Turn to Appendix C on page 23 to perform the additional steps required before continuing with the next step. Step 16. Check for application updates Estimate 5-15 minutes When you first log in, Configuration Manager (CM) runs automatically to check for any software or configuration updates to the pre-installed software. The check takes 5 to 10 minutes and during this time several commands on the menu displayed by clicking the IDA icon are disabled. You can check if CM is working by hovering the mouse over the CM icon in the Windows notification area of the Windows taskbar. To manually check for updates, look in the notification area of the task bar on your Windows desktop, (normally the lower right-hand corner of your screen near the system clock). You should see the Intelligent Desktop Assistant (IDA) icon, which is a blue circle with a white arrow. Click the IDA icon and then click Check for Application Updates on the shortcut menu. If the command appears disabled, then your PC is already running the check for updates. 12

You may see a message indicating that Configuration Manager (CM) is already running. You can ignore this message it means that Check for Application Updates is already in progress. If you are prompted that your PC needs to be restarted at the end of the update process, close any other applications that you are running, click OK on the prompt, and allow your PC to restart. Step 17. Read the Local Account Password Check screen A Local Account Password Check may run during the application updates or after you next log on. The check automatically resets a password for the hpadmin user that your PC used during the set up process and displays a window with details of what it has done. Read the information in the window, make a note of the password displayed, and then close the window. Step 18. Install PC Encryption All HP employees and contingent workers with HP assets are required to install PC Encryption ( on all work PCs unless you meet the exception criteria ( Install this software before you start using your PC. If you had PC Encryption (McAfee encryption) on a previous PC, you must reinstall it on your new PC. ( The installation program will prompt you for a PC Encryption password; please use the same 6 digit password you were previously using on your old PC. The PC Encryption Local Recovery questions and answers for your new PC are the same as you set on your old PC (you will not be prompted to set them again) 13

Step 19. Install additional applications Install any additional applications that you require that have not already been pre-installed, such as MS Project or business applications such as SAP client. To see the PC COE applications that are currently installed and those available for installation, click the Intelligent Desktop Assistant (IDA) icon in notification area of the Windows taskbar. From IDA s menu, you can find applications by clicking CM Application Self-Service Manager. If this command is currently unavailable then your PC is currently checking for new updates. Try again in a few minutes when the check has completed. Step 20. (Optional) Copy data and settings from your previous PC If you are migrating from an old Windows XP PC COE computer, you can easily copy your data and settings to your new PC. If you have performed the set up using a VPN connection, you must reboot your PC before connecting it to your old Windows XP PC to ensure that the old PC correctly detects your new PC. First install the Migrate My Computer application from CM Application Service Manager on your old XP PC. Go to for help installing the application. Then view the Migrate My Computer user guide for further information and step by step instructions. You can view the user guide from the Start menu on your old PC by going to All Programs and looking in the Migrate My Computer folder. You can also download the user guide from Step 21. Return your old PC if you have one If you have an old PC you will be required to return it within 1 working week from receipt of your new PC. If your old PC is an HP PC, follow the HP PC Return Process to find out what to do with your old PC. If your old PC is an EDS Dell PC, follow your EDS regional COE hardware return process to return your old PC. Congratulations! You have now finished setting up your new PC. 14

What else do I need to do? This section describes additional optional steps that you may want to perform. If you need information or more help for any steps that are not included in the initial set up process, see Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on page 29. Feedback Survey Your feedback is essential to help us improve the PC set up process. We would appreciate a few minutes of your time to provide valuable information related to your recent experience setting up your PC. A few days after set up is complete, a pop up window will prompts you to complete this survey. You may also access this survey from the following web page: Network printer connections To set up network printer connections on your new PC, you can use Direct Print. More information is available at DigitalBadge(s) How to start using a DigitalBadge on your new Windows XP PC COE computer depends on the type of DigitalBadge that you use: Class A DigitalBadges are stored on an ActivKey or ActivCard, so all you need to do is plug your ActivKey or ActivCard into your new PC and your DigitalBadge is automatically found. Class B DigitalBadges should not be transferred from an old PC. Just get a new one by going to and then follow the links to enroll for a new Class B DigitalBadge. It is quick, simple, and there is no additional cost to HP for getting a new DigitalBadge. If you have a Class A DigitalBadge already stored on your ActivKey/ActivCard, no Class B DigitalBadge is required; just use the Class A DigitalBadge instead. If you are using an SMIME DigitalBadge for secure , first manually export your current and any previous SMIME DigitalBadges from your old PC, copy each exported file to your new PC, and then import it back into your browser/mailer. You must do this for all your old SMIME DigitalBadges, even those that are revoked or expired, if you still have old messages that were encrypted with these DigitalBadges. In addition, if you are performing a restore of your data because your old PC was lost or stolen, it is important that you revoke your existing SMIME DigitalBadge by getting a new one so it cannot be used by someone else to impersonate you. A revoked DigitalBadge cannot be used for future 15

