1 MERIT BADGE CLASS SCHEDULE MAY

2 IMPORTANT INFORMATION Scout Conduct and Expectations Participants are expected to show respect to the Instructor and other members of the class, participate without being disruptive, and obey rules or a parent will need to attend the class with them. Scouts must check in at the front desk and receive a pass before being admitted to class. Please also bring a pen to each class and a blue-card to the last class. A scout must have all of his paperwork, requirements, and projects completed in order to complete the badge. The cost of registration is for instruction and not for a signature on the card. Be careful not to lose or throw away any work, even after you have completed the class. Instructors are only required to keep a record of completion for one year so workbooks become your proof of completion if you lose your blue card. Cancellations If your scout is unable to attend a class that he has registered for, contact the Fitness Center BEFORE the class is held. Once the first class has started, there will not be a transfer or credit available. REGISTERING FOR CLASSSES Register for all classes at afcity.org. Click Fitness Center. Click Register for Activities. Log in or click on Register for Activities. Click Boy Scouts and select badges. Note: First cost listed is for AFFC members only. Course Changes All classes are subject to change. We will notify you by of any changes that are made if you have already registered for a class and it is changed. It is your responsibility to make sure we have a current so we can notify you. If a class is canceled your money will remain as a credit for a future class. If a class is rescheduled, you will automatically be transferred to the new class and notified of the new dates and time by . If a class is full, please contact the Fitness Center to have your son s name put on a waiting list. Please do not ask to be an exception to be included in a class as we cannot make exceptions to the class sizes. There are no makeup dates for missed classes. 2

You can register for these lessons under Boy Scouts Swim Test Lessons. The next class will be June 1. Parent Information Free Parent Class Do you need help understanding the Advancement process or how to complete the Eagle Rank paperwork? Come to these classes and get the help you need. The classes are free, but you need to register. Free Merit Badge Sign-Offs Saturday, June 13 from 10:00 am 12:00 pm Counselors will be available to sign off any completed merit badges. Bring your completed workbooks, proof of requirement completion, and a blue card. Any scout is welcome to come, even if he did not work on the merit badge with our instructors. 3

4 CLASS SCHEDULE Badge Course Info Description American Business Dates: May 22 & Aug 21 Time: 4:00-5:00 p.m. Counselor: Yvonne American Cultures Dates: April 17 Time: 5:00-7:00 p.m. Counselor: Yvonne American Heritage Dates: July 7 Time: 2:00-4:00 p.m. Counselor: Yvonne American Labor (Not currently offered) Scouts are required to visit a bank and interview a staff member, keep track of a stock for 3 months, and run a business for 3 months. This badge can be done in conjunction with the Salesman and Entrepreneurship Badges. This is a fun class that will help scouts learn more about different cultures. Before attending class, each scout must attend a festival, celebration, pro-gram, exhibit or other cultural event and be prepared to share something he learned from it. Scouts will learn about American history and cur-rent events. Scouts need to find out about their own family heritage before coming to class. This goes well with Genealogy merit badge. No image Animal Science (Not currently offered) Animation (New class!) Archaeology Dates: June 23 & July 7 Time: 7:00-8:00 p.m. Archery Dates: Apr 13, 20, and 27 Time: 4:00-6:00 p.m. Cost: $23-$26 Counselor: Brent Architecture Dates: June 5 Time: 2:00-4:00 p.m. Counselor: Yvonne This is a new merit badge that will be released sometime in the summer We will begin offering it shortly after it is released. Scouts will have the opportunity to learn about Archaeology during class. The home-work will be creating a time capsule and doing a report on a career in Archaeology. Scouts will learn to successfully use a compound bow, make a bow string and an arrow from a bare shaft, and learn rules for archery safety and safe handling of a bow and arrows. Scouts must be able to pull back a 12 lb. draw weight bow and be willing to follow all instructions. Supplies provided. This class will cover Architecture history, in-depth plan review in which scouts will learn about change and careers in Architecture. All work will be done in class. 4

