1 Date: Late August 2015 April 2016 Rate of Pay: 1 st Year Peer Mentor - $ 11.09/hr 2 nd Year Peer Mentor - $12.17/hr 3 rd Year Peer Mentor - $12.60/hr PEER MENTOR JOB DESCRIPTION Hours: up to 10 hrs/ week (Aug 2015 Apr 2016) Application Process: a completed application form and your resume to getinvolved@sheridancollege.ca. Job Summary: The core of the Sheridan Peer Mentor program is students helping students. General duties include; providing general information, making referrals to appropriate internal offices and/or services and answering questions. Additional duties may include; promotion and advertising and participating in outreaches. Peer Mentors play a pivotal role during new student orientation as each Peer Mentor is required to work at orientation activities at their home campus. Peer Mentors may be able to work in the following areas: Accessible Learning Services, Athletics, Career Education, Health and Wellness, International Services, Library Services and the Student Advisement Centre. Program specific Peer Mentors are employed in Child and Youth Worker/Social Service Worker and Police Foundations (Davis campus only). Program specific Peer Mentors must be enrolled in those programs. General Job Duties May Include: Helping Students One-on-one Peer matching Small group student assistance On-line student assistance, virtual communities, Provide course based registration support to students in the office Helping your Department and Other Peer Mentors Participate in regular team meetings Responding to s and phone messages in a timely manner
2 Helping with Research Provide advice to your department on relevant social networking strategies and communication Collecting and compiling statistics and feedback from student mentees and other participants Basic Technical Support Give one-on-one assistance to students Assist in the use of photocopiers, printers and A/V equipment Front Desk Assistance Greet students in centre and answer basic questions Provide directions and make referrals Promoting and Advertising Create posters and displays to promote resources, services and special events Collaborate with Peer Mentors and staff from other areas of the college to coordinate events Write articles or information pages to be used in a variety of ways Orientation Provide guidance and direction and perform all tasks assigned to you at new student orientation events Student Services Participate in collaborated promotion and outreach of Student Services Centre Participate in activities related to New Student Orientation and transition to start of term Skills and Requirements: Full-time student enrolled at Sheridan College with minimum 3.0 GPA Strong interpersonal and communication skills Responsible, well organized and dependable Strong interest in assisting fellow students Proficiency with basic computer programs and troubleshooting Comfortable asking for assistance and/or clarification when needed Previous experience in customer service is an asset Must be available during the last week of August Must be available to work at new student orientation events at students home campus

Peer Mentors are involved in outreach presentations, special event planning, and one-on-one and small group work with registered students. Peer Mentors facilitate both social and academic success for all students with disabilities by assisting them as they transition to College and throughout their journey at Sheridan. Athletics Peer Mentors in the Athletics department share the responsibility of the daily operations and on-site promotions of varsity and athletic programs. This includes organizing and aiding in the operation of Campus Recreation and Varsity tournaments and Sheridan intramural and extramural league sports. Career Education Peer Mentors promote Career Education services and special events to the students within a specific academic school. By developing interactive approaches to reaching fellow students, and delivering strong presentations in classes, the Peer Mentors increase the Centre's visibility resulting in higher usage of the Centre. Peer Mentors also provide basic information on the Career Education web site, jobs.sheridaninstitute.ca and workopoliscampus.com, and refer students to the professionals in the Career Centre. Peer Mentors perform resume critiques, mock interviews, demonstrate/ showcase optimal resume, and coach students on job search strategies such as networking and Linked In. Child and Youth Worker/Social Service Worker Note: Students must be enrolled in either the Child/Youth Worker or Social Service Worker program to apply. Students who are selected as Child and Youth Worker/ Social Service Worker Peer Mentors will have demonstrated a high level of student leadership and academic achievement within the program and can serve as effective role models for first year students enrolled in the program.
4 Peer Mentors will show a strong commitment to helping new students make the transition to Sheridan along with being part of a team of Peer Mentors at Sheridan. Accordingly all Peer Mentors will require high motivation, strong communication skills, and attention to detail. Health and Wellness Health and Wellness Peer Mentors help to promote Health, Counselling, and Wellness resources to students across campus, in part by participating in the delivery of outreach activities and events for students. They encourage timely and effective use of all Student Affair s resources for academic, personal, and social development leading to student success. They build community by fostering inclusive interactions and educational collaborations across programs and services. International Services International Peer Mentors work both as part of a team and independently, to assist International students with social and cultural integration in order to facilitate their academic and personal success at Sheridan. Library Services Library Peer Mentors assist students in the use of the Library and its resources. They may conduct information/orientation sessions, create displays, and assist in the organization of special events. Police Foundations Note: Students must be enrolled in Police Foundations to apply. Students who are selected as Peer Mentors will have demonstrated a high level of student leadership and academic achievement within the Police Foundations Program and thus can serve as effective role models for first year students enrolled in the program. Peer Mentors will show a strong commitment to helping new students make the transition to Sheridan along with being part of a team of Peer Mentors. Accordingly all Peer Mentors will require high motivation, strong communication skills, and attention to detail. Student Advisement Centre Note: Only Student Advisement Centre Peer Mentors will be required to work full time through July August. Student Advisement Peer Mentors assist students with their academic and social transition to college by providing consistent, timely and accurate information. Peer Mentors make personal connections with students by phone, and in person through the First Year Connections (FYC) program. The First Year Connections program starts with a summer phone campaign to new students and continues throughout the academic year, with various duties within Student Advisement. Student Leadership and Engagement Student Leadership and Engagement Peer Mentors assist the Program Coordinators in the effective administration and promotion of the Peer Mentor Program. This is accomplished by
5 liaising with current Peer Mentors through ; by writing and/or compiling articles for the program blog; participating in and helping to facilitate the Peer Mentor Training Day; identifying, planning and implementing activities; and completing a range of tasks in support of the Program's recruitment, promotion, liaison, social and administrative activities.