secure activities, but it is still required to unlock any old encrypted messages you have stored. If you did not have a DigitalBadge with your old PC, you most likely do not need one with your new PC. For more information about DigitalBadge, go to PC Backup Go to for the latest service information about how to protect your data. Wireless network connections If you use the Migrate My Computer application to copy settings from an old PC, your network connection settings may transfer but you must re-enter the security key the first time you connect to one of the transferred wireless networks. To manually set up a wireless network connection, make sure your wireless network card is enabled (for example, the wireless blue light is visible on your notebook or tablet PC) and then go to the Windows Network and Sharing Center and select Set up a connection or network. For more information about connecting to Secure WLAN or WLAN Net 15/16 wireless networks available at HP offices, go to Fingerprint readers If you have a fingerprint reader on your PC, you MUST NOT install any additional software associated with the device, configure the device, or use the device for any purpose. This device is not supported by the IT helpdesk, it is not approved by IT Security for access control, and installation of related software may interfere with the normal operation of your PC. If the device is approved and supported in the future, information will be available at the EA web site: 16

Appendix B Information requested during the set up At Step 11 in the set up process, a screen similar to the following may appear asking you to enter some information. The actual fields displayed vary depending on how much information the set up process has been able to obtain automatically from the HP network. Details of how to obtain the requested information are provided in this appendix. Address At Address, type your primary HP address; for example, sally.smith@hp.com or ssmith@hp.com. Password At the two boxes below NT/Domain Account password, type your password in each. Click Continue. If you are a new employee, remember that you must change your temporary password before you can complete this process. See Error! Reference source not found. on page Error! Bookmark not defined. for more information. Full Name At Full Name, type your name; for example, Susan Smith. User Name / User Domain / Computer Domain If you are new to HP, your HP manager needs to provide you with the user name and user domain that they received after requesting your account. If you are not new to HP but you do not remember your user name or your user domain, you have several different options to retrieve this information: If you have an old PC, start it up and at the log on screen your User Name and User Domain may be pre-populated with this information; for example, EMEA\smithsa, where EMEA is your Domain Name and smithsa is your User Name. If you do not have an old PC, ask to borrow a colleague s PC, then go to In the People Finder section on the top right of the window, type in your name, and then select your name from the list that appears. 19

In the page that displays your details, an entry marked NT User ID gives your Domain Name and User Name. For example, EMEA\smithsa, where EMEA is your Domain Name and smithsa is your User Name. If you are asked for a Computer Domain, use the same value as your User Domain. Timezone Select the time zone where you normally work from the drop-down list. Computer Name Follow Step B1 through B7 below to manually obtain a computer name. DO NOT use the computer name that is shown on your old PC or that you see on a colleague s PC as each computer name must be unique. Step B1. From another PC, go to and click the region where you work. It is very important that you are logged on to this web site with your and password, even if you are logged on to a colleague s PC. Step B2. Click the Home button at the top of the page and the following screen appears: At this screen, confirm that the information listed (such as Employee Number, Employee Name) is yours. If this is not your information, click Log Off and then start again at Step B1. Scroll down the page until you reach the Computer Accounts section. Then click Options just to the left of the Computer Accounts title, as shown. 20