All supplies will be provided. Scouts will learn about stars, constellations, and the orbits of the planets. Scouts will need to provide their own transportation and means to attend the Clark Planetarium "Night Vision" in Salt Lake City for the third class. (Showing is at 6:45pm and cost is $8) Most of the requirements for this badge can be completed on your own so we will not be offering it as a class. You can go online to and print off the workbook. Once the requirements are completed, contact the Fitness Center to arrange a time to meet with the counselor to get this badge signed off. Similar to Personal Fitness. More information coming soon! More information coming soon! Scouts will learn what equipment to carry on their backs and what knowledge to have in their heads. The second class will be a 2-5 mile hike with full packs. The homework for this class includes completing THREE backpacking treks and preparing a pictoral report of each trek to present at the last class. Scouts will learn how to weave and complete one project in class. Two projects will need to be com-pleted as homework. Supplies will be handed out in the first class for all projects. Scouts will watch birds and learn to identify them by their characteristics. This class will help scouts complete all of the paperwork for the Camping Merit Badge, but will not complete the Merit Badge as scouts must complete 20 camping nights and other assignments associated with that requirement which can-not be done in class. 5

They need to bring an empty 2-liter bottle with a lid to class for an experiment. Cost includes supplies for the class. ($3 supply fee included.) Scouts will have a great time learning how to play chess. They will need to bring their own chess set. Homework includes teaching another scout how to play and keep track of scores. Scouts need to have a Chess Merit Badge Pamphlet for this class. Scouts need to attend a city council meeting and complete 8 hours of service. There will be other homework assigned and information that Scouts will be required to find out about their community. *Required for Eagle This class requires 2 of the following: visit a national landmark (There are some in most Utah communities), visit a federal facility, or do research on a national monument. *Required for Eagle Most of the homework is done on the internet and includes research to compare different countries to the U.S. All homework can be completed by going to state.gov. *Required for Eagle More information coming soon! Scouts will learn how coins are made and the terms for collecting coins. They will need to bring a coin collection to the second class. Scouts will need to bring their collection to present to the class and explain the details about their collection. No coin collections or stamp collections because they are separate merit badges. Class size is limited. Scouts will need to attend a public meeting such as a city council meeting or a school board meeting, arrange to give a 5 minute speech, and conduct a court of honor or campfire program. *Required for Eagle 6

They will complete one project in class and then they will be required to do one as a homework assignment as well as do a report on a career. Scouts will learn about food-related illnesses and the food groups. They will be required to plan 6 days of meals and find out how much the cost is for food for the 6 meals. Scouts will also need to prepare some meals at home. Part of the cost of the class includes pre-paring some small meals in class. ($4 supply fee included.) *Required for Eagle Scouts will learn the role that everyone plays as part of crime prevention. Homework includes collecting 10 articles on crime/prevention efforts in our area. Scouts need to bring their bike to the second class, ready for inspection, and will do their first 10-mile ride. During the summer, scouts will need to complete six more rides (one 10-mile, two 15- mile, two 25-mile, and one 50-mile. Scouts will learn about being a dentist and causes of tooth decay. Scouts should have visited a dentist for a routine checkup before taking this class and be pre-pared to discuss his experience. Scouts need to watch three videos at BEFORE coming to class. They will earn the Cyber Chip while working on this badge. (The Programming Merit Badge is very similar.) This class will teach scouts to have an appreciation for those with disabilities. Scouts will visit a place that works with people that have disabilities and observe 2 different locations about the accessibility for people with disabilities. Scouts will learn about dogs and they need to show how to take care and train a dog. They must have a dog or have taken care of a dog for two months. Requirements #4, #5, #8, & #9 must be completed before coming to class. In this class scouts will build a single-pole, double-throw switch and connect it to a light. They will also learn how a home electrical system works. Scouts will learn first aid for electrical-related injuries. Scouts will learn the basic theories and fundamentals of electronics, how to work with electronic components safely, the function of basic components, how to solder and how to draw a schematic. A working electronic device will need to be assembled to complete the merit badge. 7

