In both hairdressing and beauty therapy learners have good customer care skills and were professional and confident when wking on clients. Derrin Chesters Level 2 Hairdressing When I was still in school I did a school study programme with Michael John and I absolutely loved my time on the course, I knew it was something I wanted to complete. By the age of 17 I was single mum and it was a tough time f me, I decided I wanted to build a better life and make my son proud of me. Having my son is what gave me the determination to go back to college and retrain, although I am not the oldest of adult learners, I still felt like I might be penalised treated differently from other learners, which I wasn t. I have had no problems with my course since starting I have enjoyed every moment of it. The biggest struggle I have had is the expense of getting to and from the college and affding childcare costs; I have had funding f the course which has now ran out so my goal is to move across to an apprenticeship. This course has given me a lot to look fward to in my future and I hope to complete my training and become a hairdressing tut. When I was made redundant I saw an opptunity to really turn my life around. I was quite apprehensive about going back into education after such a long time, I was wried about how the younger students would react to me joining in at first I thought it would feel very alien to be in this wld of energetic young learners and I thought I wouldn t make any friends which just isn t the case. I see the imptance of learning and gaining skills in something I love to do, I ask me relevant questions than what I would have done as a younger learner. I have paid me attention and I respect the time and efft my tut has put into my learning that day

I have spent the last 16 years in the Army as an Instruct f driving the heavy artillery vehicles. I have gained many qualifications through the Army but they are not recognised on outside of the fces so my only option is to retrain. Whilst looking f a programme to train in I decided I wanted a real career not just a job. I chose barbering because I feel it s a career you can build on and really make of it what you want. Going back into education was something I wanted to do but I knew I would struggle being around younger learners that aren t always content to just listen and learn. Being unemployed is very difficult and I knew I didn t want just any job I want to build an enjoyable life long career f myself and Kimberley has given me really great advice and suppt to do it. This course has given me great determination to build a career; I would gladly jump at the opptunity to take an Adult apprenticeship. In the future I would like to have my own Barber room and transfer my teaching skills from the fces and become a barbering tut