Step B3. On the next screen as shown below, click Select to add a computer. Step B4. In the following screen, the white boxes are automatically completed with your user information. Click Process Request to proceed. Step B5. Click OK to confirm the computer name request. Step B6. You should see a message such as Successfully added the computer ssmith3 to the EMEA domain. In this example, ssmith3 is the new computer name. Make note of this computer name. 21

If you do not get a Successfully added the computer message, then retry a second time. If you still get a failure, contact the Help Desk and tell them that you are trying to create a new computer name and ATM is not responding. Step B7. Once you have the new computer name from ATM, return to your new PC, which should still have the Computer Name prompt on the screen. Type the new computer name from ATM, and then return to Step 11 on page 9 to continue the set up process. 22

Appendix C Completing the set up in an offline mode or with a VPN connection If you are not setting up your PC in an HP office, then after you have completed Step 1 through Step 14, you should perform Step C1 through Step C18 below to complete the set up. These steps add your new PC to the HP domain and enable you to log on to your PC with your user name outside of an HP office. If you are in an HP Office, but are completing an offline build, then after you have completed Step 1 through Step 14, you should perform Step C6 through Step C18 below to complete the set up. These steps will add your new PC to the HP domain. Step C1. Ensure your PC is connected to the Internet. You must have a valid Remote Access service subscription. If you have used VPN before, then you already have this subscription. If you are using wireless networking, be sure to check that your wireless connection is turned on and working. Step C2. Click the Remote Access to HP Network icon on your desktop to connect to the HP network. Step C3. The Remote Access to HP window appears. Click on Details to check select the VPN Gateway location that you wish to connect to. 23

Once your VPN Gateway location is correct, click on Connect. Then type your PIN if requested: Step C4. Once you have a sucessful VPN connection, you are prompted for your log on credentials. Enter your domain user name in the format DOMAIN\username (for example, EMEA\smithsa) and your domain password to continue. Step C5. If the HP Network Connection window is still displayed, then click Retry on this window to start joining your PC to the HP domain. Step C6. Double click the Join HP Domain icon that is available on your Windows desktop. Step C7. A window appears similar to the one shown to the right. Read it and then click Continue. Step C8. Type your address and your domain password twice into the next window and then click Continue. A screen then appears indicating that it is gathering information about your account from HP s network. 24

You may see a further window requesting missing information. If you are uncertain about any information you are asked to enter, see Appendix B on page 19 for further instructions. Step C9. Your PC now needs to reboot to apply the settings. Click OK. After your PC restarts, it automatically logs on as the hpadmin user. PC COE may now need to update your computer with the latest patches. Please allow this to run and complete before continuing this process. Your computer may need to reboot, you should allow this to happen. Step C10. The following window appears if you are completeing domain join using a VPN connection. If you are in an HP Office completeing an offline join, skip to the next step. As before, leave this window on the screen and log on to the HP network using the Remote Access to HP Network shortcut on your desktop. After you are connected to the HP network, click Retry on the above window. If you close the window by mistake, you can connect to the HP domain from the Windows Welcome Center (as described in Step C5). Step C11. A window similar to the one shown to the right appears. Read it and then click Continue. Step C12. Your PC now performs some automatic steps and displays a pop-up window indicating that your computer has been joined to the domain. Click OK to reboot your PC. 25

Step C13. After your PC restarts, press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to display the Windows log on page. Just press Enter to log on as user hpadmin (leave the password field blank). Step C14. The following window appears if you are completeing domain join using a VPN connection. If you are in an HP Office completeing an offline join, skip to the next step. As before, leave this window on the screen and log on to the HP network using the Remote Access to HP Network shortcut on your desktop. After you are connected to the HP network, click Retry on the window. If you click Cancel by mistake on this window, you must log off and log back on to redisplay the window. By this stage, the special icons on the desktop and in the Windows Welcome Center have been removed because your PC has already been joined to the domain. Step C15. A window similar to the one shown to the right appears. Read it and then click Continue. Step C16. Your PC now makes some changes to complete this portion of the configuration process. When you see the Domain Join Complete prompt, click OK to log off your PC. You do not need to wait for other windows to close; you can click OK as soon as you see this prompt. 26