Scouts are required to take part in an Emergency project or drill and a troop mobilization exercise. Some of the homework for this is similar to the Safety Merit Badge. *Possible Required for Eagle This class will develop critical thinking skills in the area of energy use and its conservation. Home-work is a 2-week evaluation of a home s energy use. Scouts will learn more about the different aspects of engineering and what engineers do. They will de-sign and draw plans for a piece of patrol equipment. More information coming soon! Please send a pencil and a flashlight with your son to the class. Scouts will spend part of the time outside doing observations so dress accordingly. *Possible Requirement for Eagle Scouts will be required to keep track of chores for 3 months, plan a family project that will benefit their family and do a project with their family. They will also need to conduct 1 or more family meetings where specific topics are discussed. *Required for Eagle Scouts will learn more about the history of fingerprinting and how it is used for identification. Scouts will fingerprint themselves and learn to analyze their fingerprints. This is a fun, informative class where scouts learn how to be prepared in case of a fire. They will con-duct a home safety survey, conduct a family fire drill, and draw a fire escape plan for their home. The second class will be at the AF Fire Station. Scouts will learn the basics of first aid and CPR. They are required to bring a personal first aid kit and the family first aid kit. Scouts are required to have the First Aid Merit Badge Pamphlet. *Required for Eagle 8

This merit badge is one of the elective merit badges for the World Conservation Award and also for the William T. Hornaday Awards for Boy Scouts. Scouts are required to get a fishing license and bring their own poles to the 2 class which will be held at Highland Glen Park where they will be fishing. See the website for more details when registering. Scouts will cover all of the requirements during class, including tying at least two types of flies and casting. Scouts will be fishing and must have their own pole and a current fishing license if applicable. ($3 supply fee included.) Scouts will design and build a prototype of a game using the medium of their choice. They will need to keep a Game Design Notebook in a 3-ring binder as part of this class. Scouts should come to the first class with a game design in mind and be prepared to explain it. We will not be offering this badge as a class. Once the requirements are completed, contact the Fitness Center to arrange a time to meet with the counselor to get this badge signed off. Scouts will be required to bring a pedigree chart, a family group sheet, and a timeline of important dates in their lives. They will also be required to visit a Genealogical library before attending the class. More information coming soon! Scouts will learn about rocks, minerals and mineral resources. Scouts need to visit a museum or Geology department at a University before attending the class. 9

Home Repairs Counselor: Brent Horsemanship Scouts are required to design and produce a printed piece using one of the four printing processes as well as show his knowledge of different types of binding. The second class will be from 4-6 and is a Field Trip to a printing facility. The address will be given during the first class. Scouts must take five 10-mile hikes and one 20-mile hike on six separate days. Plans for each hike must be presented at the first class PRIOR to taking any hikes and must include map routes, clothing, equipment, and food lists. Written reports are required for each hike. *Possible Required for Eagle All of the requirements for this badge must be completed at home, so we will not be offering it as a class. You can go online to to view the requirements and print a workbook. Once the requirements are completed, contact the Fitness Center to arrange a time to meet with the counselor to get this badge signed off. Indian Lore (One-time class) Dates: April 27 Time: 4-6pm Cost: $12 - $15 Insect Study Inventing Dates: Jun 18 & Jul 16 Time: 6-7pm Cost: $12 - $15 Counselor: Mati Journalism This is a fun class that will help scouts learn more about some of the Indian Tribes in our area. In class, scouts will play Indian games, make an item used by a tribe, and make a model of a dwelling, as well as complete all of the other requirements for this merit badge. Scouts will complete two projects in class and will come up with their own invention and build a proto-type of it to complete this badge. Supplies for the two class projects will be provided. Time: Cost: Mining in Society Counselor: Dana Model Design & Building Time: (3 hours of classes) Cost: $12 - $14 Counselor: Michael J. Scouts will learn about landscaping and careers associated with this. There will be projects to be completed in class. Scouts will learn about the court system and what the job entails to be a lawyer. They will also do a mock trial in the class. Scouts will interview a lawyer and/or a police officer in class. Some of the requirements correlate with the Crime Prevention Merit badge. Scouts need to bring an item that is made from real tanned leather to class and they will learn how to recondition it. Do not send anything made from suede. All work will be completed in class and all supplies will be provided. Scouts are required to pass the pre-test (swim 400 yards) during the first class in order to continue this class. If he does not pass the pretest, he will be re-moved from the class and your account will be credited, minus $7 for the pretest. Send an extra change of clothes and a towel. *Possible Required for Eagle Scouts will be studying about different mammals in our area. Homework includes visiting a Natural History Museum OR writing a 500-word report AND complete a project that will influence the numbers of mammals in their area. This class requires Scouts to visit a Doctor's office and find out some information. They also need to volunteer at a health carerelated fair. More Information coming soon! This is a new badge! We will not be offering this badge as a class. Once you have completed the badge requirements our counselor will help you pass this off. Contact us to arrange a meeting with the counselor or come to a Merit Badge Sign-Off. Scouts will need to make two models, not from a kit, as part of their homework. Scouts need to bring a mechanical pencil with lead, eraser, drafting tools (a ruler, triangle, drafting com-pass, and protractor), scaled paper, and a signed blue card to class. 11

