2 What are AP and ACP classes like? AP and ACP are college-level courses that demand more of students than regular or honors courses. Classes tend to be fast-paced and cover more material than typical high school classes. More time, inside and outside of the classroom, is required to complete lessons, assignments and homework. AP and ACP teachers expect their students to think critically, analyze and synthesize facts and data, weigh competing perspectives, and write clearly and persuasively.

3 AP or ACP Which is right for me? AP Classes College Board curriculum is widely recognized by colleges and universities Possible college credit, depending on the AP exam score. Public colleges in Indiana are required to award college credit for scores of 3, 4, or 5 Fees - $86 for the exam; will be included in book fees ACP Classes Indiana University curriculum College credit is automatic if you pay for the IU credit, and may be transferrable to other universities Fees - $25* per credit hour, payable to IU (must pay for it to count for AHD) *Subject to change

4 Advance College Project (ACP) Dual high school/college credits Credits offered though Indiana University Teachers are trained through IU You may choose to pay for the college credits or take them for high school credit only Most ACP classes will count toward Academic Honors Diploma, if taken for college credit Must have a 2.7 cumulative GPA in order to take ACP classes for college credit.

6 How Do ACP Credits Transfer? Many colleges will accept the ACP credit, if the grade is C- or higher. It may transfer as a direct degree requirement or as general elective credit. Visit : Core Transfer Library (CTL) shows all public, and a few private Indiana colleges and how they accept transfer credits from other Indiana colleges. All ACP classes at WHS are in the CTL. Private and Out of State Universities: Contact the university directly to ask about transferring ACP credits.

9 Transferring ACP Credits Factors to consider: What am I planning to study? Is the ACP course a degree requirement for my major? Will the ACP course I am taking transfer into the universities I plan to attend? Will the credits transfer directly as a one-to-one equivalent, or will they be considered elective credit? When in doubt, contact the university directly to learn more about transferring credits!

10 For Class of 2016 and Beyond Department of Education Priority List of Dual Credit Classes Only ACP classes on the DOE s Priority List will count towards the Academic Honors Diploma Classes currently on that list are: Calculus Chemistry Composition Finite Math (Approved for Fall 2013) Literary Interpretation

12 Advanced Placement (AP) The College Board s Advanced Placement Program (AP) enables students to pursue college-level studies while still in high school. Based on their performance on rigorous AP Examinations, students can earn credit, advanced placement, or both, for college. Exam are scored 1 5, with scores of 3 5 typically earning college credit. Indiana Public colleges are required to give credit for scores of 3 or higher.

15 Why Take AP? A recent study showed that students taking AP courses and exams were much more likely to earn a college degree in four years. For example, AP English Literature students had four-year college graduation rates that were 62% higher than students who had not taken AP English Literature. A recent study showed that students who earned a 3, 4, or 5 on the AP Exam had higher first-year college grade point averages and were more likely to return for the second year of college than non-ap students of similar ability.

21 Next Steps Talk to your current teachers about AP/ACP Talk to the AP/ACP teacher for more information about the class you are considering Make sure your study habits and organizational skills are strong enough to handle an AP or ACP class Attend AP meetings in Spring. Teachers will announce dates and rooms in May

22 More Steps Read the course book carefully to note prerequisites and course requirements. Use Naviance to keep track of courses you want to take in the future. Plan backwards. Example: a 9 th grader who wants to take AP Calculus as a Senior, will need Honors Pre Calc as a Junior. Will your current schedule get you there?