Step C17. The log on screen now shows your user name, and you need to log on using your domain password. It may take several minutes to log on because this is the first time you have logged on to this PC using your user name. Once you have logged on to your PC with your own user name, you need to log on to the HP network using the Remote Access to HP Network shortcut on your desktop. Step C18. You can now return to the set up process at Step 16 on page 12. Remember to restart the VPN connection after any future reboots during the remainder of the set up process. 27

Appendix D - Possible problems encountered during the installation Can I start again? If you have a problem during the set up process and you need to restart, use the image DVD for the operating system you are installing and start from Step 3 on page 5. Go to to obtain the latest image DVDs. Locked PC I left my PC running, and now my PC has gone to a locked screen. If you leave your PC for any length of time during the set up process, the screen locks. If hpadmin is shown as the user name, then the password is blank while your PC is being set up; just press Enter. If your user name is shown, then type in your domain password and press Enter to unlock your PC. Address Could Not Be Found If the message Address Could Not Be Found appears, click on Retry and ensure that you enter a valid HP address. Which user name appears depends on where you are in the set up process. If you still get this error, and you are certain that you have entered a valid HP address, then this error could be due to a server or network error. Click on Cancel, this will continue the build in an offline mode. Ensure that you follow the further instructions at Step 15 for the offline build. Local Account Password Check A Local Account Password Check runs when you log on to your PC after setting it up. This check is part of the standard HP log on process and ensures that a password is set for each local account on your PC. After you have set up your new PC, the check sets a password for the hpadmin user that your PC used during the set up. If you see the password check window, make a note of the password displayed, and then close the window. You can find the password later by visiting this ATM web page. 28

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) What if I have an old PC? If the new PC you are setting up is replacing an old PC that you are currently using, see Step 20 on page 14 for more information about how to easily copy your data and settings. Best Practice If you have two PCs, label them as Old and New using a piece of paper taped to each PC. See Step 21 on page 14 for what to do when you have finished with your old PC. How long does the set up process take? The total time varies depending on whether you need to set up additional applications or copy data and settings from your old PC to your new PC. Allow 60 to 90 minutes to complete Step 2 through Step 19. If you plan to copy data and settings from an old PC to your new PC, you should allow approximately an additional hour for each 10 GB of data that is to be copied using the Migrate My Computer application described in Step 20 on page 14. Can I continue to use my old PC during this process? If you are moving from an old PC to your new PC, you can continue to use the old PC until you start copying data and settings (see Step 20 on page 14). However, do not unplug your new PC from the network or power supply during this set up process. If you do not have more than one available network connection at your desk, you may look for an additional network connection at a nearby desk, or use your old PC with a wireless network connection if available, or limit the use of your old PC to activities that can be performed without a network connection. You should periodically check your new PC during the set up process as there are steps where your input is required. The time estimates in this guide indicate approximately how long until your input is required again. Is my PC suitable for this set up process? The process described in this guide sets up the standard Windows XP PC COE configuration on your new PC. The process is designed to work with the IT standard HP desktop, notebook, and tablet PC models. The set up process is regularly updated to ensure support as new standard PC models are introduced. For a complete list of PC models that this process is designed for, go to and click the PC standard hardware link in the Help area. 29

Can I set up my PC outside of an HP office? You can set up your new PC outside of an HP office using a VPN connection if you are subscribed to the Employee Remote Access service and have an ActivKey or ActivCard. Because the VPN set up process is more complex and usually takes longer to complete, we recommend setting up your PC using a VPN connection only if it is not practical for you to get to an HP office. This guide describes the different steps you must perform when setting up your PC using a VPN connection. If you are using an ActivCard smart card with a handheld smart card reader, a remote set up is not available at this time. Please set up your PC at an HP office. My previous PC had a built in smart card reader but my new PC does not have one; what should I do? If you have an ActivKey use the ActivKey instead. Otherwise, check if the old reader is a removable PCMCIA smart card reader. If it is, remove the reader (push the eject button next to it), plug it into the PCMCIA slot of your new PC, and use it with your ActivCard. If the reader is not removable, request a new ActivKey via Solution Source. See for more details. Where can I get more help? For support, double-click the Get IT support icon on your Desktop or in the notification area of your Windows toolbar, and then visit the PC Desktops, Laptops & Hardware section. 30
