1 finance, business and management BSc in Economics and Business Administration General Programme Business in an international study environment I chose BSc(B) after going on exchange, which aroused my interest in international perspectives of business. I wanted to study in English because the world is becoming more and more international, with English being the main business language. Furthermore, I liked the idea of studying with people from around the world. Christine Luise Lauth, Student on the BSc(B)programme The general BSc in Economics and Business Administration programme provides students with in-depth knowledge of two main areas, Business Administration and Economics. The programme aims to give both a broad overview and thorough, detailed knowledge of the essential concepts and theories of economics and business administration. Courses characteristic of the General programme The courses characteristic of this programme constitute 25 ECTS and are taught during the students second year. Seminar in Descriptive Economics allows students to test their competencies acquired in the economic subjects and the tutorials in Descriptive Economics in writing economic reports on a specific topic which can be described and analysed using mainly statistical source material. The given problem is described, elaborated and analysed based on collected data which is why a considerable part of the seminar activity is being able to select relevant information from national and international statistics. Examples of titles for seminar papers could be: Unemployment in Germany since 1989, Economic growth in less developed countries, Inflation and unemployment in the EURO area, Interest rates in Denmark since 1990, and Energy consumption. The Seminar in Business Studies provides an opportunity for in-depth study of theories, models and methods within business-studies subject-areas. The critical dialogue between the participants is the central distinctive learning feature of the seminar course. The topics are related to problems within the areas of Logistics/Management Science, Financial, Finance and Managerial. Students learn to draw up a problem formulation; to structure a report or presentation; to analyse a problem by including relevant theories, models and methods; and to formulate a conclusion based on the analysis. Finance I and II investigate two relatively new issues in corporate finance: Options Theory and its applications, and Corporate Governance and Agency Theory. In Options Theory, we first present the options-related concepts and the model for option pricing, and afterwards we describe how options are embedded in important financial topics such as capital budgeting (real options), debt analysis (callable loans), and capital structure (limited liability, credit risk and the use of warrants). In Corporate Governance and Agency Theory we focus on how ownership structure, managerial structure and economic incentives for chief executives can influence a firm s results and market value. Industrial Economics focuses on industries, firms and competition. It examines the relationship between structural characteristics and corporate behaviour, as well as the impact of competition policy through the modelling of strategic behaviour under market forms which are non-perfect. International Economics provides the analytical framework on which to base an understanding of how an open economy (like that of Denmark) is embedded in the international economy, and of the possibilities for and limitations to economic policy represented by a still-increasing connection to the outside world. The long-term consequences of capital savings, capital accumulation and technological improvement are also addressed. Aarhus bachelor.au.dk/en/businessadministration

3 finance, business and management BSc in Economics and Business Administration Int. Management Business, communication and management It really appealed to me that the teaching was done in English the multicultural factor was important in my decision-making. If you keep your eyes and ears open you ll find a variety of good offers for students CEO lectures, company visits, student jobs, student associations, student discounts. After graduation I want to work within the field of marketing or advertising in a global business. Charlotte Engelgreen, Former student on the BSc in International Management programme, now student on the MSc in Marketing programme Aarhus University s BSc programme in Economics and Business Administration International Management combines classic business administration subjects with subject areas such as language proficiency and US/UK society; intercultural communication; and international management. Courses characteristic of the programme The courses characteristic of this programme constitute 25 ECTS and are taught during the second year. English Language Proficiency and US/UK Society enables students to understand the main points of a complex text and to participate with relative ease in an English conversation on a range of topics. Course objectives include enhancing students ability to argue for a point of view. A further objective is to increase students ability to produce written texts on general topics related to society. The course also gives an introduction to contemporary British and American history by focusing on the main political, social and cultural structures of the UK and the US: a wide knowledge of British and American societal structures prepares students for better understanding and maintaining a range of communicative functions in relation to these two countries. Intercultural Communication: The current trend towards multiculturalism in society has meant that business companies now interact with growing numbers of people from differing cultural and linguistic backgrounds. If managed successfully, intercultural encounters represent an opportunity to acquire knowledge about language, behaviours and values that deviate from one s own, and to use cultural awareness to gain a competitive advantage. If neglected, cultural differences may undermine a company s position, possibly resulting in employee dissatisfaction, costly misunderstandings or indeed the loss of market share. The course aims to increase student awareness of the importance of cultural differences in business; to develop analytical skills; and to enable students to take a pragmatic approach to intercultural communication. International Management: Firms are increasingly dealing with aspects of cross-cultural management. This is true not only for multinational firms operating worldwide, but also for domestic firms which face multicultural environments (e.g. ethnically diverse employees and/or customers). Businesses operating internationally need employees who understand and are able to deal effectively with cultural variety. Therefore, analytical as well as practical skills which help manage effectively in multinational firms are increasingly important. The course examines organisational and individual behaviours, structures, and management practices in multinationals and in business situations involving cross-cultural interactions. A variety of theories relating culture to behaviours in general and management in particular are covered. The course is broadly organised around four themes: the impact of cultures on organisations; the management of cultural diversity; design of international organisations; and the managing of global managers. Together, knowledge of these four areas provides students with a broad understanding of the main issues relating to international management. Aarhus bachelor.au.dk/en/internationalmanagement

