1 Installation Instructions Windows XP Recovery for ThinkPads Neptun, November 2007 To Do / Info Screenshot Preliminary Measures If you have already used your laptop: Begin by making a backup of your data. The following recovery procedure will erase all data from the disk. The next steps require the 6 XP Recovery Set CDs: - Lenovo CD Rescue and Recovery (Disc 1 of 1) - ThinkPad CD for product recovery (Disc 1-6 of 6) Note: the three remaining DVDs will not be needed. These discs, labeled 1 through 3, contain the Vista Business Recovery Set. Recovery Processes - Data Transfer and Configuration of Windows XP 1 Connect your laptop to a power source. The following procedure takes 4 to 6 hours depending on the type of machine and requires several reboots. 2 Boot your laptop from the Lenovo CD Rescue and Recovery : Press F12 when booting, insert the CD into the drive and choose the CD/DVD drive as the boot disk (press Enter to confirm). 3 After a few seconds the start-screen of the Lenovo Rescue and Recovery tool will appear. 4 The start-screen shows information about the options of the program. Press Continue 5 To start the recovery process click on Restore your System in the menu to the left.

2 6 A warning will appear, press OK. 7 Now choose the «Restore my Hard drive to the original factory state» and confirm by pressing Next. 8 A warning will appear, press Yes since you are in possession of the volume data by Lenovo. (See Preliminary Measures ) 9 Choose the I do not want to save any files option and press Continue. 10 Another warning will appear stating that all data on the disk will be erased. Press Continue. 11 Press OK on the next warning. 12 Several information screens as well as a license agreement regarding the use of the Recovery Disc set will be displayed, click Continue where applicable and accept the license agreement. 13 Some data will be copied off the Lenovo Rescue and Recovery CD in order to create a temporary boot system off of which the actual installation will be started.

3 14 Once the copy process has completed, remove the CD from the drive and switch off the laptop by pressing the power button: Keep the button pressed for several seconds until the laptop shuts down. After a few seconds you can reboot the laptop by pressing the power button again. 15 After booting the machine will start the recovery process, when you are asked for the «Product Recovery Supplement Disc» click «No». 16 You will now need the CDs for product recovery: Start by inserting disc one, follow-up with disc 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 when you are prompted. Once the copy process for all 6 discs has completed, the laptop will automatically reboot and the actual recovery process will start. 17 Leave disc 5 in the drive until the setup has completed (step 25) and do not interrupt the process. Wait until you are asked to reboot. Note: sometimes the status window is not visible because it is hidden behind the main window. By pressing ALT-Tab you can switch between windows. Choose the status window symbol (white icon with blue frame) from the available options. 18 In order to complete the reconstruction the laptop must be rebooted. Click Yes. If you now refrain from clicking anything else, the laptop will reboot after 10 seconds, if you click Continue it will reboot immediately. Important: Do not click No or Cancel - your laptop would then remain in an unusable state.

4 19 If everything has worked this far, Windows XP should start now. Important: this is not yet the XP setup for the user but rather the setup for adjusting XP to the ThinkPad hardware. 20 Several scripts for configuring your laptop will now run, you don't need to do anything; as long as Please wait, Preload Customizations in progress... is visible everything is running smoothly even if it appears that nothing is happening. The laptop will reboot several times during the setup. 21 Depending on the model a message may appear warning that the current user doesn't have a password. Click Yes to set the administrator password. In the following window you can set your password. If desired, you can also activate and program the fingerprint scanner by simply following the on-screen instructions. 22 Once this setup process has completed the computer will reboot into the actual XP setup. Follow the instructions on your screen until your laptop is configured and the required user accounts have been created.

5 IMPORTANT: your ThinkPad now runs Windows XP, however several additional steps are required to bring the computer up to date. 23 Configure your computer for Internet access then proceed as follows: 24 Start the Think Vantage Productivity Center (Link on your Desktop), to update all Lenovo drivers. (From the menu choose: System Update). Follow the instructions on-screen in order to install important updates for your laptop. Repeat this step until no more updates are available. 25 Once all drivers and updates have been installed, go to Windows Update and install everything until no further updates are available (you may need to start Windows Update several times) Your laptop is now ready for use.
