post-secondary education An advisory group for the academy includes representatives from local employers, colleges, faculty and administrators

4 The Evidence People learn better and faster and retain information longer when they are taught concepts in context (Stricht, 2002) Integrated academic and technical curriculum leads to higher test scores if implemented well (Stone, Alfeld, Pearson, Lewis & Jensen, 2006) Postsecondary participation rates may be higher for those enrolled in multiple-pathways programs (Sterns & Sterns, 2007)

8 Program Overview The Public Schools of Edison Township s Science & Engineering Academy at Edison High School is a demanding 4-year-program that offers highly motivated students an opportunity to explore their interest in the fields of mathematics, science and engineering. Students will be exposed to the most rigorous curriculum possible in Middlesex County including a minimum of 11 Advanced Placement (AP) courses.

9 Program Overview A 16,000 sq. ft. state of the art addition to be completed for the Fall of Teachers will be able to simulate college lecture experiences

10 Program Overview REQUIRED Four Week Summer Program focused on building the firm foundation in Biology needed to tackle the content at the AP level. Nightly readings from college level text books Assignments from content area teachers Introduction to the software used in the Introduction to Engineering lab Guest speakers from industry

13 Eligibility The Science & Engineering Academy will accept up to 24 ninth grade students. It is open to current 8 th grade students in all of Edison s middle schools. Initial requirements include: Edison resident Honor Roll level achievement in all middle school coursework 8 th Grade Honors Geometry (full year course) Self motivated and independent worker