5 finance, business and management BSc in Economics and Business Administration: International Business Focus on international business I chose to study International Business at AU Herning because I am aiming for a management position in the future. To me, it is the job content that counts, not the specific sector, and the BSc(B) in International Business gives me the competencies I need to achieve my goal. There are other international students like me in the programme, and cross-cultural cooperation has taught me something which is not included in the curriculum and that is extremely valuable. Angelique Attia, Student on the BSc(B) in International Business programme The BSc in International Business programme aims to provide students with both a general overview and in-depth coverage of international business, the identification and analysis of business problems, and approaches to problem-solving. There is a strong focus on business economics and the corporate world throughout the programme, with a view to integrating theory and practice. The programme is international in scope and provides students with the competencies needed to work in key positions in multinational and international companies. The study programme While academic performance is important, equal weight is placed on developing skills in communicating and debating, developing flexibility and self-discipline, and learning to work cooperatively. The programme atmosphere is intensive and a high level of student engagement and commitment is expected. Teaching is conducted partly in lectures and partly in the form of tutorials in small groups. There is close interaction between students and faculty in an informal environment. Courses include Micro- and Macro Economics, Marketing, Management, Financial, Strategic Management and Organisation, Corporate Finance and International Business. Other courses include Mathematics, Statistics and Methodology. Study abroad The study programme is located at AU Herning for the first two years and for the sixth semester; in the fifth semester students usually attend a university abroad. Student life at AU Herning AU Herning is an excellent environment in which to build a social life and network. Birk Campus offers lodgings for 400 students right next to AU Herning, with facilities including a fitness room, a café, free Internet and a laundry room. There are sports activities in Birk and there is a Friday bar. Career profile The broad scope of the International Business programme equips graduates for a wide range of careers in both private and public sectors. The majority of recent graduates have found employment in the private sector. Graduates typically work in accountancy, financial management, marketing/sales and administration, and they are well qualified for executive positions. A number of graduates go on to further studies at Master s level, either in Denmark or abroad. Many graduates choose to build on their studies by continuing with the MSc in Marketing and Business Innovation, also based at AU Herning. Herning bachelor.au.dk/en/internationalbusinessherning

7 finance, business and management BSc in Economics and Business Administration Sustainability Sustainable development and business According to the United Nations, universities have a vital role to play in shaping the way in which future generations cope with the complexities of sustainable development. Aarhus University s BSc programme in Economics and Business Administration Sustainability combines classic business administration subjects with subject areas like natural resources and environmental economics; sustainable production and consumption; sustainable economics; project evaluation and sustainability; and a seminar on environmental issues. Courses characteristic of the Programme The courses characteristic of this programme constitute 25 ECTS and are taught during the second year. Natural Resources and Environmental Economics: Environmental economics are highly significant in the management of natural resources and the environment, as they are in the formulation of environmental policies. Concepts and methodologies derived from environmental economics can be used to evaluate environmental sustainability in order to deal efficiently with environmental challenges. The course focuses on classical topics in environmental economics, primarily related to microeconomics. Sustainable Economics covers a broad range of topics with a shared focus on long-term sustainable economic development. Topics include sustainable growth; national and global income distribution; natural resources; climate; protectionism and fair trade ; health and education; and developing countries. Sustainable Production and Consumption provides both theoretical and empirical knowledge of the challenges faced by industrial production, marketing and consumption in contributing to sustainable development. Topics covered include industrial environmental responsibility; from the supply chain to supply loops ; industrial ecosystems; sustainable product development and distribution; market communication; environment and consumer behaviour; and food and the environment. Project Evaluation and Sustainability presents various project-evaluation techniques (cost-benefit analysis) often applied by government agencies in order to make optimal decisions concerning public investment activities. Project-evaluation methodologies are key in relation to sustainability in order to decide whether specific initiatives, for example energy or infrastructure projects, are helping to develop the economy in a more sustainable direction. The course aims to present the basic elements of projectevaluation techniques, and to give students practice in analysing specific topics in relation to sustainability. I especially like the specialisation courses on the Sustainability programme. They are based on the latest research and the current global situation. The courses are based on both micro and macro economics which enables me to develop my competencies within these fields. I also like the fact that you are as much of an expert in analysing the situations as any professional, as many of the cases are happening