3 Historical Museum The Historical Museum presents the history and cultural heritage of the Häme region and Hämeenlinna residents. The museum is housed in a former prison building that was completed in 1844, right next door to the medieval Häme Castle. Temporary exhibitions ending on 31 May include Package of History ( Paketoitu aika ), which celebrates the museum s 100th anniversary, and Window ( Ikkuna ), about the history of windows and their repair. On 1 June 2013, the exhibition operations of the Historical Museum will be moved to Häme Castle. Exhibitions to be held in the castle include Collectors Journeys to Other Worlds ( Keräilijät kohti toisia maailmoja ), in May, and a photo exhibition compiled from the Historical Museum s collections in September. Guided tours and school visits can be arranged by prior agreement. In addition, there is a museum shop, and we offer space for hire, where we can also organise catering by request. We offer many types of workshops, lectures, and events each year. 4 Expert services and office is also the Provincial Museum of Tavastia Proper. We offer our customers and local museums assistance and advice with museum-related matters. Our photo archive contains more than 150,000 photographs, film slides, and negatives. Although our exhibition activities will be moved to Häme Castle on 1 June 2013, our expert services and the museum office will remain at the old address at Kustaa III:n katu 8. The office is open Monday to Friday, 9am 3pm. Savings Bank Museum The Savings Bank Museum shares premises with the Historical Museum in Linnanniemi. Its exhibition is based on the stunning collection of the Research Foundation of Finnish Savings Banks, allowing visitors to experience the atmosphere of a 1920s bank. 5 Prison Museum The Prison Museum tells the story of prison life and the history of Finnish prison administration. The museum is housed in the old Hämeenlinna County Prison, whose operations were transferred to another location in The majority of the old prison building has been left untouched, though the museum also displays interesting items and exhibitions, along with cells that have been decorated appropriately for various eras. We offer guided tours, space for hire, and education packages for schools by prior arrangement. Guided tours in June August on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2pm Prison Rat Vallu goes on adventures at the museum over the winter holidays and during children s art festival Hippalot. 6 Palander House Palander House is a home museum displaying a Hämeenlinna bourgeois home. The house s richly decorated rooms offer an opportunity to get a sense of urban living 100 years ago. The museum holds a variety of room ensembles, ranging from the elegant drawing room to the servants kitchen. Exhibits include period dresses and stories about the members of the bourgeoisie who lived in the house. The inner courtyard holds a traditional garden. Tickets include a guided tour. These are held every 30 minutes, with the last tour of the day starting at 3:30pm. At Christmas and Easter, the house is decked with period decorations. 7 Birthplace of Jean Sibelius Finland s national composer, Jean Sibelius ( ) was born in Hämeenlinna. The rooms of the house where he was born, decorated in 1860s style, tell the story of Little Janne s childhood and teen years in Hämeenlinna. The cosy museum is right in the city centre. The hall of Sibelius birthplace also serves as a venue for chamber concerts and music sessions that can be requested in advance. Visitors to the museum can listen to recordings of the music of Sibelius and watch video artist Marikki Hakola s musical film Luonnotar ( Daughter of Nature ). Summer matinees at the Birthplace of Jean Sibelius are held on Sundays in June August at 2pm. Guided tours are offered all year on Sundays at 2pm; on summer matinee days, the tours are held after the concert, at approximately 2:45pm.
