8 Infrastructure lifetime The lifetime of an engineering structure is the period during which it safely fulfils the functions for which it was built, taking into account operating conditions and economic requirements. The prediction (or evaluation) of lifetime, whether when designing new structures or maintaining existing ones, depends on economic and regulatory issues related to both operation and maintenance or renewal.