right now and no one knows how they will turn out which leads to many interesting discussions in class. Linette Linnemann Student on the BSc in Sustainability programme In the Seminar on Environmental Issues, each student presents a report which is discussed in a small group of peers moderated by a teacher. The seminar aims to develop the skills of selecting and collecting relevant statistical data materials for describing an environmental issue or problem, as well as presentation and discussion. The Electronic Design Engineering programme equips students to design the software and electronics of the future, design energy-friendly systems by using clean technology (Cleantech), design user-friendly systems, and think innovatively. Students at AU Herning apply hardware and software electronics, as well as mathematics and physics, to prototype cutting-edge projects. Current ongoing projects in the programme include: Designing a wind-turbine-powered car in FabLab, the EDE hackerspace where students have the opportunity to work on projects and play with electronics; Building autonomous robots by designing microcontroller systems and software (embedded technology); Developing smartphone applications; Large research projects like EcoSense, developing applications to help users steer towards CO2-neutral and more climate-friendly behaviour (students in the Electric Design Engineering programme take part in this project); Creating an energy hub or control unit, directing energy to where it can be used or stored. In the fifth and sixth semester, a project is prepared in cooperation with a company, thus allowing students to apply skills within real-life company projects. The Electronic Design Engineering programme allows students to focus on topics of interest while they work in interdisciplinary teams with students from other programmes. Focus areas and practical approach The programme focuses on two areas: Renewable Energy, where students develop and apply technologies within renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions, and Small Electronic Systems, where students help to create the electronics of the future through intelligent and interactive architecture. The study programme is based on project work in close cooperation with companies. Students work on concrete, real-life projects for a company, do their internship in a company, and write their final project in a company. Graduates frequently find employment in the company where they did their internship. Specialisation Students may specialise within the following areas: Cleantech, manmachine interaction, control systems, software, embedded technology and mobile technologies. They also have the opportunity to work with the latest technological knowledge in connection with the EcoSense research project. Studying electronic engineering at AU Herning was a real pleasure. The size of the degree programme and the institution encourage an extremely close collaboration betweeen students and lecturers. The electrical engineering programme at AU Herning covers a wide range of topics and offers good opportunities for following your own interests. At the same time, the programme is extremely professionally oriented and focused on teaching students how to acquire knowledge on their own. This is a competency I have benefited from a lot in my job, because I m the first engineer to be hired here, which means I ve had to acquire the knowledge necessary to do my job on my own. Lars Jonsson, BE in Electronic Design Engineering Development Engineer at Zeteco Energy Student life AU Herning is an excellent environment in which to build a social life and network. 11 technical science, construction and development Bachelor of Engineering in Global Management and Manufacturing Global perspectives on management, sourcing and production The international study programme in Global Management and Manufacturing (GMM) is for students who wish to work in global management, leadership, sourcing and production. The global perspective is an essential part of the study programme, which focuses on new forms of production. A broad engineering programme The GMM degree is a broad engineering programme combining the disciplines of production, sourcing, economics and management. Global markets and companies are in focus during the study period, including Danish global companies such as Bang & Olufsen, Grundfos and LEGO. Students obtain essential knowledge of cultural understanding, both through theory and through working and socialising with fellow students of other nationalities studying on the programme. Subjects and profiles The duration of the study programme is three and a half years. The programme focuses on four main subject areas: management competencies, manufacturing competencies, international competencies and personal competencies. The programme deals with topics concerning management, global sourcing and production, supply-chain management, intercultural communication, design and product development, personal growth, and project management. Unique mentor programme What is truly unique about the study programme is that each student is associated with a mentor company with which they work closely from the third to the seventh semester. This means that students will solve tasks in relation to their studies, and that they can try out theories, models and concepts in the context of real practical problems in the mentor company. In this way students gain numerous opportunities to confront theory with practice during their studies. Learning methods The study programme is divided into seven semesters, each lasting weeks. The central learning method is project organisation. Another learning method focuses on real-life company projects supervised by lecturers and supervisors. Further education An additional two years of study result in a Master s degree: at AU Herning students may choose the MSc in Engineering (Technology-Based Business Development). Alternatively, by selecting the right courses, students can obtain a Graduate Business Diploma (basic) and a Bachelor s degree in Global Management and Manufacturing simultaneously. I am not the type of person who enjoys working with the same tasks every day. I prefer varying tasks and to be busy. The Global Management and Manufacturing study programme has led me to a job which fulfils these demands. As a logistics engineer, I work on many different types of projects, and here I use my education on a daily basis. I can often draw on much of the theory from my education to solve tasks e.g. from the worlds of mathematics and statistics as well as project management and international cultural awareness. And if I get an idea that I want to implement, I usually do investment calculations and analyses to prove that the idea is worth the effort for Grundfos. Jacob Skibsted Jakobsen, BE in Global Management and Manufacturing Logistics Engineer at Grundfos Student life