3 INTRODUCTION EDI is a leading international awarding body that was formed through the merger of the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry Examinations Board (LCCI) and a leading online assessment provider (GOAL). EDI now delivers LCCI International qualifications (LCCI IQ) through a network of over 5000 registered centres in more than 120 countries worldwide. Our range of business-related qualifications are trusted and valued by employers worldwide and recognised by universities and professional bodies Level 1Certificate in Travel and Tourism Aims The aims of this syllabus are to enable candidates to develop: a knowledge of the main components of the travel and tourism industry an understanding of the main characteristics of the travel and tourism industry an understanding of the working roles of people employed in the travel and tourism industry Target Audience and Progression This qualification provides a first introduction to the study of the travel and tourism industry. It is intended to provide a basic understanding of how the tourism system works and how its individual components are linked and interdependent. This qualification will be particularly suitable for: those taking up a study of tourism for the first time and who intend to seek employment in travel and tourism those who want to take a first step towards securing higher level vocational qualifications those who are already working in the tourism industry (for example: hotel receptionist, trainee travel agent, trainee tourist information centre staff, etc). Level of English Required Candidates should have a standard of business English equivalent to Level 1 LCCI English for Business. Level 1 LCCI Written English for Tourism is a useful complementary qualification to this syllabus, requiring candidates to develop good business English in a tourism context and to understand a range of specialist terms. 2

4 Structure of the Qualification The Level 1 Certificate in Travel and Tourism is a single unit qualification that consists of the range of topics detailed below: Syllabus Topics 1 Structure and Components of the Travel and Tourism Industry 2 Travel and Tourism Products 3 Different Types of Tourism 4 Working Roles in Travel and Tourism Guided Learning Hours LCCI recommends that Guided Learning Hours (GLHs) provide a suitable course duration for an average candidate at this level. This figure includes direct contact hours as well as other times when candidates work is being supervised by teachers. Ultimately, however, it is the responsibility of training centres to determine the appropriate course duration based on their candidates ability and level of existing knowledge. LCCI experience indicates that the number of GLHs can vary significantly from one training centre to another. ASSESSMENT Assessment Objectives The examination will assess the candidate s ability to: show a clear understanding of the structures and interconnections within the industry sectors identify and describe the various travel and tourism products and services understand the different types of tourism and explain the reasons why people travel define working roles and opportunities in travel and tourism. Coverage of Syllabus Topics in Examinations There will be 8 questions set on each examination paper, 2 from each syllabus topic. Examination Format The time allowance for the examination is 2 hours Candidates are required to answer 4 questions, 1 from each syllabus topic Each question will be sub-divided into several parts 3

5 Short textual extracts and/or data may be used as the basis for some of the questions All questions are worth 25 marks each. Answer Formats Early parts of the structured questions will require short answers only and will carry fewer marks. For the later parts of some questions, which will carry more marks, students should provide more detailed answers or, where appropriate, use bullet points. Where text or data is provided candidates will be expected to draw on this to answer some parts of the question; other parts will require candidates to draw on the knowledge and understanding they have derived from their studies or from their own work experience. Mark Allocation A positive marking approach is used. Marks are not deducted for spelling, grammar or punctuation.
