7 Mangere-Otahuhu Local Board s Vision Our local board is committed to providing collaborative leadership to: - Promote a safe, strong, prosperous and sustainable community - Protect & enhance the natural environment - Attain quality transport, housing and employment that supports our community - Provide healthy recreation, leisure & arts - Support diversity and celebrate our unique history, culture, character and the achievements of our citizens Work, Play & Stay in Mangere Otahuhu.
8 OUR RESPONSIBILITIES VS OUR ADVOCACY ROLE The Local Board has responsibilities for local services such as: - Community facilities and halls - Libraries - Recreation centres - Parks and reserves - Town centre improvement projects - Events - Environment programmes - Arts facilities The Local Board may influence policies, plans and decisions of council and council controlled organisations - CCOs e.g. Auckland Transport. Central government is primarily responsible for funding the education, health, police, state housing and other social sectors in Mangere- Otahuhu. The Local Board will advocate for good outcomes in these areas.
9 About our Area The area includes Otahuhu, Favona, Mangere, Mangere East and Mangere Bridge - Mangere Otahuhu is known as the gateway to New Zealand, for its multicultural communities, key regional facilities & strong local history - Strategically located within our boundaries are key major transport links (SH1 & SH20), rail & air - Landmarks include Mangere Mountain, Auckland Airport, Watercare Wastewater Treatment Plant, Puketutu Island, Tamaki Estuary, Manukau Harbour and the Robertson Hill-Sturges Park volcanic cones & the historic Portage route (Te Tō Waka)
10 Priority: Complete the Otahuhu recreation precinct What - Build the Otahuhu swimming pool - Relocate the library to its new location on Mason avenue Why? - The recreation precinct for Otahuhu has been previously planned and agreed upon - Improve community health and access to recreational facilities for families - Create a hub for the youth & community - Cheaper to complete both projects at the same time?
11 Priority: Build a strong local economy Priorities - Upgrade & redevelop local town centres - Promote Mangere-Otahuhu as a tourist destination - Protect key business/industrial zones - Improve internal & external transport links Key initiatives - Southern Gateway project which includes: - Otuataua Stonefields Heritage Centre - Mangere Mountain Education Centre - Nga Tauwae o Mataoho-Gateway Heritage Route