They must provide their own video or digital cam-era capable of shooting video. The second class will be a field trip to a motion studio. Scouts must make a homemade musical instrument and bring to class. They must also come prepared to perform a musical number of their choice. More information coming soon More information coming soon Scouts will be learning about ocean currents and climates and making a model out of clay in class. They need to come prepared to share a 5-minute speech or a 500-word report on an Oceanography topic. ($2 supply fee included.) Scouts need to provide their own orienteering compass (one with the clear base plate). We will start inside, but the majority of the class will be outside and involves a lot of walking so dress accordingly. The class will finish at the south side of the Cemetery by the Veteran's monument so please pick up your son there. Scouts will learn the proper safety procedures when applying paint and coatings. They will be painting 2 different surfaces. The cost of the class includes a supply fee. Scouts should learn about a career in painting before coming to class. ($5 supply fee included.) Scouts need to be prepared to exercise in each class. They are required to bring a copy of their scout physical to the first class and a note from the Dentist stating that they have been seen in the last 6 months. This class is held every other week for 12 weeks. *Required for Eagle This class will require 3 projects: create a budget and track finances for 13 weeks, track time for one week, and complete a project plan. Please look for a note to come home the first day of class regarding tracking finances. Required for Eagle 12

They also need to read a book or pamphlet about their pet and be prepared to write a report on it. Scouts need to bring a SLR camera or a digital camera. They will be required to take pictures and bring the prints to the second class. HELD AT KIMBERLY PARK (990 N. 250 W. in AF) Scouts will learn the differences in ropes, splicing, and how to make rope, as well as complete four projects. Scouts will be outside part of the first class and most of the second class so be sure to send a water bottle and sunscreen. Be sure to check out prerequisites for taking this class. ($2 supply fee included.) Each scout will make a list of 10 plants around their home and 5 invasive/non-native plants in their area. The first class will be outside so dress accordingly. Scouts learn about home plumbing systems, plumbing-related tools, and plumbing-related skills, including how to cut and thread a steel pipe and how to clean out a sink trap. ($3 supply fee included.) Scouts will be making three pots out of clay and learn terms related to pottery. Scouts will need to visit a museum between classes. All supplies, including glazing and firing will be included. ($8 Supply Fee included) This new badge will introduce scouts to a variety of programming languages that make modern living possible. Scouts should go online and review materials at before coming to class. ($3 Supply Fee included) Scouts will be learning about different diseases and prevention along with treatments. They will be required to interview a Food Service Manager. They will also need to do a report on a career in the Public Health industry. Scouts should come to class prepared to give a 3-5 minutes talk about themselves, an 8-10 minutes talk about a subject of their choice, and a 3-5 minute talk that includes visual aids. 13