at AU Herning Students have many possibilities for building a social life and network at AU Herning. Birk Campus offers lodgings for 400 students right next to AU Herning, with facilities including a fitness room, a café, free internet and a laundry room. There are sports activities in Birk, and there is a Friday bar. Career profile Graduates are well placed to challenge the international market in terms of global sourcing and production and to find employment as production managers, quality engineers, environmental engineers, technical managers, logistics managers or project managers, in both European and internationally oriented companies. Students also learn to plan, develop, and implement digital communication and marketing strategies, working with websites, digital imaging, animation, database integration, and video production. In all contexts they are required to give practical application to the theoretical skills learned. Problem solving in teams Most assignments on the programme are conducted working in project teams. As many of our students are international, this provides excellent experience in working in a multicultural context. Study or internship abroad The international orientation of the programme is reinforced in the fourth semester by a required study period at a university outside Denmark, or by an internship semester abroad. This part of the course gives students invaluable insights into work and study in a real international environment. Close contact with local industries Students are assigned a real-life case project each semester. These projects give students an insight into the business world and allow them to give practical application to their theoretical knowledge. Career profile Graduates from the programme are equipped for careers in both media and communications. They are well placed to find work as multimedia designers, web coordinators, marketing coordinators, communications associates, or export assistants or to start up as an entrepreneur with their own business in communication or multimedia production. The broad ICM study programme has provided me with many tools that I use in my job as a project coordinator particularly within marketing. The ICM study programme has helped me to look at things from a bird s eye view and has given me the theories and practical skills to choose the right strategy. Communicating with other people is an important part of my job both in Danish and English so it is beneficial to have the language skills obtained during my studies. Furthermore, I am responsible for our website, which has to be updated and interesting to visit. For this, the practical skills gained at ICM are very useful. 15 media, communication and information BA in Marketing and Management Communication Communication and business studies The BA in Marketing and Management Communication covers the area of communication in combination with business studies. The study programme is international, and focuses on communication in different marketing, management and global perspectives within a business context. The study programme provides students with the basic theoretical and practical tools needed to plan, coordinate and carry out marketing- and management-relevant communication activities in global organisations such as creating and updating websites, preparing press releases, reports, product presentations and company profiles, and planning different types of communication campaigns. Furthermore, the students are introduced to the theoretical principles and perspectives underlying marketing and management communication practices, as well as the scientific and subject-related methods that form the basis of advanced studies within marketing and management communication. Linking communication with business studies The study programme places its main emphasis on communication and is designed so that the courses complement each other and integrate elements across the various subject areas. This means that the activities and projects undertaken in the business studies courses form the basis of and framework for activities within the communication courses. This link ensures that one course is always in a dynamic relationship with the other programme courses. Below are some examples of the central courses offered in the study programme. Communication In Communication in a Marketing Perspective, students are introduced to the basic principles of integrated marketing communication, public relations and other relevant communication disciplines such as branding. Students work primarily with marketing communication and public relations concepts, models and theories. They also learn to adapt and edit international branding and marketing communication campaigns, and are trained in choosing between different marketing communication activities and tools. In Communication in a Management Perspective students acquire insights into management and organisational communication and learn how to work with communication activities at the corporate level, for instance designing communication flows, editing mission statements and planning organisational seminars and events. In Communication in a Global Perspective students become familiar with some of the central aspects of globalisation, such as media convergence. Based on these aspects, they acquire skills that enable them to handle communication activities from a cross-national perspective, including designing communication activities with regard to diversity management. I wanted a cross-disciplinary education that approached marketing from a business perspective. The BA MMC seemed to live up to that requirement, and the fact that it was an international programme only made the decision easier. The basic understanding of marketing that the BA MMC gave me is something I use extensively as my job includes strategic as well as tactical and operational decisions. Obviously the theoretical framework isn t everything, but it serves as a solid foundation on which creativity and strategic thinking can be applied. Kristoffer Okkels, BA in Marketing and Management Communication Head of the Digital Department, Datagraf Business Studies The courses Microeconomics and Macroeconomics provide insights into basic economic principles and their applications and developments in a corporate, national and global context. Marketing initiates students in the core steps of the marketing management process; from segmentation of consumers to distribution of products and services, working within both traditional and new areas. Career profile The BA Marketing and Management Communication programme is orientated towards the international job market. Graduates are well placed to apply for positions in international organisations with English as corporate language, and to join those departments within organisations that are responsible for international management, marketing, public relations or branding.
