1 Labour Market Bulletin Québec August 2014 The Monthly Edition of the Labour Market Bulletin provides an analysis of monthly Labour Force Survey results for the province of Québec and its regions, including its Resource Regions, Intermediary Regions, the Greater Montreal Region and the Capitales. In the same period, Ontario and Canada posted identical job growths of 0.9%. In Canada, we also note a significant increase in part-time jobs (3.6%) compared to full-time employment (0.3%). Only two provinces posted employment growth higher than that of Canada (0.9%): Alberta (3.0%) and Saskatchewan (1.5%). The unemployment rate in Québec has remained stable at 8.1%, higher than the slightly decreasing Canadian rate of 7% as well as the Ontario rate, which is at 7.5%. Similarly, the participation rate dropped by 0.3% to 64.8%, slightly moving away from the pre-recession level of The employment rate also dropped by 0.2% to 59.6%, compared to the Canadian rate of 61.4%, which also decreased by 0.3%.The slowdown in job growth, in addition to the

In fact, the rate for those aged 25 or over increased by 0.5 percentage point, while that for those aged 15 to 24 dropped by 2.7 percentage points between the July 2013 to July 2014 period. A drop in the number of youth looking for jobs and job gains led to the drop in their unemployment rate. By contrast, among the 25 years or over group, it is an increase in the number of job seekers that led to an increase in this group s rate. More specifically, males aged 25 years or over were the only ones to see an increase in their unemployment rate as more of them were looking for jobs but fewer were employed. The opposite situation is apparent for young men who saw their rate drop by 1.9 percentage points: a drop in the number of young male job seekers combined with job gains. Young women faced a similar situation, as their employment rate fell by 3.5 percentage points; so did women aged 25 or over, as their unemployment rate fell 0.3 percentage points, as compared to the rate in July 2013.

3 Labour Market Bulletin - Québec, August 2014 Page 3 EMPLOYMENT BY INDUSTRY Compared to July 2013, the goods-producing sector recorded a drop in employment of 4.4%, mainly attributable to the construction sector (-9.3%) and to the manufacturing sector (-3.0%). Construction achieved a good workforce growth in 2012 and 2013, but recent job losses brought the workforce back to 2011 levels. On the flip side, employment in the service sector enjoyed a job growth of 1.8% over the past year. The strongest job growth was noted in the following industries: information, culture and recreation (17.7%), transportation and warehousing (16.1%), as well as accommodation and food services (9.8%). Conversely, the sectors that posted the most significant losses were business services (- 11.7%) and educational services (-5.8%). Percentage wise, the following regions posted the most losses: Côte-Nord / Nord-du-Québec (-11.1%), Bas-Saint-Laurent (-5.8%) and Laurentides (-3.2%). Conversely, the Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine (7.0%) and the Mauricie (6.2%) regions showed the strongest job gains. The Capitale-Nationale region (5.4%) shows the lowest unemployment rate in Québec. By contrast, the Gaspésie-Îles-de-la-Madeleine (12.3%) region has the highest unemployment rate, followed by Montréal (10.8%).