The cost of the class includes the supplies needed. All work will be done in class. ($2 supply fee included.) Scouts will gain an understanding of modern radio communications. Broadcast and hobby (Ham) radio will be discussed and the services they provide to the community. Scouts will need to make a detailed report of radio broadcast communications in use today. There are several options on homework from building a railroad car model to planning a trip and taking a ride on the railroad. The counselor will discuss these options with Scouts. Most of the requirements for this badge can be completed doing school work, so we will not be offering it as a class. You can go online to and print off the workbook. Once the requirements are completed, contact the Fitness Center to arrange a time to meet with the counselor to get this badge signed off. Scouts will learn about the protected and unprotected reptiles and amphibians. THEY WILL NEED TO TAKE CARE OF A REPTILE OR AMPHIBIAN FOR AT LEAST A MONTH AND CHART THE CARE TAKEN. Scouts will design, build, and program a robot as part of this fun and interactive class. Scouts need to complete Requirement #3 before coming to class. Check online at Scouts will learn the importance of education. Scouts will learn about the history of Boy Scouting and the founders. They will need to visit a scouting exhibit or museum, interview former scouters and make a collection of scouting memorabilia. Scouts will sculpt two figures from clay and create a plaster mold. Scouts will need to learn about careers in sculpture as homework. All supplies are included in the cost of the class. ($8 Supply Fee included.) Scouts will learn more about search and rescue techniques. They must complete the Online Training (ICS-100) before coming to the first class. (This training must be completed in one sitting.) The second class will be at High-land Glen Park where they will do a search and rescue exercise. Scouts will learn about different ways to communicate, including signaling, Morse Code, ASL, semaphore, braille, sound and hand signals. BEFORE CLASS scouts will need to lay out a one-mile trail for their troop with six signs or markings. This class will demonstrate how soil and water shape our world. There are prerequisites to be completed before class so make sure to check registration notes. Scouts will learn about space, why we explore it, and how it benefits mankind. Scouts will build and launch a rocket. The rocket launch will be during the last class and family and friends are welcome to come and watch. (Includes $10 Supply Fee - all supplies included.) Scouts are required to participate in TWO DIFFERENT sports and record their training. We will not be offering this as a class, but you can go online to and print off the workbook. Once the requirements are completed, contact the Fitness Center to arrange a time to meet with the counselor to get this badge signed off. 15

Scouts will prepare a stamp collection to display during the second class. Scouts will learn about sustainability in five different areas and complete two tasks for each area. They should come up with their own definition of sustainability before starting this badge. *Possible Required for Eagle Scouts must be a level 4 or higher swimmer and know at least 4 strokes. There will only be minimal stroke instruction so if you need help with the strokes, please complete the BSA Swim Lessons before taking this class. **Possible Required for Eagle Scouts need to get swatches of two natural-fiber fabrics, two synthetic-fiber fabrics, and one cellulosic fabric and research the origin, major characteristics, and general content of each type of fiber obtained. It will be helpful if the scout writes these things down as they will give a small report in class on a few of the fabrics. ($4 Supply Fee.) Scouts will demonstrate various aspects of theatrical involvement. They will be required to write and direct a ten-minute play. There may be other homework assigned. The homework coincides with the Moviemaking Merit Badge. Scouts will need to complete Requirement #5 BEFORE coming to class. They will learn more about traffic safety and precautions that are in place to keep us safe while driving. Weather Time: (3 hours of classes) Cost: $12 - $14 Counselor: Michael Scouts will demonstrate their knowledge of various weather conditions, cloud formations, outdoor safety rules in different weather situations, and diagram the water cycle. They will be required to make a weather instrument and record weather conditions. Scouts need to be prepared to give a 5-minute presentation during the last class. 16

Scouts will need to construct a shelter and spend the night in it as homework, providing pictures and presenting an oral report on their experience. Scouts will learn about different types of wood and when each is appropriate for a project, identify different tools used, and how to properly sharpen and care for those tools. They should bring a piece of soft wood and a sharp pocketknife to class. SCOUTS MUST EARN THE TOTIN' CHIP RECOGNITION BEFORE STARTING THE CLASS. ($6 supply fee included.) Scouts will learn about production of wood from growth to creating a finished product. They will learn about tools and proper care. There is a list of requirements that must be done before the class as well as a list of tools they need to bring to class. ($6 supply fee included.) 17
